Worried about neck pain

Hi all,

I have fibromyalgia/cfs with really bad health anxiety. My worst problem is the tiredness, I feel that I am asleep more than I am awake, and I have really bad one sided neck pain as well as all my other symptoms. Because of my health anxiety it makes me panick thinking that Ive got something seriously wrong like a tumor. The pain is usually ore on the left side, does anyone else have really bad neck pain or know how to ease this? (ive tried the usual heat etc)

Thanks, Holly

How long have you been diagnosed with fibro/CFS? Do you have headache?

I was diagnosed at Christmas but been having symptoms for a year now, sometimes I get headaches

Interesting, I thought headache was a primary symptoms of CFS, but as you are diagnosed with it, while having intermittent headaches, it makes me wonder.

The vagus nerve disturbance hypothesis causing CFS seems to be really true.

How old are you? Do you still have your wisdom teeth? They're all okay? Do you ever had injury on the back or neck?

I am 21 and have all my wisdom teeth which don't hurt or anything ad no neck injuries

Hi Mary, recent hypothesis shows that CFS is neurological issue in origin, and pinpointing it to issues with vagus nerve (cranial nerve x). Causes varies among viral infection, brain tumor, even hiatal hernia. So it suggests that the cause may be infection, inflammation, or even pinching/pressure.

You may not believe that I've cured my 4 months of CFS with extraction of my upper wisdom tooth. It was a long story and I didn't even know all my symptoms are CFS, up until extraction. I was very curious why the extraction immediately cured my primary symptoms of fatigue and long/disturbed sleep. The secondary symptoms took longer to subside though. I even had digestion issue in which lab test shows fungal spore.

I do not believe real chronic are caused by infection though, my guess is pinched nerve. I really wanted to suggest thai massage, but of course, I am only hypothesizing.

Interesting. I have gum disease, for which I have had deep cleaning  treatment in the past and at the moment I have a lot of pain from a deep pocket. The nerve is exposed so anything hot, cold or sweet is excruciating and the pain travels around my face and neck when it's really bad. My lymph glands are enlarged and painful though my dentist says this is nothing to do with the gum issue.  I'm not so sure though. Blood tests have ruled out anything else and my dentist doesn't want to remove the tooth as its a perfectly good tooth but unfortunately  I think that will be the only thing which will stop the pain.

Sorry to hear that Mary, I know how that sensitivity pain feels. When the hot, cold stimuli was gone, does the pain ends immediately or does it stays awhile for 5-10 seconds or more?

Is it your wisdom tooth or any other else?

What was the cause for the gum disease? Cavities?

Sorry to hear that Mary.  I went through the very same thing a while back and thanks to a very good and sensitive dentist, managed to completely sort things out after a period of time. I too had enlarged lymph glands at the time in my neck and I put that down to the normal hyper immune response we get at times.

The only unfortunate thing at the time was some antibiotics they gave me set up some heart arrhythmias and I was rushed into hospital... Life eh ? cheesygrin..

Still I think it's important to sort out as many other health issues we may have so that it lightens the load on the ME/CFS so I wish you luck and I'm sure you'll get there eventually.

No it's an upper molar that's got the large pocket. Don't know what caused it really. I'd had bleeding gums for years but didn't realise it was a sign of gum disease. All I can do now is maintain a good cleaning regime and seeing the dentist every three months but unfortunately it's too late for this one area that's giving me problems. The pain this morning was awful, just after eating a banana! It went all round my face and neck (the pain not the banana!) for at least a hour.

Hi Mary, prolonged pain from a perfectly healthy tooth doesn't sound right to me, an hour is just too long for sensivity. Also, isn't dentist supposed to put filling in the gums for severe cases? Did the dentist expect the gum to regrow and heal without nothing then?

My stomach just felt better since the past 2 days. I am supposed to be recovering, but this digestion issue seems to take forever to recover.

I've had it a while and sometimes it's more sensitive than others. I could apparently have surgery to sew up the gum if I have plenty of money to spare! Otherwise there is nothing I can do apart from put up with the pain. I'm sorry about your stomach; I've had weeks of a poor tummy. I try to keep off gluten but most food seems to upset me at the moment!

It made me thinking, if you were a guy you'd probably go the fastest route -- extraction, heh. I'm 34 and already lost a 1st premolar, and you know how the hole literally stands up when you say cheese. I didn't cared, as long as I'm not in pain smile

Try simple foods that can be breaken down easily for a while, see if papaya juice can help you, they're rich in digestive enzymes!

I think I will probably have it extracted eventually but it's a perfectly good tooth, that's the frustrating thing! It's the gum that's the problem! Thanks for the tip of papaya juice. I'll give that a go. Sometimes I juice fruit and veg but even that upsets my tummy! 😳

    HI Holly,

I too am experiencing severe neck pain on the left side of my neck. I am going to go to the chiropractor on Monday. It does help alleviate the pain and helps also with the muscle aches and fatigue that I have to deal with also. this is not fun stuff to deal with. I also worry that I have something else wrong with me but with all the tests and bloodwork coming back and nothing has shown up I guess it's just the CFS and all that goes with it. Good luck and I hope you find some relief too.
