10 Weeks post HoLEPmat NHS Newcastle UK

This will probably be my last post here, for a while, after a very successful operation. I've posted before at 2, 4 and 8 weeks about my progress and thought I would finish off my last report now that I am relieved of all my pre op symptons. I did say at the 4 to 8 weeks I had urgency which meant I had only about 10 secs to get to a loo and I was caught out a few times which having  had a ruptured achilles at about 5 weeks didnt help my speed at getting to a toilet. I've read about the urgency so although a bit peturbing I knew it was tempory so soldiered on and during the last two weeks it has completely gone. I can sit here watching tv with an urge and delay it for another 15 minutes, no problem.

With this op,,  I had no pain at any point, no clots but a bit pink for 10 days, no pills anymore, can pee 300 mlitres in 10 seconds compared to 100 mlitre in a min before.

No retention at night  and so can sleep through til 7am. Much to my amazement I am ejeculating, not much as I suppose 70% of the prostate is missing now, BUT, the orgasm I'm having is like the real thing which I've not had for some 13 years because of the pills drying me up.

I knew I had a big chance of BE so guess I am lucky and more importantly had a good consultant with modern kit.

Not having to get up all night is the thing I like most about this op and not having to take the two pills is good too. I have been reading that Dutasteride may be causing non alcoholic fatty liver. having said that the pills buy one time whilst deciding what to do , but I wished I had had this op sooner.

In the scheme of things it's ealry doors but am as confident as one can be that the results will be long lasting.

Glad to hear you had success breeze6. I hope we never hear from you again. ( I mean that in the best possible way) Though an occasional update would be nice

Congrats!  I'm five weeks removed and am still wearing Depends, but have had much success in making it through the night.  No sense of urgency, but constant dripping during the daytime.  Changing the depends about 4 times per day.  Does that sound about right to you?  Can't wait to wear my own undies again! Good luck to you.

I hope all get better for you.  But I was reading a article on the Holep procedure .  Sometimes it can last 3 month's to a year.  How much of your prostate did he remove.  You do know that the prostate was the plug for your urine.  I hope things get better soon  Good luck  Ken

But you are seeing improvements and no pain.

Are you able to do any type of  exercise, lift groceries?

I don't know how much was removed.  I don know that my prostate had been measured at 200 grams.  The urologist said it was the largest they had seen.  The only pain I experience is when I sit down on a hard surface.  I'm pretty much back to normal, lifting groceries, etc. Just looking forward to "dry time".

Doing fine, otherwise.  Getting around well.  I tell friends that "I can't walk and chew gum at the same time, but I can walk and pee at the same time with no trouble".  I keep extra pads and pants in my car just in case.

He should have told you how much he removed.  But just ask him when you see him next time.  Good luck  Ken

Many Holep reports on here indicated massive amounts of tissue being removed making me wonder how it functioned at all after it.

In peer reviewed journals (Pub Med), Holep  is considered to have re-ops in only 1% of patient’s, superior to Turp and Button Turp and Green Light.  More  hospitals are using Holep.

Do you think so ? Google still shows that more TURPs are still being performed.

What I meant was Holep is currently utilized by approximately 10 medical centers including additional urologists in private practices.

The use of Holep is increasing among urologists in the states and UK.

Derek that is true but I think it is who write the review on it.  I know I read a article before from the mayo clinic that there was a 30 % down slide on a regular Turp.  They are doing more Button Turp and Holep because there are less bleeding.  Also my urologist and his partner do very few.  I think he told me last year they only did 3.  Because they feel it is a last resort with all the other options out there.  I am happy there are option now not like years ago men had no choice it was Turp take it or leave it.  Have a great day  Ken

The problem with urology is teaching old dogs new tricks.

I prefer a urologist who specialises in one procedure. I don't think that flitting from one to another is a good thing,

I 100% agree.  Jack of all trades, master of none.

During my journey in deciding which procedure and doctor, there were a couple of urologists who said they do every procedure.

Conversely, there were urologist that specialize in one or two.

I’d prefer to go with a specialist.

      Phil,

I hope your op goes well on wed/thursday and be prepared for your pre op warnings of what could go wrong, it nearly frightened me away.
