I have to confess that I didn't know I had to cut down on wine. I have been happily drinking since diagnosed with PMR and have gone from 20mg of Pred to 8mg without problems. I know I'll regret asking this - what have you been told about about alchol and pred?

I think there is a risk it can increase intestinal bleeding, so should be treated with caution, just like we are careful with painkillers we use when on pred.

Ditto Anhaga - plus in the early days of pred, because of the fatigue and immobility, I was starting to put on weight so had to adjust my calorie intake and this included the wine elementfrown

Hi Anhaga, I have never heard that about red wine, where did you hear about that? I know there can be liver problems, but that is true of alcohol for anyone.

I used to work in a library and for years used the internet to help young people find information.  It's like another limb to me, and if I don't know something I look it up.  My training in the library taught me how to evaluate sites so I think I'm pretty good at finding authentic information - not that one doesn't make mistakes of course.

There should be no problem drinking a glass of red wine while on steroids. I drink red wine and tell myself it is good as it is anti inflammatory!

I'm not a great wine drinker, although will take a glass occasionally.  I have found myself drinking beer a lot more, as our family samples the offerings of a burgeoning local craft brewing industry!  I figure if I can manage to use aspirin to treat headaches while still on pred I can safely imbibe in my rather abstemious way!  This involves my husband and son splitting most of a large bottle and filling my little handmade wine cup with a small share.  I treat alcohol like I treat chocolate - a little of the best goes a long way and is satisfying.

Of course I have my wine! I live in Italy - no-one says not to drink unless it is a medication you MUST not drink with! Or if you are driving - but that goes without saying for me...

Pre-pred I found that the PMR stiffness was better after I'd had a glass of wine - the vasodilatory effect kicking in I suspect.

I believe tonight it is a cheeky little Teroldego novella (eat your heart out Beaujolais nouveau)  :-)

Thank you, that's what I think. Most things work better after a glass of wine or three.  Ciao

Oh, you mentioned Beaujolais Nourveau, I love it!!!  I have spent a lot of time in the Beaujolais region of France near Lyon.  :-)  Anyway I also wanted to say that when I have Chardonnay, I mix it with San Pellegrino and ice.  I also live in CA where it is hot.  I have a lemon tree and add a tablespoon or so of freshly squeezed lemon juice.

Doesn't get much better than that.  I personally believe that PMR in itself has altered our lives drastically, we need to enjoy what we can.  I say moderation is the key.  As long as all blood work is good and you don't feel any other side effects, go for it!!  Life is too short.  I am nearly 80, I am not going to give up sometning I enjoy.  My mother-in-law lived to be 93 and due to high cholesteral, she deprived herself for years of the yummy good foods she always loved.  I always felt that was such a shame.

Oh I miss the taste of a good wine. Every time I drink it, evenjust  three swallows, I end up tipsy and feeling ill. I have no tolerance at all.  Enjoy your wine 🍾

Do you drink your three swallows on an empty stomach?

Depends what you mean by empty. I have a glass or three before my evening meal but I always have lunch.

That sounds like an empty stomach to me.  If you really miss your wine, and I do believe a little of what you love is good for you, why not wait until you've had a little bit of your evening meal?

Oop, sorry Crash, though your comment was from Dee.  Apologies.  I don't think you are the one who is suffering from a swallow or three.

Nope a full meal smile I have bad reactions to all meds. My mom is the same way. She told me a story that her last drink was when she had not even a single glass of wine and took a tumbled down the stairs at a party. I can't rink coffee either.  I am just a sencitive goil.

I have a friend who when she visits and I offer tea requests a cup of hot water.  So basically a mug of tea without the tea.  Not even a slice of lemon.  Perhaps you can find an innocuous substitute for your wine?  I drink ginger tea at night now.

I did find that with heavy reds - now I drink white or the local red which I know I'm safe with. I'm not the only person either!
