Primary care
Seasonal vaccinations provider programme guide for autumn/winter 26/27
The seasonal vaccinations programme provider guide for autumn/winter 26/27 is now available on FutureNHS. This guide consolidates essential operational information for delivering the adult flu, COVID-19, and children’s flu programmes. Providers are advised to review the guide and stay updated, as revisions will be published throughout the season.
Updated flu vaccination service specifications for specific populations
In line with the recent announcement, service specifications have been updated to incorporate individuals experiencing homelessness (aged 16 and above) into the national flu vaccination programme, effective from 1 October 2026. Relevant specifications include:
Updated GP seasonal vaccination enhanced service (ES) specification for adults
Updated GP children’s flu ES specification for 16 and 17-year-olds
Updated community pharmacy advanced service specification for 16 and 17-year-olds
Infection prevention and control requirements
The National infection prevention and control manual (NIPCM) must be followed in NHS settings. Key responsibilities include:
Ensuring adequate supplies of personal protective equipment (PPE) and training for staff in its use.
Primary care providers now must procure their own PPE and FIT testing to ensure a safe working environment.
Integrated Care Boards (ICBs) are tasked with FIT testing assurance, collaborating with local stakeholders as needed.
Useful resources include:
Consultation on single and multi-neighbourhood provider contracts
A consultation is currently open until 10 September 2026, inviting feedback on two new contracts aimed at streamlining the commissioning of neighbourhood health services. NHS England seeks input from various stakeholders, including general practice teams and patient representatives.
Community pharmacy
Preparing for prescribing in national community pharmacy services
As part of the Community Pharmacy Contractual Framework for 2026/27, independent prescribing will be introduced in NHS community pharmacy services beginning autumn 2026. A letter outlining funding for integrated care boards (ICBs) is available, detailing their expected roles. Furthermore, NHS England has developed commissioning guidance for prescribing-based services and a professional assurance framework to facilitate the implementation.
NHS hypertension case finding service updates
The NHS hypertension case finding service has been revised to clarify patient access, referral eligibility, and guidance on operational procedures. The updated service specification will take effect on 3 September 2026, with the current one remaining valid until then. The new details are available on the NHS England website and the existing specification can be found on the NHSBSA website.
General practice
Engaging GPs and practice managers on health data policy
The Department of Health and Social Care is conducting a national engagement programme to gather insights from GPs and practice managers regarding the use of patient data. This initiative aims to shape future policies affecting patient data utilisation. Flexible participation options are offered, accommodating busy schedules.

Quality improvement programme resources

This year’s focus aligns with NICE guidelines on dental recall intervals. Additional communication materials are available to assist dental teams in explaining recall intervals to patients.
