Worried about large ovarian cyst, possible cancer and operation

Hi Everyone

I am 60 and was diagnosed with a large ovarian cyst on Tuesday after a routine scan on my gallbladder.  The cyst is 8.7cm x 5.5cm approx 31/2 inches by 21/2 inches)  I had a CA125 blood test on Thursday afternoon because, although most of the cyst looks to be fluid, there is a solid part to it too (but don't know the result yet).  I am really worried about what is going to happen to me, whether it is cancer or not, but also how the operation will be done with such a big cyst.  Could they still do this with keyhole or will it need to be the bigger operation?

My doctor has referred me to the consultant as urgent to be seen within two weeks, but she is now on holiday until Tuesday so I cannot talk to her..

Has anyone else been in a similar situation (especially at my age)?  How did they do the operation and what did they remove, just the cyst, the ovaries as well, or more?  How long did it take to get over it?

I would be very grateful for any information anyone can give me please?

Best wishes

Kathy

    Hi everyone.

Does anyone know how long it takes to get the biopsy results back please? I was told two weeks, and I rang the hospital yesterday and today (two weeks), and they said someone who was medically trained would have to ring me back.  So far no-one has!  However, they did mention that I have an appointment on 8 December at the hospital (nice of them to let me know).

I know some of you have been in this position before and I wonder how long you actually had to wait for the results.  It's just so worrying not knowing.  The same doctor came to see me after surgery that i had seen before.  I had just had morphine, and with the best will in the world, hadn't got a clue what he said.  I read on my discharge notes that I had endometriosis and some of this had been removed, along with the cyst the size of a grapefruit. They didn't find any signs of anything anywhere else, but I need to know about the cyst.   He said something about there had been some changes but I don't know what he meant, and he was gone in a flash.  It's just so worrrying not knowing if I have to go back in for another op or not.

I am healing OK, apart from one incision which I am having to get packed and dressed each day, but otherwise am feeling well.  But part of me thinks this could all be in vain if I have to go back into hospital again soon.

Can anyone offer any shred of comfort in this awful situation?

Mine was supposed to be 10 days but was 17 and I do know it can vary hugely from hospital to hospital.

I had ovaries, tubes and cysts removed. Recovery times depend on the Dr you speak too. My consultant said 1-2 weeks, another 3-4, a third 4-6 and my GP said 4-6 but knows of someone who took 12 but like me she had pre-existing problems. Unfortunatley recovery times are a bit like how long is a piece of string as everyone is different. Please rest assured though that you sound well on the way

Changes can mean since the scan and nothing more ie that it got bigger or changed shape, neither of these are to be worried about and are unlikely to indicate the need for further surgery.

Any pathology results available will have been sent to or be available to your GP so you could ring them. It is a good sign they have not rung you.

Thanks Taz.  You always make me feel more positive!

I have rung my doctor but they say they don't usually get the results sent through to them (I have to say that my doctor has tried really hard to get information out of the hospital but they seem reluctant to respond).  Thank you for explaining things to me.  At least I feel more hopeful now.

By the way, are you feeling any better now?  Have you had any response to your letter about the way you have been treated?

Got a reply yesterday to say looking at it, doubt anything else for a bit.

My GP has access to the trust database, as do all the GP's in this area, so able to look it up.

In your case it is good your GP has not got results as speaks of nothing overly sinister seen.

Ah that's interesting Taz.  MY GP had access to my discharge notes, so maybe she will get access to the test results.  The Oxford hospitals are in a Trust, so I assume my doctor is part of that?

Thank you so much for your positive comments again.  It really does help me.

I hope things go well with your complaint.  When I am feeling stronger I intend to write a letter also.

Are you feeling any better now?

      Big hugs back xxxx

Yup thanks, getting on slow but sure.

You have a year to send a complaint, see from your first post that is 10 months now if that is when your complaint originates from. Plenty of time, so give yourself all the time you need and don't feel hurried.

      Hi Taz

I've just rung my doctors again this morning and they still have no results. Should I ring the hospital again or wait until my appointment on Monday do you think?

If I were you I would wait till Monday as that could be the timescale to which pathology is working ie not see as needed till then so won't do till then.

A lot though also depends on how much extra stress/worry would be caused if they did not have them when you rang or hospital policy meant they will only give them in clinic so end up with yes got them but no can't have them until seen.

      Big hugs

Thanks Julie.  Yes, that is helpful.  I'm guessing that's what the appointment on the 8 December is for.  Was everything OK when you got your results?
