Blotchy red rash/irritated skin on penile head (lasted for over 3 moths now)?

Posted , 410 users are following.

Part of the skin on the head of my penis has become slightly red and is causing some pain/irritation.

It first appeared the day after I used a condom so I think I must have had a reaction to the latex or some other substance in the condom.

The tip of the penis became super sensitive and noticeably hurt whenever it touched my underwear.

The skin was and still is noticeably red close to and directly around the meatus. This redness gets worse and bigger after I've come out the shower or masturbated.

An hour or so after ejaculation, I get a slight burn/irritation at the very end of the urethra when I urinate and this can last for a few days before subsiding. This has put me off from masturbating as much now.

This has lasted for about 3 months now with no signs of improvement.

I saw a doctor and was prescribed timodine/hydrocortisone cream and this didn't have much effect and am slightly worried it may just make things worse so have stopped using it for now.

It almost seems as if the redness comes from within the skin rather than on the surface.

I don't think its balanitis as I haven't had that for over 12 years when I was a kid and that was with the usual smegma discharge etc, whereas this is just redness.

I've attached images to show how it looks straight after showering, which is when the redness is at its worst and the contrast between the normal skin colour and the redness can be clearly seen.

I went today for a very comprehensive and thorough exam and consultation with the best infectious disease specialist in my area...

I presented him a thorough timeline of my symptoms and explained my current remaining symptoms, which are, the pink/red/purple patch of inflammation on the top of glans leading into urethra, occasional testicle and bladder pain... I also presented my 4 main theories of cause he ruled out all but 2 and the 1 in particular he felt confident in was "prostadynia". He also almost rules out mycoplasma genitalium based on my symptoms and I tested negative for it, but as a precautionary measure prescribed me 14days of azithro..

Hpv he definitely ruled out, although he confirmed that hpv can present in this way (balanitis) he says there is nooo way it would have manifested in 4 days post exposure the way mine did. He also ruled out other bacterial/fungal infections saying they would have progressed much more in the 12weeks I've been dealing with this and would present more of a moist rash.

I agree with "dan79808" that this forum must contain a variety of issues we all can't all have the same underlying cause.

I'm going to trust this doctors judgement and pursue further the diagnosis of this being prostadynia. It makes sense in my case as my symptoms have definitely tapered off as time went on and I tried to have less anxiety about it, I've also been doing yoga and pelvic floor/groin stretching. Another thing that has drastically helped is Epsom salt baths...

Curious, is there a way to link to your original post/symptoms? Thanks.

Thanks for sharing Jon. REALLY, REALLY helpful information for thousands of people right here. Given the caliber of the doctor, this holds ALOT of value also. Just think how many men this helps to steer in the right direction...

I have a few issues with this diagnosis though...Prostadynia is basically just a catch all term when no cause can be found.... everything has a cause, trauma, infection etc. did he speak about what he thought caused this or set it off???

I REALLY do agree that this could be prostate related, as I've mentioned, my symptoms are prostate related also...prostate issues can irritate the urethra and cause pain all along urethra or ONLY at the tip...so makes sense.

HPV can infect within a few days so not sure what he means by that...in my case, I acquired HPV, the balanitis started 1 week into antibiotics though...approx. 3 weeks after the experience....just no way of knowing if it's HPV induced or from antibiotics...

Very interesting to hear about his diagnosis regarding fungal/yeast....I can probably rule that one out then also..

      I will try epsom salts....thanks

I've just started using a "prostate cushion" also, I sit for very long periods of time at a computer....I notice A HUGE difference already.... I was really skeptical but when you think about it, we literally sit right on our prostate, squeezing bloodflow off in an area that get's little bloodflow to begin with......

Another interesting ancedotal tidbit of info to help in understanding this issue..... as I heal, I currently have mild soreness, 1-2/10 at tip and surrounding (almost feels bruised) and I find as I heal, that feeling is almost turning into a "numbness" sensation as opposed to a "pain"...

so the interesting thing is, the other day, as I dipped in boric acid, I sat bare ass naked on floor tiles in the bathroom, right on the apex of my bum, the two "pointy" bones that you can feel through your butt cheeks and basically my butt fell asleep....well you know what else fell asleep because of it...my penis, specifically the tip became numb, basically the same sensation as described above, only x10.... so logically that makes me think this could be related to nerves in the butt cheeks? like wtf.... I also noticed a small, acute looking bruise on my buttcheek, no idea how it got there, no way of knowing if it's related to anything, just a weird thing to have on a really big fleshy piece of skin that can absorb most impacts without bruising.

Another thing, when working my legs at the gym, seems to make a noticeable difference, seems to loosen everything up down there.... really do agree this is pelvic floor muscle related and prostate related..

apologize for the long posts gentlmen, just trying to get it all out there, help others and get this fixed up.

      Cheers

I'm not sure how to link my original post so I will do a quick overview...

Many of my original symptoms i now am attributing to my high stress/anxiety about the situation. I have had extreme anxiety about other unrelated issues in the past which brought on identical symptoms as some of the symptoms/sensations I had this time (i.e. pins&needles, neuropathy, night sweats/sleeplessness, diarrhea, fatigue, body aches)... The mind is a powerful thing and when you're in full time fear and health anxiety you become hypersensitive as your body is in "fight or flight" mode. Believe me I was extremely sceptical of any of that being anxiety/stress related, but I now know it's true, because as soon as I received conclusive negative results for all stds majority of my symptoms went away! I was extremely afraid of all the worst case scenarios and as soon as my tests were conclusive(reconfirmed today by I.D. dr), a huge weight was lifted and symptoms as well... *i am in no way saying this is the case for everyone, but this seems to be my story...

Ok so, this all started after receiving unprotected oral, which I immediately followed with dowsing my genitals with extra strength hand sanitizer as well as shooting it into my urethra!! Do not try this at home😣!

3days later this blotchy red inflammation started on the topside of my glans(as in the side that rubs shorts *I am circumcised)

Day 5-7 started to have burning on glans and in urethra, discomfort in bladder and testicle, slight urge to urinate constantly. Inflammation much more prominent when erect and specifically post ejaculation.

It's definitely mild in appearance compared to some I've seen on this thread, but quite similar looking to the original poster's pics.

Basically those are my symptoms persistent to this day, except the urge to urinate no longer exists(possibly from less stress). The extent of inflammation has gotten better as well(again maybe from less stress).

I never had fever or any flu like symptoms...

So now I'll try to answer your questions... The doctor today said that the prostadynia could have very well been started by the hand sanitizer or some sort of mild infection, which even though it may be gone now the trauma and or stress would exacerbate and prolong prostadynia.. I agree it is a "blanket diagnosis" but most diagnostics about this situation are, and in my case it makes a lot of sense, also my symptoms fit to a tee in the doctors opinion (he even mentioned some symptoms I had that I didn't mention to him).

And to your other question, he said that there is no way that hpv would manifest my symptoms in 3 days as mine did, he says the fastest incubation period for hpv to present as balanitis is 3+ weeks.

Clearly, even admitted by the dr., this is a tough thing to have a real specific diagnosis for. But I am gonna roll with the prostadynia theory as I continue to improve I will post updates!

      Best wishes to all🤙🏽🤙🏽🤙🏽

      Edit

Pelvic pain syndromes, such as Category III chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CP/CPPS) may have no initial trigger other than anxiety, often with an element of OCD, panic disorder, or other anxiety-spectrum problem.[4][5][6][7] This is theorized to leave the pelvic area in a sensitized condition resulting in a loop of muscle tension and heightened neurological feedback (neural pain wind-up)

Ok thanks for the info...so helpful, really do appreciate it.

3+ weeks for balanitis due to HPV is right on the money in my case...and the course of antibiotics I was on, I think just made it worse.

From my research, CP/CPPS is VERY real and is most likely big factor for most people experiencing these symptoms. But I feel it's caused by infection or physical trauma/irritation/obstruction of nerves/muscles and very rarely to be caused solely by stress/anxiety (but anything can happen)...

I've been looking into all things pelvic floor, I suggest everyone google "prudendal nerve" and "prudendal neuralgia"..... crucial nerve that can cause all sorts of problems in the pelvic region....it's even autonomic, means it bounces back signals that can effect other muscles/organs, cause sweating, affect heartrate etc. respirator, sexual arousal... pretty crazy stuff...here is the kicker, it runs from the ischial tuberosity (sitz bones), through the pelvis, integrates with pelvic floor, perineum and into the genitals.....BOOOM! read my post above, trying to figure out why sitting on hard surface made my butt fall asleep and gave me a numb/tingling sensation similar to my current static symptoms, only magnified... VERY interesting stuff.....the prudendal nerve is probably involved in my case, probably irritated from the HPV infection...

Becoming educated on the pelvice region has really opened my eyes to how connected that whole area is in terms of muscle/nerves... there is a reason why after years of research, the medical community is more and more diagnosing genital/groin pain as referred pain from pelvic floor muscle/nerve issues...

So I think I'll update my current diagnosis to Prostadynia (not quite CPPS, havn't reached + 3 months yet) as caused by HPV infection...

My current highest level of pain/numbness/irritation is 2/10. Right at the tip. The meatus has the slightest redness to it and a small, slightly "sunburnt" patch on top of glans (head)....

I have feeling of slight swelling in prostate area at times...prostate cushion helps IMMENSELY, actually even makes ALL pain go away (even at tip) while I sit on it...

Thanks to A TON of research and forums like this, I feel pretty confident with this diagnosis for myself, like you mentioned, it provides relief, just having a good solid diagnosis. HOWEVER, I must say, the only thing that I still have on my mind, is why the top of glans and meatus are still slightly "sunburnt" "redish" ever so slightly swollen.....not sure why nerve or muscle issues would cause this, to me, it means local infection of that area.....but is it just the HPV virus running its course?? I still have in the back of my mind that there is STILL bacteria/yeast/fungal/parasite at play. My question to you would be, did the doctor mention where the redness on top of glans came from, and why it's still there, if EVERYTHING else was negative?

      ?thoughts?

Did you find out what it was? And does your teasticle hurt and does it feel like pins or itch?

Hey Canadian - have you been tested for HPV? The obvious next question is are you positive?

TO ALL,  I’ve had the same problem. And it is just a sensitive skin thing. Not too worry I found a cream on amazon for 15 bucks that will help every one of you in one week. Apply directly after you shower before you go to bed! The cream is called Lanolin cream. By intensive care!  All your problems will be solved in a week. And you all better thank me for this advice. Lol. Enjoy your parts once again

Can you post a direct link. I don't see the one by intensive care but by other manufactures.

I tried lanolin too. It’s essentially nipple cream for nursing mothers. It’s very thick and coats nicely.  I use Lansinoh brand HPA Lanolin. It’s 100% natural and hypoallergenic.  Says  it’s ‘ safe for mom and baby’ so it seems like it would be safe on other  tender areas too. In fact, it’s so benign that a nursing mother doesnt have to wash it off before nursing again.  Good luck. So far it really helps.

Hello . Is the redness on your penis head always there ? I mean even if your penis is not erection ? Thank you

So, around a year ago I had unprotected sex with a girl I met at a club. A few days after, I noticed that my glans were red around the bottom and my urine started to smell. Ever since, I've had smelly urine an overactive bladder and redness on my glans. I've noticed that drinking alcohol makes the problem 10 times worse. After a night out of drinking cider, I always come back to smellier urine and much worse redness.

I started to think that the problem was yeast related, so I ordered some flucazole, which was one 500mg tablet. I even tried doxycycline and another antibiotic which was used to treat urethritis. Whilst the urethritis medication eased my bladder, I still had redness around my glans and my bladder was still overactive.

Often my penis gets itchy and when I go to a sauna, my redness gets much worse. I'm hoping its yeast related and am starting a VERY low carb diet as of today. It not so much the redness that's bothering me, it's the overactive bladder. Whenever I go out on a night out and drink alcohol, I'm constantly back and forth to the toilet. I was never like this before I slept with the girl and obtained the redness

This is almost the exact same thing that happened to me! It’s been since january since i’ve had alcohol. However, i do believe i never heal is because i keep masterbating so i never let myself fully heal. The only thing is i don’t think i got it from my friend because everytime ive been with her , there has never been a problem. I believe mine started because i didn’t shower after i had sex.
