6 week check up and all is well

Posted , 16 users are following.

Just got home from the hospital after my check up.  Was sent for Xrays first, one lying flat and one with knee bent and turned outwards. Replacement is right where it should be.  Consultant said I was walking well and tried to take away my crutch, but I said I needed it to poke people in the supermarket who came too near with their trolleys.  The 'infection' is a mystery.  Consultant poked and prodded me and said there is no infection there now.  He asked me what made me think I had an infection and I described the pain, the redness and that it felt hot and he just said "Hmmmm", difficult to say without seeing it at the time".  Told me yto finish off the course of antibiotics anyway.  He think the lump/fluid is a haematoma and should disperse.  I forget when he said he wanted to see me again - it was either 3 months ot 6 months.

Happy me cheesygrin

That's fab news Cels. It makes such a difference when you can drive. 7 weeks on Weds & I'll be joining the hippie club! I'm beginning to start thinking about it a bit more now & I even popped into the hospital on my way home today as I hadn't heard anything from them. I would really like to get organised (way before) with any aids I might need as I'll be on holiday the week before my OP. The hospital said they'd get me in for my pre-op assessment probably mid May & the Physio may attend so I can ask questions?? I was under the impression that there would be a few of us that attend a small group discussion on what to do/not to do post op. I'm probably being impatient!

Absolutely Fernlady, I fell like I've been given my independence back.

That 7 weeks will fly by!

I think my hospital does a pre hip replacement class but I missed all that because I went in on a cancellation.  Crutches , chair/bed raisers and a loo seat is all you get from my hospital and I already had the loo seat.  Stingy lot.

I think one of the worst things for me is going to be giving up my independence! Don't get me wrong, my husband is great & will do anything (apart from the ironing)! but he works shifts so I've learnt to do a lot myself. I'm going to miss just popping to the shops & I walk miles with my dog so that's going to be tough. Im having my op at the Nuffield & I just thought they'd be a bit more organised but everyone I've spoken to has never heard of the pre-op hip class! Because I want to be organised I might just buy everything myself! I think you have done marvellously well considering you're on your own x

That's why being able to drive again was such a huge thing for me.  I have hated having to ask for help, even though I know my friends didn't mind.  It was just shopping and the dreaded TED stockings really.  Everything else I managed although the housework went a bit downhill lol

Fantastic news cels - welldone you :-D

Thanks Khippie and spot on with the advice to go slow and steady.

No idea why, but I stupidly flopped down in the chair last night without the usual care I take when sitting down.  A sharp and painful reminder from my hip that 6 weeks is still very early days in this recovery eek

I'm still taking painkillers, no idea what everyone else is doing at this stage but can't see the point in putting up with the aches and twinges if I don't need to.

Im still taking paracetamol, ibuprofen and a small codeine each morning , just because I,m so stiff and sore first thing . Am OK for the rest of the day once ai,ve got going . Seem to recall was on painkillers post op the other two times for the same reason for quite a few months post op. Like you , I was in so much pain for so long I dont really want to put up with any twinges/ soreness  etc now 😊 Also tried to sit on sofa last night but had to get my trusty memory foam cushion after 5 mins as everything was pulling - much better with cushion ! Thanks Bini,

That's reassuring.  I also take a cocodamol 30/500 in the morning, two at night (mainly to help me feel comfortable enough to sleep well) and one in the day if I need it.  Some days I don't.  Sitting is my most uncomfortable position, the fluid in my bum cheek doesn't help.  I was disappointed my consultant didn't give me more feedback about it, "probably a haematoma, it should go away but it's not too bad".

He doesn't have to sit on it frown

Exactly ! They dont get exciting about 'minor' problems although they cause us a lot of grief! Now if you had a huge infected abcess  he,d be very interested ! Oh wait - you certainly dont want that! 😀ive stopped taking anything in the afternoon about a week ago and have been ok in the evening as I usually have a glass of wine with dinner as not working the next day and that works quite well - will see how I am tonight as the usual no midweek drinking rule comes back into play ! I think pain is so subjective and every individual is different . Am amazed some people can ditch them altogether at 2 weeks post op but I,m not one of them - have struggled enough over the last 8 years with nasty chronic pain / agony that I,m not prepared to have any at all now xxx

I don't blame you Bini.  I did try to gve up on pain relief earlier on, mainly because I thought I should, but then I decided to take them if and when I need them.  My body will let me know when to stop.

I'm so dreadfully constipated at the best of times that I avoid anything that'll make it worse .... Don't take anything unless I'm in terrible pain because the knock-on effects are just not worth it

I am so confused right now - I stopped taking celebrex (pain meds) and omezaprol (stomach protector) but darn it .... I am so stiff and sore and wobbly and just miserable - I cancelled my PT appointment because i don't trust my self behind the wheel right now -

Just received an email from GP : What do you want from me ???

plus long story how they are not mindreaders etc - Big sigh ...

My question: to take or not to take - to go through (stopped 5 days ago) to perhaps withdrawel or go back and deal with those side effects ...

One of my favorite people's philosophy: When overwhelmed, take a nap

      big warm hug

I am still taking pain killers at bed time and also during the day if needed . As you know I am at the same stage of recovery as you , looking forward to my 6 week appointment tomorrow :-)

      Hi Renee,

That's a bit of a rude email from your GP!

Could you switch to a lighter painkiller, maybe start with paracetamol and work your way up until you find something that hits the spot?  I guess you are like me and can't take antl-inflammatories, because I take a stomach protector every day due to acid reflux.

So sorry you're not feeling great hun.

I have diverticular disease so constipation is my worst enemy.  I take Regucol every day, a natural fibre supplement.  The hospital were very impressed that I didn't need anything in hospital to counteract the morphine and anaesthetic effects. They called it my magic seeds cheesygrin

Oooh good luck with that hun.  We expect a full report cheesygrin

Fibre just blocks me up even more, unless I include aloe ferox

I drink loads of water with it Annie, but I don't suppose it suits everyone.  I also drink a lot of coconut water.  It's a natural laxative.
