Last week had my X-ray as still very sore after 9 months and achy, saw GP and booked for physio today she says it's bursitis and continue exercise and ice.  Results of X-ray after Easter.  Hope this will get sorted.  Has anyone else had it or got if so how does it come about bit fed up to be honest.. If this does not clear then what happens?  How long will it take?..no idea.

There is a very informative pamphlet right here on Patient called "Greater Trochanteric Pain Syndrome", which used to be called Trochanteric Bursitis. If you copy what I have in quotes above and put it into the search bar towards the top of this page, you will find it easily. I highly recommend it. I'm afraid if I put in the link, my reply will be delayed.

In a nutshell, the site says that "The main symptom is pain over the outside of your upper thigh. Most cases are due to minor injury or inflammation to tissues in your upper, outer thigh area. Commonly the condition goes away on its own over time."

It is always possible that the muscle tears or inflammation may be too serious to heal on their own, and that is what happened to me. I hope you will check out the pamphlet.

So glad you found it, and I'm hoping it may be useful to you!

My situation ended up being more extensive than GTPS, although that was the first thing I considered. I have torn gluteus medius and minimus  tendons/muscles, seen on MRI. I had to go to a different orthopedic surgeon to get this diagnosis, as my original surgeon had no idea how to help me. I will be having surgery soon to repair them. I'm still having appointments with my new orthopedic surgeons (two of them in the same practice!) to determine the best way to handle my situation. It's been 8 months since my surgery, and since I had an injury over a year ago to my knee, it's been that long since I've been constantly using walking aids, and I am getting so tired of it!

Best of luck to you, Lorna, in finding treatment to deal with the source of your pain.

    Hi Lorna

I had bursitis before my hip replacement.  Because I was having pain in my hip that's what my doctor said I had.  Apparently it's the bursa pockets that cushion and stop the bone rubbing together, what wear. Thus causing friction between the bones and pain. I don't know how long it will last for you to be clear of this because you have already had your hip replaced. Hope you get it sorted there's nothing worse than pain. I can sympathise because I'm only 9 weeks post op and I get depressed because of my foot problem and it doesn't seem to be healing as quick as I'd like it to. After 9 months you should be feeling as if you are on the mend.

Thanks Denise will do.  After my physio it's really painful can't really see how this will help but will try anything.  I am lucky no work as I am 69 other than help an elderly neighbour.

I agree fed up after all this time.

hope all goes well for you.

Hi Lorna I'm 69 also and I can understand how fed up you feel. When I had the hip replacement I expected to be walking better. I joined a walking group and up to 2 years ago I was doing quite a few miles and leading walks. It was my liberation, but I had to stop walking because of my hip. Now with the problem with my foot I'm limited again. Because its it's been a while since your op you will be thinking you are going backwards. Keep in touch and let me know how things go for you. We have to talk about it to keep us sane.

Good Luck for a speedy recovery Brenda x

Lorna, if your physical therapy is causing you to hurt more afterwards, then it may be counterproductive. I fail to see how exercise can help with inflammation or tissue tears. Certainly if the muscle is healthy to begin with and you want to exercise to strengthen, a small amount of pain isn't out of place. But on unhealthy tissues? I don't think so.
