Bad Breath/reflux? pnd? infection? Something else?

Hi,

I wasn't sure where to put this duscussion.

I've had bad breath (especially horrendous morning breath) for as long as I can remember. Probably for a good 10 years or so? (I'm 29)

I've also experience what I think is possible post nasal drip (tongue is always coated. Often feel mucus on back of throat and need to clear my thoat)

and some sort of acid reflux in my throat (occasional burning sensation below my adams apple)

Both the possible PND and reflux seemed to come on after already having bad breath for a numbe of years though, so i'm not sure if they're even related? The reflux feeling is fairly infrequent.

I also occasionally get tonsil stones.

I have good oral health. Brush twice per day, floss, moutwash. Dentist confirmed gums are healthy.

Yet I can taste bad breath coming on again shortly after my morning routine.

NOW, I recently took metronidazole for something completely unrelated, and to my utter amazement, my breath became as fresh as a babies! Reflief after a decade! Even my morning breath smelt of nothing.

I was so happy until I read online that other people had experienced this phenomenen, but that the bad breath returns when you stop taking the antibiotic.

I stopped taking it 4 days ago, and I think that my breath may finally be reverting back sad This morning wasn't quite as fresh as yesterdays. I'm depressed now that my bad breath is likely to return in full force within a few days.

I'm wondering if anyone can shed any light?

Anyone been in the same boat and found a cure?

Can any knowledge be gained from the fact that the antibiotic temporaily cured me or not?

    Hi all,

I have just come back from my first ENT appointment and thought I'd update you all. If you scroll back through this thread, you will see some posts from me with my symptoms so you can compare with your situation. I had a scope done and apparently I have a slightly deviated septum, which I was not aware of but has never been a problem until the PND started. The ENT said not to worry about it unless it was bothering me. The only time it might have been an issue is when I have had a cold my left nostril is apparently prone to block more than the right side. I have noticed my left sinus has been blocked on and off the last couple of months since the PND started. It was not blocked initially but started more recently (my PND has been going on for about 6-8 months with varying severity).

The important finding was that I have an inflamed voicebox and the ENT said it was caused by silent reflux. I am now on a 3 month course of PPI's and the Dr said I should start to notice some relief within 3-4 weeks but to come back if no improvement. For the first time really yesterday I had really bad heartburn as well and I'm not too sure what triggered that. I can testify that I am one of the people who has 100% never had heartburn/indegestion the entire time I have been experiencing this reflux until yesterday and it was only in the evening. The ENT could not see anything alarming in my nose and throat until she hit my voicebox and said she could clearly see it was swollen so I'm really hoping this is my answer as she says. I also cannot 100% confirm that I have had noticeable bad breath this entire time. I've been assuming I have because I've had a bad taste in my mouth and my tongue has been coated off and on but apparently the bad taste is the acid and the times I've had a coating, it might just be normal but I've been so hyperaware of my mouth and throat the last 6 months that I may have just started picking up on changes in my mouth because I check it a million times a day.

Apparently this was likely all triggered by stress/sickness. I had glandular fever mid last year and was sick a lot.

Anyway, I will update everyone again in about a month or so with progress. If you haven't already, get silent reflex checked out. I'm now looking up foods that promote acid production so I can avoid them from now on as well for the best results with the PPI's. Don't lose hope. Our bodies don't just randomly exhibit symptoms like this for no reason so there is a medical answer out there for everyone, I'm sure of it. I'm hesitant to relax just yet until I have some results but knowing now there is something going on anatomically is a relief. My worst nightmare would have been no findings at all. Best of luck.

Oh, and one final point. I also have perfect oral hygiene and no issues with gums/teeth. I have been to the dentist and a hygienist twice in the last 6 months with no issues. So for those of you who don't usually have gum/teeth issues, you can likely rule that out as I did.

Well Mike just take the metronidazole once again. And if required always. Honestly there's nothing I wouldn't do to get rid of this curse. Even if it's going to cause health complications.

Maybe you have salivary duct stones. You might be stressing out too much causing your saliva flow to slow down where it calcifies in your salivary ducts. If you feel itching right below your earlobes and a weird pressure or pain in the same area when you eat, that may be the problem.Try drinking lots of water and sucking on something sour a couple times a day while milking the glands manually to stimulate flow. You can google how to do that. A lemon slice is a good idea because it already has antibacterial properties. Either that or sugar-free lemon drops. Don't over-do it on the water though, your saliva will become too watered down and won't be able to properly re-mineralize your teeth.

    Hi Mike,

I just happen to read ur case when I googled for the symptoms..Looks like God sent,my symptoms are similar to ur symptoms you mentioned above..About 2 yrs back.I happen to get this swollen and inflammated gums after taking a course of antibiotics(amoxycillin ) followed by Danzen..But since then I always get bad and foul smell in my mouth which is very frustrating..Smell is so strong that it causes naseua ..It comes up some times in a day ..Smell is strong some times and some times very mild..I hv visited quite a number of dentists..Many of them told me there is no problem with my teeth or Gums..I did hv some gastric conditions for which I am taking Pro biotics..6 months I visited a GP who prescribed me a Metronidazole Gel(Mild 10mg/gmof the Gel)..Once I applied this to my amazement there was absolutley no smell or symtoms for nearly 4 days..But moment I stopped applying this Gel the symptoms came back..After realising this I was using this Gel for last 1 month where my condition improved very much..but occassionally hv sypmtoms. But also i had sore throat intermittently..Recently I visited a periodentist who after examining my gums said they are infected(with Plaque and tartar) and needs deep cleaning of gums..I had gone for first round of deep cleaning( where left side of the mouth and gums are cleaned)..Se 1 day of the first round cleaning I find suddenly my foul smecond round (Right side ) due next week..After the first round my foul smell and nausea became worse today(..I had stopped applying metrodanizole gel 1 week back)..Now wondering whther i should proceed with next week cleaning..I found your case today which makes me feel comfort becoz I hv a friend who is alsi going thru same symptoms..Any feedback for me?

    Read all about it.

You might want to try the oral probiotic containing Blis K12 apparently it fights off plaque and good for the throat and ears and nose. I read on one review that this bloke started taking it and it cured his coated tongue and no more bad breathj and also he has not had one single tonsil stone since. I am curious so I have ordered a bottle which are lozengers. With it stopping tonsil stones supports my thoery that these are formed at the back of the tongue and get collected by the tonsils when the coating gets disturbed. My bad breath and tonsil stones stopped the moment i started cleaning the back of my tongue properly. I still get a coated tongue but find that scraping it twice per day keeps it at bay. I am currently trying to stop the yellow coating which is why i have purchased this product.

I will report back after using it.

I have so much respect for you mike for creating this forum, you have indeed saved my life and have given me and many more hope, God bless you.

ok, i also have bad breath, on a scale to ten of its severity i'd give it a fat 10.

Tonsilitis- iv suspected and had a tonsilectomy= result- no BB cure sad

Sinusitis- iv suspected and had an operation done by an ENT specialist= result-no BB cure sad

Wisdom teeth- iv suspected and had them removed= result- no BB cure sad

Recently suspected Silent reflux, went to a Gastro doctor hoping for him to tell me there's something wrong in my osophagus or stomach, before he even did an endoscopy or whatever it is he checked my throat with a lil torche and told me straight away that i have post nasal drip and he gave me 500mg Betanox, 400mg Trichazole, 150mg Ranihexal and it cured my bad breath 100% but..........for only 2 weeks. You guys shouldve seen how excited i was in the two weeks, i was a whole new person already making future plans, dudes i dont wanna lie having had good breath in the two weeks was GREAT, id do anything just so the rest of my life is like the two weeks iv lived with good breath. ok cool where was I ??...after the sad realisation that the bad breath returned after two weeks since iv taken the prescription I then went back to living like a hermit but, a smart one, so i have made an appointment with the same gastro doctor who gave me two weeks in paradise, i want to inform him that the medication worked BUT good breath only lasted two weeks.

ok, what am I thinking at this point, im thinking i have sensitive sinuses which are easily infected by allergies such as dust (im a Civil Engineer- i work in dust) hence causing post nasal drip, then the dumb bacteria invites itself for a party down throat street in mucous boulevard. but see now thats w'hat im thinking, however im an engineer not a doctor so let me see the Gatro doctor, hear what he says and ill update u fellas.

oh, before i go, moneygun, dude i respect you aswel, you have also contributed towards my journey to finding Fresh breath, and we are close, so close!!

greek words like "metronidazole" and "Hpylori" got the spotlight on this forum so let me hear what the doctor has to say first, if he gives up ill definately try out metro and get tested for Hpylori (if i may ask though- isnt Metronidaze used to treat womens vaginal infections? you dont have to answer that lol, even if metro was used as an insect killer i couldnt care less, if it works id take it faster than the speed of light. smile

    HI everyone,

I have the worst problem. I have FBO (fecal breath/body odor). My friends and co-workers would ask me if I farted, or they say something like it smells like poop here. One had the courage to tell me not to SHART (sh*t and fart). I have had a tonsillectomy 4 years ago, and my ENT said she had removed my tonsil stones as well. I do have all the symptoms mentioned here.. post nasal drip, sensation of lump on my throat, sinus congestion for like over 2 years, bloating, excess gas, belching, constipation. I have tested negative for H. Pylori. Currently, my GI had given me a probiotic sample (Align) to take, I'm on my 3rd day. Been taking activated charcoal, chlorofresh (said to be an internal deodorizer), digestive enzymes, cleanse more for colon, oil of oregano, aloe vera. Been changing my diet to vegan. I use therabreath toothpaste and mouthwash. But still, the fecal odor persists.

Worst of all, I ain't sure where it's coming from..either from my mouth or down there. I'm just relieved knowing that I am not alone on this problem although mine is a lot worst. I hope we could finally find the culprit for this and get ourselves treated.

I have PND and silent reflux and I have cured my bad breath and not had a single tonsil stone now for about 7 months

Congratulations!  Now that is great news!  It will benefit other participants who have PND.  What I'm about to share is not intended to depress, but to remind.  Man evolved into a skunk-like mammal to discourage saber-toothed tigers from venturing into man's caves and eating him.  If so, then is it any wonder why there are so many ways for us to stink?  Personally, I failed to appreciate the guy who was standing in line in front of me at the post office.  He was kickin' so badly that I had to resist the temptation of cursing at him, but I did get out of line, stood far away from him, and waited for Skunkman to take his turn.
