Blotchy red rash/irritated skin on penile head (lasted for over 3 moths now)?
Posted , 410 users are following.
Part of the skin on the head of my penis has become slightly red and is causing some pain/irritation.
It first appeared the day after I used a condom so I think I must have had a reaction to the latex or some other substance in the condom.
The tip of the penis became super sensitive and noticeably hurt whenever it touched my underwear.
The skin was and still is noticeably red close to and directly around the meatus. This redness gets worse and bigger after I've come out the shower or masturbated.
An hour or so after ejaculation, I get a slight burn/irritation at the very end of the urethra when I urinate and this can last for a few days before subsiding. This has put me off from masturbating as much now.
This has lasted for about 3 months now with no signs of improvement.
I saw a doctor and was prescribed timodine/hydrocortisone cream and this didn't have much effect and am slightly worried it may just make things worse so have stopped using it for now.
It almost seems as if the redness comes from within the skin rather than on the surface.
I don't think its balanitis as I haven't had that for over 12 years when I was a kid and that was with the usual smegma discharge etc, whereas this is just redness.
I've attached images to show how it looks straight after showering, which is when the redness is at its worst and the contrast between the normal skin colour and the redness can be clearly seen.

Here is an update that will likely help many of you. I had a post previously where I had discovered my problem was contact dermatitis. Not everyone's symptoms are the same here, but for those of you that have the blotchy redness that looks like the original poster, then you likely have contact dermatitis. I was able to clear my problem temporarily as discussed in my original post, but after a month or so, it came back again.
I have had this issue for 2 years, and it is very frustrating. But finally, I found the original culprit, and it is my washing detergent. Seriously, it is that simple. I bought a laundry detergent that is labeled "free and clear," and literally immediately my issue disappeared. There are many brands, but the brand I got was "All Free and Clear." Buy this stuff and wash your underwear at a minimum in it. I would wash everything in it, because I was having some red itchy spots on my chest that looked different than my penis, but turns out this cleared up now too.
I believe that something else originally triggered the issue and caused my skin to become sensitive to the detergents. My problem originally started after I had a reaction to a condom, so I think something in the condom started it all up, and caused my skin to be more sensitive. But after taking every antibiotic known to man, going through countless cremes and lotions the doctors prescribed or suggested, the one thing that finally rid me of the issue was the change in laundry detergent. The previous post has suggestions that will help, but to completely clear the issue, you have to get rid of the issue that causes it, and that was washing detergents.
Make sure whatever brand you get is "free and clear" of all dyes and perfumes. Don't use the pod version, make sure you get the liquid version, as they seem to be different for whatever reason. But immediately upon washing my underwear in this detergent and using the double rinse cycle on my washer, my problem vanished. I no longer have the rash, no longer have the burning and stinging and no flare ups after any type of friction or contact as I had previously.
Hope it works for some of you as well!

Thanks for the follow up... reminds me I should do one also...
Basically, I got infected with Lyme disease and/or co-infections. In my case, it expressed as Morgellons also, but a mild case....So long story short, a bacterial infection. I did everything I could to treat it, that included rest, sun, sleep, no stress, cutting ALL sugar, eating super clean, herbals, antibiotics. Started in march after UPS with a girl in California (who by the way has ZERO symptoms etc. or that I know of)... peaked in June/July, better in fall and now pretty much back to normal... still some residual stuff but just more of a minor nuisance vs. over the summer, where the infection affected every aspect of my life. Pain, fatigue, skin inflammation and irritation etc. So about 6-8months total to get the infection under control.... so far so good. Will update in a year or two.
No more two night stands for me, this $hit changed my life, NEVER taking that chance again, protection or not, talk about a major turn off.....
sending positive vibes to everyone here! hang in there.

hi, can you remind me if you had a positive blood test for lyme? because in forums they say that lyme could be responsible for any symptom you can imagine. I once convinced myself that I have this too, but did a test and forgot it as it was negative.

I write super long and thoughtful posts about lyme disease and the mods keep deleting them. There's something really peculiar surrounding lyme disease and co-infections...it's like a taboo subject or something.... Anyway, I've learned basically all there is to know about it over the last six months... to answer your question, no blood test but I know it's lyme bacteria from all the symptoms I had, the big give away being the morgellons (which has a 95% correlation with lyme bacteria infection)....but other symptoms also that are specific and synonymous with a lyme infection.
Good news is, I'm much better now.... I probably still have some bugs circulating in my system, I can tell because if I let myself go, binge on sugar or get run down, I get a little warning down low, like rudolf the red nose raindeer, that tells me they're still there...but thankfully it's only a fraction of the irritation vs. over the summer when the infection was running it's course full out...
I do believe with proper eating, sleep and self care I will be over this 100% in good time...

For me, after a great deal of research in medical journals, I have found that Aloe Vera gel seems to work. I'm UK based and uncut, with my problems starting 2 months after a recurring yeast infection I received from unprotected sex.
My new regimen is as follows:
I do this when I wake up and an hour before bed everyday.
I've only been doing it for about 13 days so far and plan on doing it for at least 8 weeks.
So far it appears to be helping a lot, but I can't tell if it's already plateaued, and I'm not sure if as soon as I stop it'll all come back.
Either way it definitely makes things better, I just can't tell if it will cure anything for good.
Can anyone else recommend their regimens? I'm thinking I may ask a Dr for an antibacterial cream soon and try that angle in case.
Also, something that will be very interesting to people is a medical paper I found.
It's called: 'Mild Balanoposthitis' by the Department of Dermatology, University of Padua, Italy.
I would HIGHLY recommend everyone read the full paper (2 pages) as it contains every possible cause of our condition. I'm going to see a Dermatologist soon and bring the paper printed out and get a dialogue going.
I wish you all well, please keep me updated with any progress you find. I'm going to cure this thing and help you all in the process!

thanks a nice article. i was recommended Elecon and it nearly went away after 3 weeks but retuned as soon as stopped. i think Urine irritates it so it never heal properly. let's heal this thing...

Yep. Aloe vera is AMAZING, it gets deep in the layers of skin. I used to have Aloe Vera sessions and it would relieve all pain and highlight and bring out all the infected area's in red where it normally you couldn't see it, I assume because it got deep into the dermis.
Another good one that was recommended to me from a lyme forum (but good for any skin condition) is "Black african soap" specifically this stuff called Dudu-Osun... it's an age old, traditional soap made by hand in Africa consisting of a bunch of natural bacterial fighting ingredients and stuff that sooths skin. It was a game changer for me, and for many people. I'm going to be using it the rest of my life....

Seems i'm not alone with this ailment. I've been getting recurring balanitis on my glans for months now. I clean my glans every morning in the shower, let it dry before letting my foreskin back to its normal position and still it flares up. The latest was on Saturday and my glans still really red and sore. Anyone had similar that has been cured?

I saw a new dermatologist recently everyone and he presented a new possible reason. For me he thinks it's a subcutaneous fungal infection. For me it started with a yeast infection that I didn't treat properly, and then I went on to cause trauma to the skin further by continuing to have sex, driving the fungal infection deeper into the skin.
He has prescribed me 14 days of 100mg of fluconazole tablets and mometasone (steroid cream) to treat it.
I've been trying clotrimazole cream for 2 weeks to see if I could do that instead but doesn't appear to be working.
I'm gonna start fluconazole soon but wondering what other peoples thoughts are. I think we're all having problems because whatever we have is subcutaneous, making it impossible to treat properly with topicals.
I really want to avoid using fluconazole if I can but looks like I may have no choice.

oh, you bring up a great point that I probably should have touched on in one of my super long posts (that the mods always delete)....
So through out this ordeal, I constantly tested my urine. I had consistent acidic urine for months, EVERYDAY, EVERY test was 5.0.....
I took the leap and started eating an alkaline diet, mostly veggies, dips, salads, atleast trying my best.... what do you know, within about a week I started testing in the 7.0 range.... it was like a switch, that's how effective it was....and those were some of my best days for pain etc.....
if you know anything about health. Keeping your body leaning towards alkaline is #1 for good health.
highly recommended to everyone here. Cut sugar and start eating alkaline. Very easy to do and can be VERY effective. Trust me.
