Hello fellow Bisoprolol buddies - I cannot actually believe that I didn't think of doing a search on Bisoprolol earlier as it is so comforting to have discovered this web page. I have been taking Bisoprolol Fumarate 5mg daily for the past 3 years following a frightening episode in town which resulted in my spending a week in the Cardiac ward of our local hospital. I had SVT while in hospital and the 'specialists' couldn't actually put a cause to my soaring blood pressure and rapid heartbeat. So, I've been told to stay on these tablets for life... I'm 48 now, was 45 then.
The comforting thing about reading the majority of these posts is that so many people are feeling ridiculous levels of tiredness; I don't recognise myself from 3 years ago. This isn't whingeing, just stating a fact. I have piled on the pounds - particularly blubby around my midriff - yet I eat less than ever. I am sometimes so overcome by exhaustion that I have to stop even the most trivial of chores. I have lost my 'get up and go', yet used to be so active with my three kids. I used to be so house proud, yet now can'tbe bothered other than to 'keep on top' of the housework. I used to love socialising, again, can't be bothered most of the time and when I do, I am glad when it is over. I love the peace and quiet of my own company so much more now and feel exhausted by company. Yet I AM ONLY 48 YEARS OLD!!!
I realise I am lucky to be alive, to be uncursed by serious ills, but still, it is healthy to have a little moan now and then, and gratifying to feel online empathy with other 'sufferers'. I find that my partner and children don't really understand - can't blame them, I don't truly either.
Take care one and all.

I have previously commented on the effects of Bisoprol on this site and the effect it had on my wife Maxine and how I got the cardiologist to eventually change it to Atenolol which does not harm my wife in any way.
Well 2 years ago I had an Ablation for Atril Flutter which was successful, my Cardiologist said it could come back as Atril Fibrillation.
Last Friday a week ago we ate out and even during the meal I did not feel to good and contracted Gastroenteritis Virus which is doing the rounds at the moment.
Without going in to the whole story I ended up in casualty in the Royal Sussex County Hospital and because of the virus had to go in a private room .
The virus doubled my Blood pressure and also my pulse rate and put my heart out of sync and putting it in to Flutter and Fibrillation.
After umpteen ECGs Blood and ureen tests etc, the Doctor said to get my stats down I would have to take Bisoprol, to which I said no, he then said that I could not go home until everything came down, so I had no choice in the matter.
A bit ironic bearing in mind I had t0 fight to get my wife of it. Well I had to agree and he said just 1.25mg but they only had 2.5mg, one hour later no difference or any effects, so I had to take another 2.5mg and another hour passsed and still no effects.
I have only met one person who takes Bisoprol with no effects, so it may be I am the second one.
To be continued.
Ken.

Hi Maxine50
I am on Bisoprolol 2.5mg and after 3 years I can safefly say you WILL get the side effects - it just takes time. When I first started taking it the cadio nurse infomed me that it would take up to 12 months for my body to absorb enough of the medication for it to start having the desired medical results. I now wish I had read up on Bisoprolol straight away and stopped taking it before I had even started.
I dont wish side effects on you - I just believe it will take a while before they become obvious and by then you will be on the long road to alternatives if any.

Hi Maxine50
I meant to say thank you also for mentioning the alternative medication Atenolol - I have not heard of it before but will now definitely look into it. Also thank you for sharing your story and helping someone like me realise that I am not the only person who feels the way we do taking Bisoprolol

I have searched the web over and over reading stories about the effects of beta blockers in hope to find some peace in knowing that things will get better. I am 45 and about 2 months ago I finally went to a cardio for rapid heart rate I had been having for quite a long time. Family and friends told me for years nothing was wrong with me I was just anxious but I knew that wasn't the case. I was diagnosed with Tachacardia and after many tests and holter monitor I was prescribed Meteprolol but it tanked my BP I couldn't take it so doc changed me to Biso 5MG and again BP way too low so now I am on 2.5MG at night. It helps my HR perfecly however the side effects and low BP are an issue. I wear compression socks eat more salt etc. to try and keep BP up. It's just really depressing sometimes. I mean I am 45! I am dizzy all the time, constantly checking HR and BP readings, so so tired and sometimes just a general feeling of sick like the flu. I was so active before all of this and now I just take one day at a time. Cleaning house? Ha that is a rarity these days. I can have moments of feeling okay IF I am sitting at my desk or in bed at home. Now I just need to figure out how to get through what should be the active fun part of my days.
I can relate to your family not understanding. I know my boyfriend is so tired of hearing I feel bad. I am sick of hearing it as well. Does this get better? I sure hope so.
Hope you are feeling better and thank you for sharing your story!

I will be talking to the doctor to find out how I can get around this medicine as soon as possible. Would like to hear from people who have stopped taking Bisoprolol after a couple of years and what side effects they have experiencied.
Best wishes to all.

I had the same problem with bisoprolol on its lowest dose.
I am a paramedic; if you set up the stopwatch on your phone, find the pulse at your wrist and count the beats over 15 seconds then x by 4, you get your pulse rate. On the lowest dose bisoprolol mine was slow, sometimes dropping below 40 which is certainly slow enough to account for acute tiredness. (Fit athletes can't be very healthy with a slow pulse; but in most of us a rate below 40 is absolute bradycardia and a reason for investigation by a doctor.)
My cardiac consultant switched me to verapamil 40mg three times per day and was much better than on the bisoprolol. Everyone is different and it will depend on what your doctor advises, but it might be worth trying.

Hi my story started back in 2012ish when I was having a really bad time. I started getting what I can only describe as panic attacks. I the went away on a couple of lads weekends with booze as the theme. I found after a night drinking I started getting chest pain racing hesrt numb arms and jaw ache and was up and down peeing like a race horse. NexT day I was tired but ok again and this happened each time. Fortunately I only do that drinking every so often. I then started organising a works do which was very stressful and I got the same symptoms again. This started to happen regularly until I had a rally bad attack in bed and was rushed to hospital where they declared a heart attack. I was put on blood thinners Ramipril and Bisoprolol
From then the attacks kept coming but I gradually noticed my health mobility energy were all getting worse. I walked with a stick but was quite active but this started to get more challenging. I had a couple of bad attacks at the end of last year and I've got to a stage where I can walk only a tiny distance I get exhausted get chest and jaw pain AFIB out of breath and my legs are now so weak. My cardio guy wanted to put me on a horrible drug for my afib and I was so concerned about the drug I started scouting the Internet and found your amazing site. It made me think maybe my heart and legs are not getting worse by the day maybe it's the Bisoprolol at fault and reading the posts pretty much the symptoms put ouT are mine. So I have decided after taking it daily for 2 and a half years and getting gradually incapacitated i need to weane off them which I started yesterday. Thanks to everyone for opening my eyes to this drug maybe now I can get some quality of life back.

Having been on 2.5mg bisoprolol for around three years now I find that my BP and ectopic beats are managed well.
A cardiologist put me on these.
However apart from the cold fingers, I do find that nausea, a bit of a noisy stomach and being slightly loose on the toilet area still present after all this time.
I'm sorry for not reading 12 pages of this thread but are my symptoms fairly typical for that of bisoprolol.?
I do feel fatigue but that is difficult to associate directly with the drug. Sometimes my mouth gets a little dry.
Thanks for any advice and glad to find this group.

I know exactly how you feel. It was the same for me...6 years of bisoprolol, same side effects as you plus others, doctors not listening to me.... then I discovered this site. I read it all. If you look back you will see my posts from some time ago.
Briefly...I’ve stopped all b/blockers..still troubled with a / fib...persistent, jittery feeling in chest all the time...But...side effects gone, back to thinking straight,no longer a zombie, falling asleep, I can walk ...not feeling as if I would fall over..etc.
My bop is ok, pulse still erratic!
I tried atenolol...same side effects! I i tapered off these...withdrawal awful. Lots of anxious feelings, palps, panic attacks. It took ages before these withdrawal effects subsided...months! However, I am fine now...except for the constant jittery feeling due to the a fib. I take rivaroxiban and low dose rampril.
Read all you can on here, take strength from others and don’t be fobbed off by your doctor. Beta blockers are a life saver for some, but they're not for me. Hope this gives you some insight.

I was on Bisprolol for a few months but it made me very sick. My bowels stopped up as my body's metabolism slowed down, even after taking laxatives, and I had nausea 24 hours of the day for months. I could feel the drug poisoning my body, and after losing 50 pounds in weight I decided that enough as enough.
I am a Christian, and so exercising faith in Jesus, and following His 8 natural laws of health, Nutrition, Exercise, Water, Sunlight, Temperance, Rest, Fresh Air, and Trust in Divine Power, I managed to wean of the drug.
How practically? First reducing the dose for two to three days, cutting out most sugar and salt, and by waking up at 6 am every morning and having a good walk. Eating an alkaline diet, with plenty of cabbage and beetroot and lentils, to help cleanse and build the blood. Having prune juice doses daily to start the bowels going (this took about a month or two to resolve), and having faith in the Lord in Hs promises to heal.
It took two attempts to come of the drug but I have been now drug free for 15 months or so, and am a lot healthier. My heart rate may rise up now and again, but only if i eat too much sugar, then it will resettle.
It is all about your lifestyle, drugs are not needed and cannot cure disease or sickness, nature can do its work if allowed to.
I strongly advise all, slowly, as the body permits, wean off this drug, as it will slowly poison you to death if you rely upon it. The Person who made the human body has His own remedies freely available in nature. Just eat the correct foods, drink plenty of water, and exercise, and keep the mind free from stress through prayer and serving and loving others.
Here are the remedies I followed:
Take care all.

When I visited my doctor around a month ago they increased my 2.5mg Bisoporol to 3.75mg. That seems to be controlling my BP more effectively as well as lowering my ectopic beats and my pulse rate. My pulse rate could be quite high before starting bisoprolol so in respect of the BP and pulse rate it is good.
BUT and a very big BUT I'm sure the side effects are quite debilitating at times.
Tiredness and exhaustion is almost constant and indegestion and stomach noises is not good.
Nausea is also an issue.
These have increased since increasing my dose.
However my GP seems to be quite dismissive that they are caused by Bisoprolol. Sometimes that causes me to doubt myself..!
If I do try and push for a change I imagine that is going to be a challenge and whilst bisoprolol is not the first choice for BP it does work well with reducing my pulse rate.
Sometimes I feel that it can be as much of a battle dealing with a drugs side effect as it is in controlling the issue that you are taking it for in the first place.
Rock and a hard place comes to mind
