Hi Folks

im thinking of seeing a specialist having avoided the prospect for ages , can anyone give me any encouragement in terms of the treatment you've received and did it help any ? I don't have much confidence in all honesty and don't want probing n poking about if there's no point .

Any feedback gratefully received

Definitely get a diagnosis first. After that there's many treatments, a local vaginal estrogen seems to be the first line of treatment. I use Estrace Cream. Starting dose was 1 gram 1x a day for 14 days and a pea sized amount used on the labia, concentrating on the urethra. Then 2x a week internally and using it every night on the labia. I still have bad days but it's worked better than I expected. I'm also going to pelvic floor physical therapy. I'm not sure where you're from but in the US, the Mona Lisa isn't covered by insurance,if I had the money I'd give it a go. But as I said there's several treatments to try, unfortunately they're not a one size fits all treatment ...

    Good Luck!

      Hi Gigi

i have a diagnosis of Atrophic Vaginitis so eastrogen cream would probably help me , are there any increased  risks in terms of cancer though ? I'm from the UK and the Mona Lisa treatment costs £2,500 but there are no guarantees and it's not a cure so that put me off .

Thankyou for your response it's appreciated

The risks of cancer a very low for topical creams and pessaries because their effect is localised, very little is absorbed into the rest of your system. Ovestin cream contains estriol which is a bioidentical hormone which is known as the protective oestrogen because it protects against the harmful effects of the other two oestrogens, estrodiol and estrone. In fact studies done in Japan show that it protects against cancer and is beneficial to the cardiovascular system. Somewhere in this group or in the HRT group is a whole discussion about its protective effects.

I found my previous post about ovestin:

. It contains a bioidentical oestrogen called estriol which is considered a weak oestrogen but is also a protective oestrogen. It has been used in vaginal creams in Europe and Japan for some years and research studies have shown that it has a protective function and actually protects against cancer and cardiovascular problems (which the other two oestrogen, estrodiol and estrone put you at risk of. Estriol is like the oestrogen that balances out the effects of the other two). Estriol is also very good as helping genitourinary problems.

      Hi Suki

Wow I'm so impressed by your knowledge you've taught me more than any medical professional! Thankyou I'll ask about estriol now x

Well, I am a researcher - not medical mind you - but I do know how to research information I need and sort out what is nonsense from what is scientifically researched.

There is also good research showing that taking (orally) 3g of sea buckthorn oil a day improves the condition of the vaginal wall cells and the thin knees of the vaginal wall skin and it is considered a viable alternative for vaginal atrophy for women who cannot use oestrogen. However, it doesn’t improve moisture / lubrication so sex will not likely still hurt. I take it.

it annoys me that doctors don’t seem to know about these things.

I am so grateful to you this condition has at times reduced me to tears when I reflect back I've had little help really I'm not convinced a specialist will help and hate the thought of the examinations and probing the tenderness  and pain is unbearable . I am going to take your advice . Could I ask would you take the sea buckthorn oil as well as the cream ?

If I can impose once more which sea buckthorn oil is best please ?

I took sea buckthorn oil and applied coconut oil and vit e oil for several years. I never had any pain with my VA but intercourse was difficult so we had to be gentle and use tonnes of oil based lube. It was when intercourse started to hurt and became impossible that I tried the Ovestin - so pleased I did. I still take the sea buckthorn oil because it has no hormones so is just adding to helping me naturally. I use nature’s aid sea buckthorn oil and get it from the shop that has the name of a South American jungle (don’t want the moderator to delete my message).

      Hi Suki

just needed to ask are you taking Ovestin orally or is it the cream you're using ? I am now taking sea buckthorn oil and applying vit e oil or coconut oil ( I assume you use those alternately ? ) just thinking it's a bit confusing knowing which to use and when .

Hi Kay, you need to shop around, I’ve just had a course of Mona Lisa treatment, it cost £1500,and due to my external skin being thin I was given a 4th treatment with no extra cost, i am still healing from 4 th treatment as only 10:days ago, but it’s realky helped my comfort.

      Hi Ljp

That's a good price . I'm going to try Ovestin and vit E oil and take sea buckthorn oil with omega7 if that doesn't work I'm going to consider either the Mona Lisa treatment or the new Diva treatment . I'll b interested to know how you progress I wish you well with it as I know only to well how terrible a condition this is

      Take care , Kay

I use ovestin cream. It is inserted to the he vagina using an applicator. You have to use it every day for two weeks then twice a week. I insert the ovestin just before I go to bed (so it is in all night and doesn’t drip out and has all night to work. On the nights I am not using ovestin I insert a vit e pessary (key e) - I got those online form the US, but they are getting more expensive so I am switching to the Yes oil based lube in applicators (the lube in the applicators contains coconut oil and other natural oils). I apply the coconut oil after every time I use the loo, both internally and externally (I just get a blob of it on a clean finger). Once a day (around the middle of the day) I break open a 400iu oral vit e capsule and squeeze the contents out onto the blob of coconut oil on my finger and apply that internally and externally. If I am out and about I have a small pot of coconut oil in my handbag and after I go to the loo I apply it externally using one of those circular cotton wool pads for make up removal (organic, no bleach ones) because if I am I in a toilet cubicle I can’t wash may hands first (also can’t trust that they would be properly clean in a public loo).

Only problem is the coconut oil makes your knickers oily, and can seep through to the next layer. I work mainly from home so I can do all this nutty stuff and I also go around at home wearing baggy jogging bottoms with no underwear (much more comfortable) or, in the summer, a skirt with no underwear. If you find the oil is messing up your clothes you might want to wear a panti pad (pure cotton, unbleached, no nasty chemicals).

      Hi Suki

thankyou so much invaluable information . My only problem is it's affected my bladder too and I have to wear Tena ladies or I'd be wet all day I only have to bend and I'm wet it's a catch 22 I know I'm better off without them but no way round that until it hopefully calms down

As far as I know ovestin is only available as a cream. The pessaries are called vagifem and they contain estrodiol so, while their effect should be local, that oestrogen is known to have risks albeit minimal due to the local effect and minimal systemic absorption. It really just depends what you get on with. I tried vagifem first but had a bad reaction to it (completely  swelled up inside), so that was a no go.
