Breath smells like faeces (Poo)
Posted , 379 users are following.
I have this horrid poo smell from my mouth. I brush my teeth twice a day, floss, use Dentyl PH mouthwash, I have the best oral hygeine of anyone I know but I still have this smell. I am too embarrassed to even ask my flriends or family to tell me my breath stinks. I am becoming totally reclusive because of it. Id rather go to my GP and tell him ive got an STD. I know ive got it coz sometimes people look around and ask if ive farted, and I see people with babies smelling their nappies when I speak. It really is starting to badly affect my life but I just cant pluck up the courage ot go to my GP. How on earht can i ay \"DR, My breath smells like poo!\" Please, if anyone has any tips let me know.

So guys, I've been to the doctor this morning about my tonsil stones.
When I gave the back story of how this has affected me since I was 14 and mentioned the stones she actually used the words tonsilloliths and tonsil stones. This amazed me as like candida, doctors don't generally acknowledge them or take them seriously. She said my tonsils didn't look particularly bad but I explained that I regularly push on them to take out the stones from the top. The Dr said sometimes they remove the tonsil stones for patients if the stones are really big. She said she was going to have a chat with another Doctor in the practice that specialised in ENT so she is going to contact me later.
Lets see what she comes back with. On another note, I've been eating a lot of natural greek yoghurt (zero fat) with natural live bacteria and straight after I noticed my mouth tasted neutral. I asked my (very honest) daughter if she could smell my breath. She said she smelt nothing - it smelt normal! Its not often (if ever) I hear that.
Will keep you posted on doctors response.

calcium bumps that grow they look like tumors and obstruct the saliva from mositurizing the mouth which can also cause the BB.

I believe doctors blame it on oral hygiene as an easy way out.
I also believe there will be many of us out there who do not want to go seek advice hence why there is not so much research curing this issue.
It may also be due to a variety of different factors which make it hard to under pin.
I have been eating 0% Greek yogurt and found it to be making it slightly worse? any tips at all as some probiotic yogurts have lots of sugar which is counter productive in relation to Candida

I agree, both dentists and doctors fob us off. Its a cosmetic problem to them so they just dismiss it.

Sometimes my breath is really bad and smells like death and sometimes I don't smell it at all. I don't know if I'm getting used to it or what. I don't want to get used to it - I made an appointment at the doctor's office today. It's been 2 weeks with this smell that started between 2 teeth when I flossed and now has moved to my throat or maybe something deeper. I don't know what it is. The dentist wasn't concerned with it so that was a waste of time.

Sometimes I smell the bad smell when my lips are closed and I'm just breathing deeply through my nose. Or if I clear my throat... so it's not in my teeth anymore.
Update: My doctor thinks it may be related to acid reflux because 1) my dentist said that my teeth show a wearing of the enamel that is consistent with GERD. 2) I have one of the acid reflux symptoms - a feeling like when I swallow food and drink is still going down. So I'm trying out a diet change to see if there's any improvement. AND my doctor referred me to an Ear, Nose, and Throat doctor to check if the smell is coming from something stuck rotting in my throat or sinuses.

I read somewhere that alcohol makes the breath even worse so I switched to using warm water, salt and baking soda for mouthwash. I don't usually use mouthwash - I just wanted to do it for this problem. Do you have a sinus issue? Or a post nasal drip issue? I do and I've always been prone to sinus infections and Post nasal drip.

Update! I have been referred to an ENT and clinic on 8th March. I now believe that my bb is caused by overactive yeast in my gut which then affects all areas of my body including my mouth. I definitely have tonsil stones. My doctor pointed out that my tonsils weren't bulging with stones. I said no they aren't but they are there, you can see them.
Will be interested to see what the ENT Doctor says and how seriously he takes tonsil stones!

Hi JJJ
Im glad to hear this as I had my tonsils removed and it didn't get rid of the BB. In fact I feel it's worse now. Almost like the tonsils were maybe blocking some of the smell from getting out.
No point going through the operation if it's not going to help. It's quite a painful recovery.
Keep us posted.

Hi
I did put an update on but for some reason my posts get deleted and I'm not even mentioning products! Ridiculous! Anyway, ENT doctor said that he would be happy to remove my tonsils BUT he insists my BB is not coming from the tonsils. He said that the only time my breath would smell from the tonsils would be if the tonsil stone was poking out or was in my mouth. The other tonsil stones can't smell if they are hidden in the tonsils.
He put a camera up my nostrils and down my throat and all looks fine. I asked him about candida (which a lot of doctors don't accept) and he agreed it does exist and can work its way up from the gut and to avoid dairy and drink lots of water throughout the day particularly when I've eaten.
I am going to go back to avoiding sugar and some dairy and instead of just doing it for 3 weeks, do it long term. I think my problem is a yeast problem. He also said that some people are predisposed to bad breath.
Well I might be one of those people but I am going to do all I can to prevent it. Hope this helps.

I know this is old but having teeth cleaned regularly (not suggesting you do no) . Peppermint drops in water along with a drop of your favorite mouthwash. Absolutely no dairy try plant based milk, yogurt, milk, cheese, no cake or anything with cream, eggs, butter, or milk. Not even a taste brush after each meal.and keep mints breathsavers and gum " 5". Will keep brearh minimal.

Hi,
Thanks for the response. It is so annoying how this is a medical anomaly.
Medical professions just don't know what is causing it if the obvious reasons aren't.
Have you thought about going to a gastro see what they say?

Yeah, I get that too - I can sometimes smell it from my throat? or stomach. I went to the ENT and she said that it's not a sinus issue. She thought it was a periodontal issue. But my dentist said it isn't! That makes me angry - because it's the most obvious answer. I hate my dentist and why doesn't she recommend me to see a periodontist.
Meanwhile - the GI that I went to said my symptoms don't fit neatly into any category. She is sending me to get a Barium Swallow test to check if maybe the problem is that the food gets stuck in the esophagus and the rotting smell is coming from there.
But I think the most promising thing I found was to use oral probiotics - the smell definitely lessened. And I read about the bacteria that cause bad breath because even though the smell I have isn't a normal bad breath situation, the article got me wondering if it is the same as regular bad breath. If maybe there's an imbalance in the bad/good bacteria - and the oral probiotic will skew it more into balance.
