Brain fog, dizziness, vision problems, head pressure, headache PLEASE HELP

Hi everyone!

I don't know where else to go, and was hoping someone could please help me. I'll start off by saying I'm a 23 year old Caucasian female. Going on 5 months now, I have had absolutely debilitating symptoms which have hindered my daily life. I feel these symptoms every moment of every day.

It started with dizziness and a persistent brain fog. I just thought I had a bug, and tried to go on about my life. However, my symptoms have never gone away. This "brain fog" I am talking about is a feeling of complete mental confusion, I have no memory, I cannot concentrate on anything, it feels like there's a dark blanket on my brain clouding all my thoughts. I have extreme disorientation and haziness. I feel like I'm always in a dream like state.

I am constantly dizzy and feel a pulling sensation, as if I'm ready to fall over at any moment. It feels like there's air inside my head, and I'm always very lightheaded. Whenever I try to drive I feel this pulling sensation pulling me down.

Another problem I have is with my vision. I am having very blurred vision and have double vision. Everytime I look at something up close it is extremely blurry and I cannot see at all. My perception on things has completely changed. I feel like everything looks very odd and strange and I don't have the right depth perception. It's like I'm in a horrible dream like state all the time.

I have been having headaches and head pressure as well, and having horrible pains behind my eyes. The pin starts from the back of my head close to my neck and continues up my head and the sides of my temples. My eyes hurt so bad, and it feels like knives are jabbing my eyes. My head also feels extremely heavy all the time.

All these symptoms have been causing me severe anxiety, and I have been having panic attacks from them and feel like I'm dying. It is causing a strange disrespity sensation, where I feel like I'm not even here anymore and there's a detachment from myself and my body. I have had to drop all my classes at college and quit my job because these symptoms make me lay in bed all day long. I have been unable to drive for months and can barely get up to walk around. If anyone could please help me or know anything as a suggestion to try.

I have been to my general doctor, 2 ENTs, 1 neurologist, have had 2 MRIs, a hearing test, VNG, multiple blood tests, and no one knows what is wrong. I can't live like this anymore. Any help is greatly appreciated.

-Elise

I'm not positive but it does sound like intracranial hypertension for some of you. its also known as pseudotumor cerebri. they can only test it by your spinal fluid.

I went to ENT and did MRI but it was normal. Only saw my cyst. I want them to remove it. I'm now found out I have H pylori. My stomach is bloating, cramp that come and go. Pressure my stomach and pain after used restroom. I have constipation. My back is burning pain. People who have the same issues. have another issues like that. I never listen to my body. I will have neurology this thursday. I hope you feel better.

ask the neurologist about abdominal migraines.........

Yes. I will ask them about it. Since people report h pylori cause brain fog, dizzy, panic,

blurry vision, buzzing in ear not feel themself. They also report cyst cause headache, dizzy spell, blurry vision and another issues. So I'm nervous what they will say. I wish They can do something for me and see a nice doctor.

    Hi Elise93

your symptoms sound very much like mine. I've only had this for 5 weeks now so feel for you having had it that long. I'm not yet at the point where I'm having to give up work but don't think it'll be long. my symptoms have never disappeared and never eased. The only time I get respite is when I lay down. it's definitely starting to affect my mental state. I feel as though this is changing my personality, I'm no longer the bubbly person I used to be. I've had blood tests and an ECG and my doctor can't find anything wrong. I was about to be referred to an ENT specialist but that's now on a back burner because of the corona virus. all future appointments are cancelled until God knows when. they prescribed me Betahistine tablets but they made absolutely no difference. I literally feel like I'm no longer in my own body if that makes sense, just very detached. my doctors attitude seemed to be that there is nothing wrong so therefore just continue with taking the tablets (which aren't working). it's quite lonely living with this and just glad I found this forum as until you have it you don't realise how debilitating it is. did your doctor prescribe any medication??

those of us with this variety of symptoms are truly overwhelmed when they seem to linger without some known "cause" .I've put out a lot of information recently regarding a "newer" understanding of VESTIBULAR MIGRAINES which many ENT are learning more about thru the Migraine summit meetings. For the majority of people it was once believed these strange symptoms stemmed from the inner ear....now increased knowledge of these Alice in wonderland syndrome things that don't seem to have a visible cause such as tumor or other diagnosed .actually stem from the brain you can research this very informative ... I can validate with all of you no bizarre symptom is to be disregarded, or treated as non existent we all are "triggered" by barometric pressure; food sensitivities, anxiety which increases more symptoms as well as a full moon. These symptoms can improve by going on "vestibular rehab exercises which will help support that delicate balance

try going gluten and dairy free and supplement Vitamin b12 and calcium , alao try to get enough sleep before midnight and drink plenty of water .. that made a big difference for me... migraines headaches are gone completely, just a bit brain fog left here and there when I don't get enough sleep before midnight..

    Hi Elise,

Can I ask if you get relief from any of those symptoms when laying down?

I recently went through a CSF leak, where spinal fluid leaks out of the dura mater around your spinal cord. It happened when I feel on my hip, wasnt even a bad fall just unlucky.

I was getting pretty much all your symptoms and a chronic headache and tugging feeling in the back of my head down my neck, basically my brain sagging from the low spinal fluid.

It is really challenging to get checked but if you can find a doctor that takes you seriously then I would consider asking. Because its very rare, doctors tend to brush it off.

Anyway, If you get relief form headaches and pain when lying down, or slightly inverted I would seriously consider investigating.

    Good luck!

    Simon

We all see the complexity of symptoms which are different and yet similar.....there is much more understanding than before due to the Migraine summit meeting, and several Neurologists Ent. field seeing more of us. The strange phenomena of migraine does have huge relativity to Anxiety and panic, because the fear of strange symptoms that that co exist, it is an inflammation problem too, and all these strange feelings, are like a "brain storm" with differing triggers. The feelings of unreality are so common, and part of the anxiety with "co-morbidity" of several things happening at once. There is a lovely support on line "The dizzy cook" who describes her symptoms and found food groups are sometimes the triggers, as is "flying" which as in my case, exacerbated the symptoms. There are quite a few discussions of "depersonilization or feelings of unreality on Utube describing these sensations. For me prescription "lorazepam was a god send to help with the anxiety. There is a belief that Nortriptylin 10mg. is useful for this condition. Some other antidepressants are recommended but you have to be patient for them to build for a few weeks. The benzo class of medications are very useful for those with anxiety, and the feelings of unreality. I was told to search for my triggers, which were salt weather, Santa Anna's chocolate caffeine again the dizzy cook shows foods we tend to want to avoid.

I started to have these symptoms almost 5 years ago following a night of heavy drinking. I was always a heavy binge drinker but i guess this night was the straw that broke the camel's back. I blacked out on the train and I had been sleeping in a very uncomfortable position (neck) for a prolonged period of time so it is one of the many possible reasons for this problem. When i finally woke up my vision was impaired and my fingers/toes were tingling. This was not an ordinary hangover.

Decided to quit drinking from that point on but all these mysterious symptoms started to occur which set my anxiety through the roof ( note: a reaction to but not the cause of these symptoms). I saw many neuros and doctors and eventually turned to alternative medicine because modern medicine had no answers for me (I actually am a healthcare professional myself so you can imagine my disappointment).

I'm noticing a lot of people start to experience these symptoms immediately after some physically stressful event (e.g drinking, heavy physical exertion, post-surgery, pregnancy/labor). To me it seems our bodies were pushed to the limit which caused our immune system or something else to go haywire. Essentially we are off balance in some way.

symptoms: Brain fog, head pressure, tinnitus (resolved), feeling of fullness in ears, migrating pain in lymph nodes of groin , navel , armpits (resolved), cough, mucus drip , shortness of breath, fatigue, weakness in arms/legs/behind the eyes, facial tingling, formication (feeling of bugs crawling under skin (resolved), heartburn, pain in neck and head ...did i miss anything ? Probably.

I have a pain specifically in what is called the greater auricular nerve (please google location) right around where the ear and jaw meet ... predominantly on the left side of my neck but sometimes on the right side as well. I am curious to know if anyone else has this pain. I have heard it described as a twinge or others have referred to it as a guitar string like sensation. Initially thought it was my lymph nodes(hence my name) and of course the thought of cancer crossed my mind but later realized it isn't likely because it probably would have grown in size by now.

Another possible theory i have is this is actually an internal problem related to the gut (google gut-brain axis), gallbladder or liver. Along with these neurologic symptoms i also started to experience many digestive issues at the same time which leads me to believe they may be connected. I tried dietary changes (e.g gluten free, vegetarian, etc) but had no significant improvement. Many acupuncturists have confirmed that the location of my pain points to a gallbladder issue. Liver problems can also cause a lot of neurologic issues such as hepatic encephalopathy. It is a reasonable suspicion due to my prior drinking habits. I'm just throwing theories out there and would like others to share as much of their experience as possible. Ideally i hope we can connect the dots and solve this thing together. Most importantly don't lose hope and if there is any time to turn to God .. no better time than now.

Thanks for sharing your experience. I feel with each post like this we get more insight. My case wasn't with drinking but was exacerbated after a case of lyme disease and burntout from work (working 60+ hours for 3 months). Ever since I've never been the same. I have many of your symptoms but the one that stands out the most is the pain you mention. I also have a dull pain you could describe like someone is pulling on the nerve like a guitar string. It's on the left side and goes up my neck and centers on my jaw. It also goes behind my left eye which made me think it was trigeminal neuralgia. I take meds for trigeminal and it helps but the pain has gotten worse over the years and affected my vision and hearing as well as taste and sense of smell. That fullness in my left ear is also present. I've seen every specialist you can think of that would be relevant (neurologists, oral surgeons, ents and even a neuro ophthalmologist). I've also done alternative therapies. I've been dealing with this for a decade now so I've tried just about everything and after awhile you start to feel helpless and just accept it as the norm.

I do have gut brain issues too with most food and drinks. I assume this is because of the heavy rounds of antibiotics I took for the lyme (2 months). I've been able to restore some of my gut flora through probiotics and other supplements. I would recommend trying a water fast for a day or two and then transition into a keto diet. When I fast or do keto I almost feel normal again. It seems carbs cause some kind of inflammation response in me.

I'm also not giving up. I'm 35 and don't want to live my life like this. It's made it very difficult to live a normal life and I've basically put my career on hold and do menial jobs (ubereats) to make ends meet now since my cognition isn't what it used to be. I also went into debt trying to figure this out so I do what I can but I'm mostly just managing symptoms now. Obviously sleep, exercise, and diet is important and helps a lot. Vitamin D is always good. Practicing mindfulness and meditation. There are a lot of things you can do to make life less hellish. Pain isn't optional but suffering is. Like they keep saying during the quarantine, we're all in this together! Let's continue supporting each other and try not to get overwhelmed.

      Hey Mark,

Do your symptoms, especially the headache get better when you lay flat on the bed?
