Bad Breath/reflux? pnd? infection? Something else?

Hi,

I wasn't sure where to put this duscussion.

I've had bad breath (especially horrendous morning breath) for as long as I can remember. Probably for a good 10 years or so? (I'm 29)

I've also experience what I think is possible post nasal drip (tongue is always coated. Often feel mucus on back of throat and need to clear my thoat)

and some sort of acid reflux in my throat (occasional burning sensation below my adams apple)

Both the possible PND and reflux seemed to come on after already having bad breath for a numbe of years though, so i'm not sure if they're even related? The reflux feeling is fairly infrequent.

I also occasionally get tonsil stones.

I have good oral health. Brush twice per day, floss, moutwash. Dentist confirmed gums are healthy.

Yet I can taste bad breath coming on again shortly after my morning routine.

NOW, I recently took metronidazole for something completely unrelated, and to my utter amazement, my breath became as fresh as a babies! Reflief after a decade! Even my morning breath smelt of nothing.

I was so happy until I read online that other people had experienced this phenomenen, but that the bad breath returns when you stop taking the antibiotic.

I stopped taking it 4 days ago, and I think that my breath may finally be reverting back sad This morning wasn't quite as fresh as yesterdays. I'm depressed now that my bad breath is likely to return in full force within a few days.

I'm wondering if anyone can shed any light?

Anyone been in the same boat and found a cure?

Can any knowledge be gained from the fact that the antibiotic temporaily cured me or not?

    Hi everyone.

    I'm in a similar situation.

I've had severe halitosis for the last 8 years (i'm 27) it's completely messed up my life socially and proffesionally and has cost me a lot of money.

I've seen numerous GP's who have been pretty unhelpful, I've seen several good dentist, alot of ENT specialist and two Gastroenterologist both of them told me 'bad breath doesn't come from the stomach' end of ! They both advised I should go the dentist!!!!

My symptoms are halitosis, bloating, chest pain, smell of flatulence from mouth, fatigue, strange taste in mouth and people regularly complain of the smell of food on my breath.

I had an endoscopy along time ago which showed no signs of redness around the lower esophageal sphincter.

I've tried Gaviscon, Omeprazole and probiotics but with no effect!

I suspect it is probably stomach related maybe LPR, but I'm not sure.

Any advice anyone can give will be much appreciated.

Does anyone know whether it's possible to get Metronidazole without perscription in the UK

Good luck everyone and thanks in advance.

    James

It is probably coming from the very back of the tongue. Most people dont notice the severe coating you can get at the back. Once I found it and removed it then bad taste and smell gone forever.

I know this response is a year later, but if you haven't found relief I have just learned that bad breath can be caused by a dysfunctional gallbladder which can be very hard to diagnose, since often times even those with gallstones don't show symptoms.

Hi! I´m experiencing the same persistent problem since mid 2013. Around 2 months before, I was facing several digestive problems, except breath, which was the "normal" bad breath so far, but nothing compared to this. I had endoscopy, which was negative for h.pylori. But mid 2013 I was sick and had to take azythromicin, antibiotic for 8 days. For the 2 last days, I didn´t have any bad breath, not even morning bb. But after this, the nightmare began. At this time, I was moving to another country. Went to several doctors and dentists, tried every single product, healthier food, elimination diet, etc. This week somebody mentioned in another group that gallblader can be the cause. Do you know which exam can detect it? Or where to find more information? Tks!

I have also have post nasal drip which can cause bad breath by itself sometime, have tried nasal irrigation but doesn't really help!

I think stress and sleep levels do play a part in it, when I'm tired and stressed it does make it worse. Unfortunately even when I'm super chilled and sleeping loads it stil doesn't go away though.

I've tried several probiotics the only one to have any affect are Optibac, they seem to help my stomach problems, but not 100% sure about my bad breath.

Are there better one's I could try?

    Thanks again.

      Hi Brandon,

I'm a Speech-Language Pathologist and I evaluate and treat patients with a wide range of swallowing disorders. When a patient comes to me with complaints of bad breath and difficulty swallowing, my first thought is a Zenker's Diverticulum. I would then proceed to evaluate the patient using a Modified Barium Swallow Study (also called videofluroscopy) to identify the cause of swallowing difficulty or, in that case to identify/ locate the Zenker's. I'm not sure if this is the cause of the symptoms you've been having, but based on your symptoms, I would recommend researching Zenker's Diverticulum, and also talking to your doctor about a swallowing (modified barium swallow) or upper GI (barium swallow) study.

      Hi Caro,

Thanks for your revelation. This completely opens a new way looking into this problem. I occasionaly have difficult in swallowing and of cause bad breath. Would contact a doctor to explore this option.

      Thanks.
