Hi all, I'm due for surgery in 36 hours and was feeling quite positive about it all. I have to say though that after looking on this forum there have been some really poorly people after their surgery. Is this the norm? I was feeling ok till I read all this.... now feeling apprehensive & slightly nervous. Are there any good news stories? x

Thanks for the good wishes guys, just woke up this morning and it's very very sore, feel like I've been run over then someone's jumped all over my tummy..... I'm not surprised though, this is going to be a long recovery and I'm going to take all the advice given on here. Worse thing for me is having to sleep on my back, it's awful, particularly as I suffer with osteoarthritis as well - the restriction in my movements it's not helping. Two of my wounds look like they need changing but I'm scared to touch them as it's not even 48 hours yet, going to ask my friend who is a district nurse to pop round tomorrow and have a look. Other than that I'm trying to keep a smile on my face... good luck to those having op this week.. it's really fine, it's the recovery that takes time. xx

Well I've managed it to Day 3 post surgery. Still feel battered & bruised but thought I was getting away with no tummy upset.. how wrong was I? Diahorrea has kicked in today & slight nausea. I'm going to keep a food diary to see what triggers it. I've had this morning - a slice of wholemeal toast and half cup of coffee. And at lunch time I just had a cup of tea & 3 ginger biscuits. I'm hopeful it's just my time settling down so fingers crossed it's not long term. I am also still very tired and yesterday afternoon fell asleep for 3 and half hours! lol... Hope everyone is making a speedy recovery & good luck to those still waiting x

Hi, don't forget its still early days and diarrhoea seems to be more common than constipation which is where I am at nearly 4 weeks post op.
Plain food shouldn't trigger it, its just your body healing inside which will take alot longer. Sleep when you feel tired, I still fall asleep every so often and in those early days its your body's way.
Keep us updated with your progress, take care x

Thanks Katherine, I'm just going with the flow. I seem to be sleeping better, just need to curl up on my right side and I'll be happy! 😊 The diarrhea won't do me any harm I could do with losing a couple of lb's, so 'Every cloud'... You take care too... speak soon & thanks for the reply xx

At this point, it's early days for you. Your body will need some time to adjust itself to not having a gallbladder. I'd suggest eating small very low fat meals frequently during the day. Some people need to avoid dairy at first. After I had my gallbladder out I found that I could no longer tolerate coffee, as it triggered diarrhea almost immediately. That's still the case. I also can't tolerate acidic foods. You might want to look up the fodmap foods on line to see what you might be able to eat safely. Take care, and hope you do better in the days to come! xx

Hi Lynda - I'm taking it very easy, so far since Saturday I've managed to eat wholemeal toast (small amount), chicken, soup, a couple of oven chips. Today I had a couple of biscuits and they upset me, so trial & error I think. As you say, it's early days yet so hoping tum settles down soon. Just going to have a little nap, thank you for your reply, take care xxx

Its strange as its so different for each person, I can eat small amounts of dairy, lightly spiced, chocolate which is a must!! But I have eaten lightly, salmon, chicken, jacket potatoes amongst a few but it does vary from person to person and I also think that it depends why the gallbladder was removed, either gallstones or not working correctly as I didn't have all the usual symptoms that others get. I think its very trial and error. The main thing that I would stay away from is fatty food or highly spiced food especially early on.

Once settled I will be adding back healthy fats as they are essential for our body and brain and for our hormones, digesting all our fat soluable vitamins and omegas.. A study done said there was no real reason to tell patients to avoid healthy fats as they found no difference in the study to symptoms.
I am going to be very careful afterwards but I will not go low fat long term, as I personally dont think its healthy to.
I still eat fats now, pork sausage from the orghanic butcher causes me less distress than a potato does. lamb is a no no as well as red meat now. Raw veg causes me way more issues than my husbands stir fried chicken in rice cooked in peanut oil?
Sop yes we are all different and follow our own path

Hi Star,
I eat gluten, lactose free dairy and cheese and do okay. I think everyone is different in how their digestion works and what sets them off.
For instance, I can't eat sausage of any kind...you are working hard on finding what you can tolerate and will keep you healthy! Best of luck to you!
Like Katherine, I have to have chocolate, even if it's just a little...
