Breath smells like faeces (Poo)
Posted , 379 users are following.
I have this horrid poo smell from my mouth. I brush my teeth twice a day, floss, use Dentyl PH mouthwash, I have the best oral hygeine of anyone I know but I still have this smell. I am too embarrassed to even ask my flriends or family to tell me my breath stinks. I am becoming totally reclusive because of it. Id rather go to my GP and tell him ive got an STD. I know ive got it coz sometimes people look around and ask if ive farted, and I see people with babies smelling their nappies when I speak. It really is starting to badly affect my life but I just cant pluck up the courage ot go to my GP. How on earht can i ay \"DR, My breath smells like poo!\" Please, if anyone has any tips let me know.

Hello all,
Wendy, PaulSmall. I will try to make this short but best if private message me. as things get moderated.
Check w a great GI,
I had tonsils removed - I think Wendy mentioned this made it worse. I agree.
I've reduced my stress but I was always busy at doctors or work.
In my case it is how food is breaking down.
I've spent money on tons of things.
best thing is continue with a great doctor that will perform the proper tests.
At times, peoples reactions and MY OWN smelling it turns me off!! I keep reminding myself that there is a scientific reason to find out & we should not give up.
Yes, what you eat is A factor but other things are involved...
Hope to hear from some bc I posting much will get...

Chris,
My gut instinct, no pun intended, is that you are in the right area i.e. Stomach / intestines and the passage of food.
I personally have a very small appetite and will get indigestion if I eat even a relatively modest amount, or eat late in the day. This can also cause acid indigestion. A visit to a GI will be my next step at some point. Of course, I will report back on where that takes me.
The only other thing that I consider a possibility is that when I was a teenager, I stupidly drank water from a polluted river and I wonder if somehow a bug got in that way. I remember it made me very ill at the time and I also had really smelly burps afterwards. Some of these bugs can stay in your system a lifetime, but I have been checked for H.pylori and it was negative - camera inserted into my throat.
I do get a bit of an unpleasant taste from mucus at times, this doesn't necessarily translate into bad breath and even if it did, I am not convinced that it would be enough to cause the level of smell that we are discussing here. As usual though, it's all guesswork. :-/

Hello Paulsmall,
I know for me it is gastro things. I also have a small hiatus hernia. but I don't this really takes a toll..
I follow up with my gastro soon. I will update.
are you from U.S.?
WE should all have a support group started because we are not the only ones that have this public issue....
if people are comfortable with stating where they are from...

Chris,
Not yet, reason being that i have recently had another, more pressing, health issue to deal with. That's hopefully out of the way now and so i guess this will come back to the fore when i next get 'the comment'.
What I am trying in the meantime is to drink much more water with food and also focus on gargling with mouthwash at the back of the throat, around the tonsils area. Whether it is doing any good, is anybody's guess!
I will sort this at some point and as I mentioned previously, I will let you know how I get on.

When you have Halitosis that smells like feces one of the main causes is trapped gas or people holding in gas and it gets into the blood stream which will cause your breath to smell like feces. That is why brushing, flossing and using mouth wash multiple times a day doesn't help. It is because the gas gets into your blood stream and even the best oral hygiene can't prevent the smell from occurring when it's in your blood.

I have been researching a lot about this. I read somewhere that cayenne pepper helps the gastrointestinal system run more smoothly and helps with flushing toxins, inflammation, and even cellulite. I have bought it in pill form and seem to notice my gastrointestinal system has had a positive effect from the pills along with constant hydration. It's worth a shot to see if it may subside the halitosis smells. It's worth a shot.

This happened to someone I know. It ended up being that all they needed was deep cleaning and scaling. If this is happening to you it means you have tarter build up underneath your gums in areas you can't reach. If it's a severe case the dentist might suggest a laser gum treatment. For non severe they would just numb the areas affected and do deep cleaning with scaling. A friend of mine did it and she says now even when she flosses there's no awful smell that comes along with it. That poo smell is also gone. Make sure you go to a dentist who specializes in gums because sometimes your regular dentist might disregard this and just do a regular cleaning leaving behind a lot of tarter on your teeth and underneath your gums. It usually takes an hour or so to do so it costs more. Hope this helps

I have had such treatments and, coincidentally, was at the Periodontist yesterday.
I don't think you would get this kind of treatment on the NHS, which may explain a Dentist's apathy towards it. Having said that, my Private dentist put me forward for it. Of course it is not cheap but then we are talking about one's health. Unfortunately, whilst this may be the underlying cause of your friend's problems, it hasn't sorted mine!
I think we determined quite early on in this thread that there is not just one cause and one solution that fits all. Any suggestion that there is, takes people off at a tangent that probably, ultimately leads to further heartbreak and unnecessary expense.I have mentioned before that it is easy for a dentist to determine whether you need to see a periodontist. They can measure the gap between the tooth and the gum, which is essentially what you are referring to.
Of course, focus on dental hygiene is a starting point for anybody who thinks that they may have bad breath. It is not the be all and end all though.

We should all state where we are from, if comfortable. It's still a public issue for me and we are not alone!!
