Hi this is my second post on here ! I just feel so un well all the time and don't know what to do ? I've started taking Magnesuium to help me sleep and it is quite good, I hear it was supposed to get rid of anxiety but after a promising start I now feel awful again 😢 uptight, feelings of dread, tearful just generally awful . . . Maybe I  should increas the dose or try something else ?  Anyone else have these horrible symptoms ?

Many thanks

Deb x

Hi Debbie sorry you have anxiety it's horrible try valerian from the health food shop it's good for sleeping like magnesium is and it's good gor anxiety .  The other path to follow is a hypnotherapist they teach you calming methods to use its not hypnosis and the results are brilliant. I've done five appointments for stress and am so calm now it's fantastic all I have to do now is listen to tapes well worth trying. I don't know if you are in the uk if you are I can recommend.

Hi. I'm 53 and perimenopausal. Lots of aches and paind but became extremely anxious a couple of weeks ago. Ended up at the doctors. He gave me prescription for anti depressant. Only took 2. Really made me feel ill and more anxious than ever. A work mate recommended Kalms. Off the counter herbal relaxant. You take 2 tabs 3 times a day. In less than a week a felt much better. I had blood tests as well. My iron and vit d levels were low so taking those now.

Feeling better now the anxiety sorted. Sleepinf a bit better as well. Think that makes other symptoms worse.

Hi Debbie you are so welcome. Holland and Barrett do magnesium in a spray form so five sprays at night and five in the morning get the original one look on the Holland and barret site . Valerian is a herb so only one of those . Hypnotherapy I did five sessions and each session you have a tape done for you and I play those.

      Hi Liz,

Thank you for your kind reply 😊 sorry to ask another question ! But is it Holland and Barrats own name ? I was looking at one called 'A Better You' has it given you any skin rashes ? I read that it might ?

Thank you very much again ! I'm very grateful,  Debbie x

      Debbie,

when you first start using it your skin will tingle if you are lacking in magnesium but after a few times of using it you won't feel anything. I use the night time for both day and night time as it has relaxing oils in it which help you to relax.

I use the better you magnesium flakes and make my own 'oil'. Magnesium oil is not oil, it is a solution of magnesium in water but it feels like oil. I dilute mine 50/50 in hot water and use as a spray (acutally I use a dropper as the spray gets clogged up for me). It does give an odd sensation on the skin, sort of stinging, but has never left a rash for me. I put the drops on my abdomen, but have used my inner thighs. You can also use the flakes for foot soaks and baths.

Work your way up slowly! I started with too much and had to go to the bathroom all the time! I think it really helps though because I've slacked off of it and have been really anxious again.

Hi Debbie yes it's called better you spray it's brilliant it tingles but that means you are low in magnesium and it soon wears off . No I have not had any skin rashes just soft skin

I was wondering if you've had a recent blood test debbie. Because sometimes when you get over 40 there may also be a thyroid deficiency. It would be worth checking out along with your hormone levels as well. As a nurse I do know some women put everything down to the menopause when occasionally there are other underlying causes.

      Hi Matron

No have not had any tests ? What would a thyroid deficiency mean ? I don't like going to the Doctors to be honest ! 😢 makes me really anxious ?? Wish we were friends, I would love to know a nurse x you must have plenty of knowledge ! Thank you xx

Hello again debbie. If you had thyroid deficiency you'd feel tired, weepy, lethargic, generally unwell, shakey or panicky. It can be an over or under active thyroid. It's just a thought and something GP's do check on especiy if you are a woman over 40.

Sorry that should read especially if you're a woman etc.

      Hi again Matron,

Thank you for the advice ! I do feel all of those but I just thought it was due to Peri ? I assume that would involve taking medication ? Is it dangerous if it goes un diagnosed . . .

      Thank you

      Debbie x

It's probably peri but best to make sure it's not another condition. IF it is your thyroid gland it would mean taking medication but without it you would never feel any better. Please don't worry this is unlikely but better to rule every possibility out.

It's important to remember that perimenopause sysmptoms are due to hormonal changes and fluctuations and our thyroid is also a balance of hormones.  All those hormones are related. It is common for women to have thyroid issues during perimenopause. I think regular blood work is essential during this time... including a hormone panel at a certain time of the month... also, self diagnosis is not a good idea especially when it comes to certain menopause symptoms like digestive issues or wierd changes in our periods. I think that finding a good doctor you can trust to help you rule out other possible issues is a good idea.
