'undiagnosable' abdominal pain.

Hi there,

I've had right severe abdominal pain, just below my rib line, It's a constant pain and i've experienced it for about 4 months now. At first I didn't really pay attention to it, it then became too painful to ignore at all. I would find myself waking up at night, or having to sit/lay down at work clutching my side. One day at work it became so painful I collapsed, and began having heart palpitations, after calling an ambulance I was sat inside it for 30 minutes or so hooked up to an ecg, my heart beat averaged about 125. I've seen about 10 doctors, 4 of my local GP's, and had 3 trips to AnE. The palpitations proceeded the severe pain a total of 3 times so far, It'd feel as if something in my right side had almost burst and spread across my body becoming numb and having severe chest pain - and I honestly thought I was having a heart attack because of the pain and the feeling of my heart pumping through my chest.

I guess the best thing will be to answer every question they've asked me..

I'm a healthy 19 year old male, I've eaten healthy, exercised often, i'm 10 stone 8, and i'm 5ft 8. I am not a drug user, although I am partial to the occasional binge drink (Like most teenagers).

I do not lift heavy objects, I work in a bar and don't lift any barrels/trays of glasses. I have been a smoker for a year now, and have been cutting down since the pain started, although giving it up entirely is quite hard as i'm finding it the only thing that has relaxed me. I've had no blood in my urine/feces/vomit. I have only vomited once during the 4 months. I do not have a temperature, I do not have a fever, the pain is not increased when pressure is applied. It is not relieved by warm/cold packs etc. The doctors are adamant I do not have appendicitis, i've had 3 ultrasounds which show no stones in my kidneys or galbladder and everything is as of normal size.

When I was admitted into AnE and asked to spend 2 more nights in the hospital I became so bad I had to have someone to hold me up while I walk, I couldn't sit up due to the pain and I would be so tired that I couldn't get out of bed. They had asked me to stay because of one blood test that showed my liver functions spiking high (I think it was billirubin? - and no I had not had a heavy night of drinking or anything the night before It was taken) They released me because they said being an outpatient would be faster (Which, it isn't, as the specialist i've been referred to will not be able to see me until december, when it's september now.)

Through all the doctors i've seen, i've stuck with one who has been incredibley helpful throughout this all, although completely clueless to what is going on with me.

Whilst in the hospital I've had a doctor tell nurses to stop giving me any pain killers because Im probably just a drug addict, and other doctors tell me it's complete anxiety, and others take one look at me and say it's a mucle inflammation under my rib.

It's got to the point where I can't work, my relationships are suffering incredibly because I can hardly do anything. I Can't drink without having incredibly bad hang overs which last for days or throwing up after the first couple of pints, some days I will wake up and sit on the floor because it's too painful to lie down or stand up. My relationship with my partner is suffering, as it is most of the time too painful to be intimate. This is ruining my life, and all the doctors are telling me 'come back if it gets worse, but there's nothing wrong with you'.

But as I said, 3 ultra sounds, 2 x-rays, 15 blood tests (Including one for hepatitus).

And nothing except one liver function spike, the once. My blood sugars are normal, there's nothing abnormal in my urine.

What i've told every doctor i've seen;

I've had severe right abdominal pain. Just below my rib. So severe I can not walk etc. I've had constipation for 4 months a long with the pain, which every now and then seems to just disappear. It seems to become more severe every other week, and on 3 occasions so painful I have collapsed and either thought I was having a heart attack or my appendix had burst due to the pain.

Please, any help is incredibly appreciated, I just want my life back!

Thank you, Alex.

Hi All....I too have undiagnosed stomach pain. Mostly pain under the lower rib, on both sides, but mostly Right. And its also stomach pain, lower right, near my belly button. It started around Feb. 2012. So its been going on for awhile now. I have had 3 endoscpics, 2 colonoscopies and 4 Cat Scans. Also have tons of blood work done.

Few results from them, but so far I've been diagonsed with Costochondritis  in 2013, and Diverticulitis in 2014. No meds for the Costochondritis, and only a round of Flaygl for the other.

I have had many, many stomach operations, including a total hysterctomy (long incision along my lower belly), Emergency Ovarian Cyst removal (long scar perpidicular over belly), several laproscopic surgeries, and Gallbladder Removal surgery.

I have also had 3 bowel blockages during this time. The last ending with an NG tube, and in the hospital for 5 days.

I have been told that I also have a hiatel hernia, and a belly button hernia. But doc has ruled out Crohn's disease, Celiac disease, and IBS. I see my internist and myGastroenterologist for these pains.  I am not allowed to take any ibuprofen anymore, because I had to take so much of it in my 30's and 40's because of Endometriosis and Adenomyosis pain before I had my hystrectomy. And I also can't take pain killers, because it can acerbate my bowel blockages.

Not sure where to go from here. I am 51 yrs old and in constant pain.

Hope you have found relief from the pain.

    Hi Alex,

Was wondering how you got on with the pain/hospital. I have just come across this after googling my symptons which are very similar to yours. I noticed that I only get this pain when I am constipated like you have had ultrasounds and x-rays, and the only thing they have come up with is my liver. The pain has been getting worse the longer I am constipated, I did have a good Doctor who listened to me and she gave me Movicol and suppositors to help clear the backlog, but she left and no one else seems to listen to me, I get told there is nothing wrong and I am just imagining it :-(

It has been 5 years now that i have had pain and discomfort in my lower right side. 2 inches over 2 inches down from belly button. I have been given no answer after years of tests, switching doctors, and hospitals. Doctors keep pushing antidepressants and pain meds. I refuse to mask my pain and forget about the problem. I am depressed because of so much pain with so little explanation.  I smoke pot to help appetite and pain i can't drink anymore because it hurts and makes me sick after 2 beers. Constantly in pain urinating and never regular bowel movements. Relationships turn bad because I'm not able to be active like a 27 year old should be. And I have lost jobs because I'm constantly sick. I vomit just about every day mainly in the morning after waking up or after many meals.

I have been back and forth thinking it was a hernia. But I was told no signs of a hernia are present in x rays and ultrasounds.

I've almost given up trying. Please someone anymore help us all be able to live a happy healthy normal life with out this

I am in a similar hell. I had an ultrasound and gallbladder is inflamed and 13cm vs 10-11cm normally. can't sit up and dealing with nausea and vomiting. I also have ic which causes me to feel as though I am in constant labor. Doc has me on opiates and hospital docs say that's the problem. I am working on lower the dosage but after spending a day and a half in the hospital I came home. Pain is severe but instead of trying to figure out other posdibilities they remain focused on the opiates. I fel like I am stuck in a cycle and can't even sit up. right now, I sm sitting here waiting for stomach biopsy report. I know something is wrong beyond what they are guessing at. I've changed my diet and nothing is working. I'm female 47 and overweight though I am down from size 26 to a 16-18. I plan to wean off the opiates but I know that opens me to a lifetime of severe pain. I just don't know what it isnand there's no reason they say for the pain. It's right under my right rib but since the endoscopy of the stomsch it's now like I sm wearing a tire made of pain arounf my abdomen. I spend far too much time crying from the pain.

Hi all. I was going through the exact same pain for 8 years and no health professionals would take me serious. I was at my wits end and no longer wanted to continue with the horrendous life of existence I was going through daily . Well November 2013 I was again admitted to hospital for the same pain and the million time in the prior years and when consultant came round to speak to me he told me it was all in my head . Yeh il give him that I had been through a lot. My son was born December 2005 and six weeks later my sister died aged 32 years of a diabetic coma in front of us on the same day as my other sisters birthday 10th February 2006 and in Nov/Dec2008 my dad was killed in a hit and run. Bearing in mind this pain started a week after having my son . So as much as he was saying it was my body's way of copeing with the bereavement I knew it wasn't as it started before the first death . So he got me a psychiatrist and pulledthe curtains round me like a mental patient . So was sent home a day later again still in pain only it was getting worse and a week after being released I got up in the morning to dress my son for school when feeling sick which was the norm for me a spewed blood all over living room . I was rushed to hospital and was being rleased a few days later still no answers. So the night before release I just kissed my child and partner goodbye who asked the doctor if I was going to be ok and he reassured them I was abso fine. When ten mins after visiting I felt sick again and spewed six sick bowls of blood and crashed when resuscitated I was being rushed to theatre when opened up my stomach the surgeon was abso gob smacked he had never seen any ones insides this bad in all his carer . I had a massive hole in stomach from constantly being sick and acid and my bowels and stomach had seperated also an ulcer behind my small bowel that had perforated . All those years I had problems moving my bowels couldn't keep even water down at best of times and stomach cramps like Ud never believe. I knew my own pain was real and no one would listen I spent all that November December January and February between high dependency and a normal ward I'm now on feeding tube as I had malnutrition and had to have a line put in my neck to get a little nutrition in to me bit by bit. I had blood transfusions and loads of other medical appliances surrounding my body as it was so bad and left so long. So when I went for a mri during my hospital stay I had a quick read at my notes and found a slip that said I was a little crazy in the head and just liked the pain relief meds and anti sickness injections. So if anyone atal can be spared this trauma please please please be persistent and make sure u are fully pushing the docs to do all they can and not fob you off. I nearly lost my life my son nearly lost a mum Al due to neglect from docs for so long. Please also have a read up on gastroparesis it may be an eye opener for many of u sufferers. Please keep me updated on your progress and best wishes michelle

Gallbladder and biliary related I'd say.

A food diary could help...there may be something linked to fatty foods.....

Get the ambulance paramedics out and off to A&E when you're in pain/passing out/having chest pain.....mine travelled from the rib and into the chest. I spent a week in High dependency before I had the ultrasound that identified gall stones.....Keep doing it and they will find something.

Sounds like you might have gall stones one might be in the biliary tube which might be difficult to identify....endoscopy?  Go back to your doctors and tell them you keep waking up in the night in pain, the affects it's having on your life and that you need painkillers and that you'd like to be referred for more diagnosis. DO NOT LEAVE the doctors room until you get what you want.  Get a second opinion.  Also, when you become ill again, phone for an ambulance!

Hi Alex and the rest of the guys on here,

I too have previously suffered with similar ailments and ended up having all the scans and x-rays to no avail, after my 4th emergency hospital admission, they decided to do a HIDA scan which looks at the gall bladder to work out if it is functioning correctly. My gall bladder was working at only 10% of what is should have been, so they decided to remove it. The specialist told me the gall bladder had been inflammed and this had stopped it working correctly. This is bearing in mind that my blood results and tempertaure had come back normal.

Just keep on pushing for the correct treatment, if you are ill, they have to treat you. Go to a different hospital, they may find something that others have not detected.

Good luck and I hope you are getting the treatment you need.

I feel for you bud. I am a 38 year old female and on my birthday this year, I ended up in the ER with gastroenteritis. Severe middle upper abdominal pain continued for months. I have had a history of vomiting. ..bad genes (inherited from my father) but never pain until my last bday. Since then I've been diagnosed with gastroparesis, colitis and GERD. I was told tonight by the oh so sensitive ER doc that I have been in the ER 18 times!!! My response was this....

"18 times huh? And still you have NO FREAKING CLUE what's causing me so much pain? "

Long story short. ...recently I have had 2 vomiting episodes where it looked like I puked dirt. I took pictures because I'd never see vomit look like that and trust me...I have see plenty of vomit. Additionally, my stool looked white. The doc said that vomiting black substance like that is a sign of a GI bleed. He asked if there was blood in my stool and I said no. In the past I have had blood in my stool and it was always visible. He said to be safe he had to put his finger where the sun don't shine. To my surprise, he said there was blood on his glove and I was admitted. ....for exactly what ..I don't know. All I knew was I had a GI bleed which sounded pretty scary to me. They hooked me up to iv for fluids nausea medication and pain meds ...which didn't help much. The dose was 0.5mg of dilaudid. Reglan seemed to work better because it relieved the cramping. So here I lay with no clue what in my GI is bleeding, what can be done to stop it and when it will all stop.

All I can say is hang in there. Your not alone. I'll keep u in my prayers.

It could be a twisted bowel or you could have a blockage . So the pain you are getting is because it's taking a while for food to pass through the blockage . .

I would possibly have very high in fibre foods , salads or some sort of shaKes to see how that goes . You need to rule out things .

    Good luck x

hello, went through all the tests, GI doctor, my general doctor, all came back clean. Talked to my chiropractor and he suggested that I am not producing enough stomach acid. He suggested trying HCL pills with pepsin or apple cider vinegar diluted (2 tbs in 6oz of water).

I have been using it for a couple days now with promising results. I have avoided foods that would reduce the acidity of my stomach such as milk or milk like products. I've also avoided eggs as it has produced bad belching and stomach bloat.

What has worked well for me is using either the pill or diluted vinegar before a meal and after a meal to hit the food from both sides. Doing so has reduced the pain of eating by half. My stomach still hurts but it might be residual pain from being in bad shape for so long. Hope this helps at least one person on here get back to semi normal.
