Carpal tunnel surgery anaesthetic injection

Hi all

I am having carpal tunnel release surgery soon and have a huge needle phobia.

I know it sounds ridiculous given the surgery (which I'm not remotely bothered by) given that I have suffered for years with limited sleep and pain.

Please tell me if that injection hurts? I have watched lots of videos to prepare myself 🙈

So far, so good. R hand still quite numb but sensation slowly returning to the left. No pain yet. Took ibuprofen after getting home as my surgeon recommended. Filled a script for Vicodin which I will take before going to bed. At this point things are much better than I expected. Hope it continues this way. Dressings can come off I'm 2 days, then I can shower. Nothing planned until the. Bulky dressings around base of my hand and wrists (bulkiness on the palm side) but fingers are exposed and becoming more useful.

Glad it went well. I didn't think you was from the UK as I didn't get offered nerve blockers. My surgeon advised me to keep the large dressing on for 10days when stiches taken out.And

less chance of infection. Though very restricting. Don't get your hand wet until stitches are out. No follow up appointment for us any more in the UK. You get discharged with an exercise sheet and a contact number if any concerns. Tbf that's all you need really. Speedy recovery to you.

I have heard the injection is painful but keep in mind that it is very temp. Youve probably suffered a lot worse pain getting to this pt. I had what they called a sedative. It was amazing. It was through an iv but no tubes or after affects. They can adjust it to knock you out completely or just a little & waking up was instant. Woke up, got dressed. My daughter brought me a latte & we left the hospital immediately to go out & have fun. Lots of luck!

Tha Jenny. When I get the app I'm going to speak to them about a sedative of some sort

Well I have been given the option for a general instead of a local. I would much prefer the hand needle than the wrist one. I know I'll feel more worse for wear after but am happier knowing I'll be knocked out 🙈

I think reducing anxiety goes a long way in making this a positive exp so am happy to hear you have this option.

They couldn't offer me anything else. Although I have to have the needle in my hand, it will reduce my anxiety significantly which makes me feel a whole lot better now smile

This will be a lot less painful although the anesthetic injected into the site of surgery only lasts a few seconds.

I was told if had a sedative that you're there longer so I opted out and braved it.

Hope it goes well for you.

Yeah I know what you mean. I will be there longer but that isn't something that bothers me. I'm having it the 24th April and have been working myself up so much about it 😆. Feeling a lot more relaxed now as I know what to expect from a general

Your recovery will be a lot easier if you just have the area numbed. It is literally 20 secs. Youll have to have needle anyway if you have General anaesthetic. Keep it quick and easy.

I had the op on the 8th April. Currently day 11 now. I also dreaded having the injection to numb the area. Yes, it does smart a fair bit, but not for long, about 20 seconds. Don't let it put you off having the op. I'm glad I did it. So good not to be woken every night with numb hand & fingers. I'm also due to have my left hand done at some point but it's not as bad as my right was. Hope all goes ok. You'll be glad when it's done.

How's you recovery going? I've been off almost 8 weeks now with my right hand and it's not healed quick at all. So much pain in my wrist. I went back this morning to speak to the surgeon and he said it's ok it's just taking time. Signed me off another 3 weeks! My left took 7 weeks to feel a lot better.

I'm definitely having the op but having the general. I've had lots of generals and am far happier to have the needle in the hand than in the wrist. The fact I will have a slightly longer recovery period is something I'm happy with. Kids will be at school, so an extra day of feeling crap doesn't worry me.

It might sound drastic but if I wasn't having the general, it's likely I would chicken out and wouldn't go 😆

      Hi.

Recovery going well. I can now pick thing up (light things) I can open the toothpaste. Lol !! Stitches come out tomorrow evening. I still get some pain in my wrist and thumb pad. I soon know if I've done too much though !! I've also noticed that under the bandages my palm is quite bruised up to my fingers but its not sore. I'm going back to work next week, but will take it easy & see how it goes. Yours seems to be taking a long time. I hope you get there soon. Good luck.

Good luck. Whichever way, it will be worth it in the end. I'm glad I got it done and want to get booked in for my left hand hopefully before the end of this year.

I have a manual job so I have to be right or almost. Thankyou.

Just have to go with the flow for now. I'm sure I'll be glad I had it done in a few months.

      Yours sounds a complete success.

See how the next few weeks go. Want to get back on my bike but a little nervous. Once final dressing is off I'll give it a go. Good luck.

I don't think going on a bike so soon is a good idea haha. Let it rest a bit. Told me not to overdo anything with it for 6 weeks.
