Worried it's back elsewhere......

I have shingles across my stomach going on 4 weeks now with severe back pain which is almost intolerable.  I am very worried

that it's somehow gotten into my eye on the same side.  It's been watering constantly for the last couple days and now I feel like there's a bump in the corner of my eye.  Is this possible?  The shingles have finally started to clear up with scabs but unfortunately the back pain is still pretty severe.  I am now worried about what's going on with my eye and wonder if it's somehow gotten in there????

You may have an eye infection that is seperate from your shingles. Shingles stay on the same dermatone and even if you get a repeated episode it will happen in the same location as your first. You should get eye checked if its not showing improvement in a day or so or if it continues to worsen. Hope you feel better soon.

I currently have Shingles and have it in my left eye. My Dr referred me to an Ophthalmologist, who prescribed antiviral drops (Zirgan) and Prednisolone for pain and swelling.

I started with dry eyes at first but thought it was the change in climate while being in the dry MidWest. Hope you get better.

I have sores on my eyelid, between my nose and left eye, on my scalp, in my nostril and in my left ear.. After 3 weeks of this, now it's just the tingling where the sores are. I don't know how much longer that will last or if it will linger for months.

    Hi Sweets,

    I doubt this is shingles.

    1. Shingles doesn't self inoculate the patient.

    2. It has scabbed up.

    3. You reached the 4 week mark. It is no longer infectious. Is the eye itchy and red? I would see an ophthalmologist immediately, as anything to do with one's eyes is serious. I would flush your eye with cold water after washing your hands to see if that helps. Can you see the bump, or feel the bump? If you actually see the bump, what does it look like and is it on the white part of the eye? You also can have a foreign body, eg eye lash, debris, that can feel like a bump. In any case, as this has lasted two days, see an ophthalmologist immediately.

    Best Wishes

      Great!

Let me know what happens. The fact that it is one eye that is affected concerns me. I am a nurse practitioner in the States and have had Herpes Zoster in my right ear and my right eye.

You should have pain medication for your Herpes Zoster-Shingles in your abdomen-back area. Aren't you on anything? First, you shouldn't be suffering. Second, I am concerned that you will have post herpetic neuralgia or PHN. How old are you?

I'm 61 and didn't get a shot.  I worry about the same thing.  I'm on a pain pill to be taken in the morning and evening however I will say that it doesn't help with the pain at all.  I also take 800 mg of ibuprofen about every 6 hours.  I can't tell you the name at the moment because I'm at work and the pills are at home.

      Hello again Merry,

Can i just ask you, when you had shingles in your eye how long did the itching carry on for? it is over 3 months ago  now that i was diagnosed and I have such terrible itching at times in my right eye!! I still have another appointment at the eye clinic as until recently I had dry eye which was really sore and red, I am pleased to say that has gone now but the itching drives me crazy!! I am on  steroid eye drops, and Clinitas plus Carmize which have no preservatives and i can use them anytime,

      Jane,

Although I had Herpes Zoster-Shingles in my right ear twice, I had severe boring electric pain. I also had it in my right ear at the same time as the nerve roots are close together. I never suffered from itching in my right eye the way you have after shingles. I therefore cannot give any time frame or advice. I certainly have suffered from itching due to severe allergies and already gave you all my suggestions that I can think of. Uncontrollable itching is certainly one of the worst sensations to deal with.

      All my best.

      Dear Jane,

That prior message should have read, "in my right eye twice...."

From what my fr. Told me the only way to get vaccine is if you fall into age catagory which I believe is 65. Or if you suffer recurring shingles like I do. But you have to wait until you go 6 months without an outbreak. In my case i have had them 8 times since august 2p15 so they wont give it to me. Also it depends on insurance company wether they will approve getting it earlier than 65. You should adk uour dr. About pain management. Good luck
