Blotchy red rash/irritated skin on penile head (lasted for over 3 moths now)?

Posted , 410 users are following.

Part of the skin on the head of my penis has become slightly red and is causing some pain/irritation.

It first appeared the day after I used a condom so I think I must have had a reaction to the latex or some other substance in the condom.

The tip of the penis became super sensitive and noticeably hurt whenever it touched my underwear.

The skin was and still is noticeably red close to and directly around the meatus. This redness gets worse and bigger after I've come out the shower or masturbated.

An hour or so after ejaculation, I get a slight burn/irritation at the very end of the urethra when I urinate and this can last for a few days before subsiding. This has put me off from masturbating as much now.

This has lasted for about 3 months now with no signs of improvement.

I saw a doctor and was prescribed timodine/hydrocortisone cream and this didn't have much effect and am slightly worried it may just make things worse so have stopped using it for now.

It almost seems as if the redness comes from within the skin rather than on the surface.

I don't think its balanitis as I haven't had that for over 12 years when I was a kid and that was with the usual smegma discharge etc, whereas this is just redness.

I've attached images to show how it looks straight after showering, which is when the redness is at its worst and the contrast between the normal skin colour and the redness can be clearly seen.

I have HPV 31 high risk

    • Posted

Is there a HPV test for males?

I also feel it is due to something with the nerves in penis. My symptoms started after masturbation and i have been cleaning the penis glands with soap.

I was under the impression that there are no hpv tests that are recommended for males . is selfcollect reputable or a scam?

  • Posted

Yes. I go to selfcollect. Com

    • Posted

Do they only ship in the US? I am in Europe unfortunately. I have yet to find one for men other than selfcollect.com

FDA doesn't recommend tests because "there is nothing that can be done" for men. So we just wait until we get oral cancer. No recommendation on oral screening either.

But . . selfcollect results were same as another firm I used (privateidna). selfcollect uses the cytobush method, which is the most reliable. You should sand paper the skin to loosen it and then use the brush and insert in tube. The privateidna company uses NAAT on urine sample.

Both came up with same result: High risk (other than 16, 18). You can pay extra to selfcollect for the exact type and mine is 31 (confirmed twice).

My doctors say high-risk HPV has no effect on men except cancer so they aren't concerned about it. In fact, half of men my age (50s) have high-risk hpv

    hi everyone,

i have posted on this site before (that was approx a year ago). i saw a notification pop up in my email so thought i would jump in to offer my 2 cents now its all behind me.

i had the same symptoms as many of you. started a rash that seemed to come from no where it slowly increased in size and intensity. it would flake/peel/bleed at times and i was getting getting VERY anxious about my health and lack of ability to use it.

i tried everything, tests, creams, oils, antibiotics you name it. went to the gp, dermatologist, urologist. some things would provide temporary relief, but never sustained.

heat, sweat, friction, moisture, bad diet would all aggravate the area. however the biggest culprit was rubbing of under wear. some days i would get home and the rubbing had taken a layer if skin off!

6 months into it, no change. so i decided to try a different approach.

i kept the area dry at all times. every day, i would use a soft small bandage and wrap it around my penis and tie it off (weird i know, but it prevented 100% of rubbing) i stopped taking all medication and i at a gluten and dairy free diet with very low sugar intake. also no using the penis other than for peeing.

after a few weeks i started to notice a difference (as i wasn't causing if to flare up). each week it got better and after about 3 months it was pretty clear. so i started 'use it' again.

now 12 months on from that point i have had no further issues.

only 6 weeks ago did i find out my partner has hpv (from a test she had) and that was likely the cause of it all.

my father always says "your body is a chemistry set and will balance out any issues, you just need to be patient and give it good food". he is in no way a medical professional but it makes sense.

anyway, im sure youre all looking for the correct medication or cream to fix it instantly (as i was) however things dont always work like that.

be patient and whatever you do, dont let it f**k with your head and disrupt other areas of your life. you'll heal for sure.

This is a very interesting approach. So, please disregard if this question offends you but are you uncircumcised ?

I ask because I am uncircumcised and I have been dealing with this condition for almost 2 years now, in various degrees. In my case, keeping it dry just seems to make the skin dry, slightly swollen and painful. When I moisturize it. it almost appears normal (especially in the AM hours).

Unfortunately, I can't abstain from sex or masterbation (e.g. rubbing it) because doing so actually caused a one-time occurrence of blood in my semen back when this all began. That resulted in a whole round of other prostate tests, blood tests and scans that came back negative but were all very unenjoyable to say the least.

However, I haven't let the skin go past three or four days at a time before I'm back to moisturizing it to stop the discomfort. Maybe I'll try your approach of not putting anything on it for a a few weeks prior to my derm appt and see what happens... that thought never occurred to me. If anything it should make it look more serious to my derm and convince her it needs to be taken more seriously!

Does anyone have the tip as red as I do? imageimage

    • Posted

Initially, yes. my glans area (tip) and particularly the crown area of my meatus was close to that in appearance. Now, it is less red, more pinkish/ purple and it seems to be deeper into the skin ( like it is in the dermis layer). Whereas your issue appears to be primarily confined to the epidermis layer.

How long have you had the condition? I am going on almost two years.

The first pic is when it is left alone (not moisterized) for almost three days. The second pic is when it is moisturized daily with Chaga oil. Both pics were taken in the AM hours.

Mine has been like this 6 months.

Your glans looks healthier. Uncircumcised? It's amazing how much pinker intact penises are then cut up penis.

    • Posted

does chaga oil help? I can only see one uploaded picture so can't see how much the chaga oil helped you, if it helped you I will get some as well.

    • Posted

In my case, yes, mainly for the dryness and redness that has persisted. It seems to make the glans appear virtually normal with daily use. I am down to only using it once a day (at night after I shower). I have no idea if it will help a very red/ irritated and painful patch, I got rid of that initially with a product called Suragel over a year ago. However, I ended up with the severe dry skin and discoloration because I used it for much longer than I probably should have (6 months).

Here is the difference side by side that Chaga Oil makes for my current issue.

      image

I mean, when I moisturise mine with Cetraban emollient mine looks basically normal as well. It's about when I DON'T moisturise it that matters. Are you worried that Chaga Oil has plateaued in its usefulness?

I'm finding success with a completely no refined sugar vegan diet full of good vegetables and lots of exercise and sun. Seems to be getting better everyday, and I don't put anything on mine anymore, I also pull back the foreskin when I sleep to aerate it.

Glad to hear this, it's basically what I've been preaching....diet change is difficult at first but after a while it's just second nature and it makes a MASSIVE difference in overall health. Go figure...lol.

Especially vegetables for skin. There was a young dude on the show "the doctors", had a serious cystic acne issue, he started dosing up on vegetables and now has perfect blemish free skin! Celery is supposed to be especially good for skin.

PS, for those not too into raw veggies, add some dip or salad dressing....

Plus exercise or anything to get the heart rate up and get the blood flowing to all the extremities and capillaries... get those antibodies in there. And exercise while on ABX increases their effectiveness x 13 !

Look, I get that all the natural path gurus and holistic yogis like to preach that vegan and plant based diets cure everything but at least in my case they made me sicker.

I have had a complete diet change after a serious bout with SIBO (C & D) a year ago. However, being on a strict Vegan and Candidia restrictive diet prior to that diagnosis almost killed me. In my case, we found that it was a sulfur overload, too many probiotics/ supplements and high FODmap foods like cruciferous vegetables that created my issue. My strict dieting did nothing but feed the bacteria more and make all my skin issues and overall health worse. Raw vegetables would essentially kill me. literally. I hate that because I was a pescatarian most of my life until I got sick.

Gut flora do play into it but I would argue that it has more to do with an imbalance than with anything else. As an example If you are the type of person who could always digest dairy and gluten fine but then you can't... you've got an imbalance going on in your digestive system, period.

Whether switching to a plant based herbal diet works or a good dose of gut specific antibiotics (which worked well for me) is up to you and your doctor to figure out.

Each of us are different and one thing this entire thread is proving time and time again is there is no magic pill or ointment. However, that doesn't take away from the benefit of all of us talking and working through our similar issue together.

    • Posted

No, because when I stop it and switch to trying every other "solution" I read on here (SMOXL, Dermol500, nothing, etc) a Chaga oil regimen for a few days gets it back to "almost" cured.

However, you are on to something regards to sun exposure... I found recently that I have a pretty severe Vitamin D deficiency and a combo of supplementation and more Sun exposure in limited quantities has helped me overall. Vitamin D is critical for your immune system to work. The other thing that has helped both my digestion (and weirdly also my skin issues) is physical therapy focus on my Ileocecal valve and psoas muscles.

"being on a strict Vegan and Candidia restrictive diet prior to that diagnosis almost killed me"...

"we found that it was a sulfur overload, too many probiotics/ supplements and high FODmap foods like cruciferous vegetables that created my issue. "

Dude ofcourse, you went to an extreme, you fell into the vegan cult. Anything in extreme is obviously not good... but an overall vegetable diet, with some fruits, nuts/seeds AND meat (chicken, fish, red meat to a min) very low sugar..... does nothing but good for your health, that it backed up scientifically, zero argument against it.....

The example I gave about the guy with acne, well, heavy veggies consumption worked for him so that's great, but he never mentioned what else he ate so who knows.... I think the point was he saw how eating vegetables on a regular basis helped his skin condition a lot.... so he focused on that, he might have been eating other things but the majority was vegetables.

It adds up over time, anyone who tells you that you have to eat a strict diet of this or that, is full of it... it's about habits and focus... you can eat a big mac now and then, it's not going to kill you....I wouldn't do it everyday though for an extended period of time, you will see the results first hand.

The whole point is about balance really and getting into an alkaline state and regular vegetable consumption is great for that........Sadly, we have food habits these days that don't general fall into that category......

      70%veggies 20%fruits 10% nuts/seeds/meets. $hit food once or twice a week at the most.

that's where I'm at with diet. Leaving allergies and sensitivities aside, can't go wrong with that.

      Ah okay then, gotcha.

And yes vitamin D3 is insanely important to immune function, up there with zinc. Definitely get your blood levels up to around 50 ng/mol as soon as you can, you can supplement up to around 7,000 IUs per day safely until you need to take Vitamin K2 MK7 with it, but do it under supervision from a doctor of course. Look at the vitamin d council site for more information on this.

And it would absolutely make sense that your skin issues would get better if you fixed up your digestion! All skin issues start in the gut, so if you're finding you're digesting better, then that means getting more vitamins in your body, your stomach acid is better at killing pathogens and thus rebalancing your gutflora, and MAYBE if there's some leaky gut going on, then you're getting less histamines/bacteria etc leaking into your blood stream.

I genuinely think that everyone who has a fungal infection here has very simply got gut issues. The HPV crew have a whole different problem, but the fungal crew I am 100% sure have a gut issue. I think we have problems such as SIBO/SIFO (Small Intestinal Bacterial/Fungal Overgrowth) and/or Leaky Gut that needs to be diagnosed and treated asap.

Which is why the more we support our immune system/gut health/mental health, the closer we'll come to curing this for good.

The annoying thing for us is that I believe we were already predisposed to getting a fungal infection long before we actually caught it, the environment was there to allow a fungal infection to thrive, all it needed was the catalyst of an initial injection of candida, or the killing off of skin bacteria to allow fungus to overgrow.

Things such as stress, high sugar diets, sedentary lifestyles, vitamin deficiencies, lack of sleep, lack of sun, etc etc have put our bodies out of whack. Our bodies are big chemistry sets that are built to fight off pesky fungal infections like this, it's only when we aren't giving our bodies what they want that things like this become chronic. Chronic infections like this are ALWAYS due to a poor lifestyle of some kind, for me it was stress that messed up my digestion and an initial yeast infection from a partner that created the perfect storm. When it comes down to it, this has been a huge wake up call for me in my life. My body showed me that I wasn't living life correctly. It has pushed me to get my life together in so many other ways, because I know that once I have rebalanced my life again, this problem will go.

Of course, I'm not saying that medical intervention isn't necessary, it can definitely be, but for me it hasn't helped so far unfortunately, which is why I'm forced to go this route.

Thus I have started getting as much sun exposure as I can, supplementing what I lack, exercising regularly, seeing friends often, eating no refined sugar, eating 98% whole foods only, and going to counselling to sort out past emotional trauma, amongst many other endeavours.

When it comes down to it, this problem is your body telling you that something beyond this skin condition is wrong. Listen to your body and don't be afraid to dig deep into your subconscious to figure out where your imbalances may lie. For me the source of my stress started from a traumatic situation with a crazy flatmate which hugely affected my digestion, which thus has ultimately led me to here today. As I have begun to accept what happened and process/reframe the past, my digestion has improved, and subsequently everything in my life has improved, including my genital skin issue.

The body is just a big chemistry set which needs to be rebalanced, rebalance it!

Sorry for the massive rant I don't know where this came from hah.

Basically what I'm trying to say is I'm totally going to try that physical therapy for psoas and Ileocecal valve! Thank you for the tip, jtheige 😃

You may not understand SIBO, its impact on digestion or that not everyone's digestion and body work the same.

As a point of clarification, I wasn't on any extreme diet at all. I have been a pescatarian for almost 20 years (although I would occasionally eat poultry and Red meat). I was a practicing pescatarian from a health perspective primarily so I didn't restrict myself so much as just gravitate to that lifestyle out of personal preference.

Moreover, I was the perfect example of health and never went to the doctor simply because I didn't sick. The diet I was on was a bit restrictive but it was only for about three weeks, under supervision of a board certified internist and gastroenterologist. When I say we, I am referring to me and my doctor. We were troubleshooting a few things at the time and the diet and supplements were part of that... including several medical grade probiotics.

However, one thing happened at the same time that changed everything for me... I hit 40! Passing 40 introduced many changes to my health overall, including causing a slow down in my digestion. My slow transit problem is largely what contributes to not being able to eat the way you're recommending.

This is what works for me and the plan I have formulated with the feedback of my doctors, not from Google.

      Interesting.

Well #1. Glad you found something that worked for you. But for sure, things always need to be tailored to the person. Especially when there are allergies, sensitivities and genetics are involved. You're basically describing a sensitivity to the digestion of plant based fiber it sounds like....so obviously over consumption of vegetables is probably not the best for you....

i totally agree with your rant mate in fact i posted a similar thing on here over a year ago. ive given up posting now, it is apparent to me that alot of the guys here have selective vision and ignore posts that i guess mean too much hard work ie a lifestyle change. they are all searching for a magic pill or cream but its just not that simple. i was hospitalized with crohn's after an incredibly stressful period of my life and have been working to return myself physically and mentally to good health. my mysterious skin problem down there is a reflection of the state of my body inside. penis skin is one of the most sensitive on the body and therefore one of the first to get issues with. keep on doing what your doing, as will i. i am not cured but see improvements as i get stronger. i still have a way to go with my insides but i feel confident when i get there my old boy with follow suit. the infos out there guys but if youve tried every cream and potion then its time to start thinking inside.!!

Amen to that. No magic pill.

Yep, aside from genetic predispositions and some more serious bacterial/viral/fungal infections. If you're coming up negative on STD tests and you and your doctor just can't figure it out...... that's a clue to an overall lifestyle/diet/spiritual imbalance. Stop worrying about trying to find some magic pill and get your life in order. You're going to need to put some work into it. For anyone interested, I did a really long post a few pages back highlighting all the things I did during the healing phase in order of my perceived effectiveness. It's all encompassing. And accumulates over time. A year later, here I am, my boys are all healed up, NEVER did I think I'd be here, looking down at a normal shlong again...(some slight scaring but eh, I'm not a porn star so what evs.) Overall, still not 100% but getting there. Takes time and focus on mind/body/spirit.

@ harry, vit D is SUPER crucial for sure. It's why flu rates drop in summer months. I try to get it from the sun though. It's the most easily absorbed. Need to be really careful with high dose vit D supplements, espeically if combining with Vit C and calcium....that's a recipe for kidney stones. Typically all you should need is a good mens vitamen and get the rest of your vitamens from veggies and fruits, nuts and seeds... like God intended...

Are you able to have sex or is it too painful? I can't believe I will never make love to my wife again without pain. 😦

    • Posted

You'll be fine, it'll just take time and effort to heal it properly. Don't obsess over the condition but do take it seriously. See a dermatologist as soon as you can and take/apply anything they suggest. If that fails come back here and read all the posts and look into seeing a functional medicine doctor, they'll treat you holistically and help you find what your body is lacking and put you right. Look at your skin as a reflection of your whole body, and know that helping one seemingly separate part of the body (i.e. your fitness/sun exposure) will help your skin too. It's all connected.

Sorry to hear about this. Really feel for you man. Sending positive vibes.....

Nah. So far I'm all good down there now, I'm able to perform but quite frankly this whole incident has really traumatized me.

My libido has really taken a hit, right now no longer really interested in shagging.... I just know this was meant to happen, to smack some sense into me on the dangers/perils of sex. It's an amazing thing but you really need to be careful......I'm sure I'll get back out there, but it's going to take time....and I don't plan on doing anything until it's a super committed relationship.

BTW, I'm still dealing with some issues, it seems to have moved to the back of my hand now lol...... seems like the same sort of symptoms albiet much milder....so I'm just dealing with it best I can, hopefully will go away completely one day.... overall I'm WAY better though. And as terrible as it is to say this. I'll take a rash/sore/wound or infection ..........ANYWHERE but my junk. I know your pain man. Sending positive vibes to all the dudes on here. Being able to share tips/tricks/emotions etc. during these rough times is VERY IMPORTANT......

Just to chime in, I was in that boat a few years ago so I too feel for you. That is a really hard situation on you psychologically as well as it is likely a strain on your relationship (it surely was both things for me).

What helped me was when I found (what I thought was a) gimmicky product called Surgel. A week of use drastically reduced the inflammation and pain. By week two, the pain was completely gone. However, I used it far too long that I think it eventually caused or helped to cause the dry skin issue I battle with now.

I can still see the area originally affected if I don't moisturize daily with Chaga oil but that is more psychological than a hindrance.

Maybe Suragel would help you. just don't use it past two or three weeks.

I had a biopsy of that red bump to the left of the meatus. I find out the results on Tuesday (5 days). A biopsy taken on underside of glans resulted in non-specific changes but one person saying contact dermatitis, the other genital psoriasis.

I will let you all know what the biopsy shows.

IS your meatus sensitive? The bump to the left of my meatus is very tender. Mastubation is ok but intercourse pushes that bump back and I end up bruised looking. 😦
