Has anyone taken the two tablets together. Does amitriptyline help anxiety. Any advice would be so helpful.

    Hi HOLLIE

I have been on and off citalopram at the highest dose for the last 30 years to help me deal with my lifelong depression and anxiety problems, 3 years ago I developed pain in my spine and I was found to have several protruding discs (lumbar and cervical) and some spinal degeneration (bone spurs and so on). Finally after, several MRI;,,cervical and lumbar injections and seeing all manner of specialists ranging from neurologists to physiotherapists to orthopedic surgeons I found a doctor who advised Amiltriptylene. Apparently it eases pain as well as being an effective antidepressant.

2 months down the line and I have never felt more alive, or pain free!!

I don't know if it's the combination that works or what but I've not felt better in years and am busy planning a long awaited trip to India!!

    Hope that helps

      Hi julia

?            I am a lifelong severe depression & social anxiety sufferer (since 15-back in 1982) and wasn't diagnosed until I was 35 by Psychiatrist....too long a story to explain late diagnosis.

?        I, like yourself, was put on citalopram initially, then virtually all SSRI'S & SNRI'S without long term success.

?         I'm now 48 & have studied/looked up on trycyclics & was put on Amitriptyline a month ago,but was only put on 25 mg,works for 3-5 hours & depression kicks back...says on leaflet you should start on 75 mg as an initial dose, rising to 100 to 150 mg until patient is stable, and then maintenance dose is usually 50-100 mg.

?     Just wanted to know (know you may not see this, but if someone else does...please advise) what dose you are on for your depression?

?   PS; Pleased to hear you have your life back!!

Hello Darren, I started on AMITRYPTALINE 37 years ago , I started on 70mg & then it went up to 150mg per day, after a few years my dose was gradually reduced unil the last 10 years when I WAS PUT ON 10mg per day. I am now well & have been off AAMITRYPTALINE for 11 weeks but the side effects are horrific, it will take months before I stop feeling the side effects. My GP put me on PROZAC 20mg twice a day to assist me as AMITRYPTALINE ARE VERY DANGEROUS TO TAKE AS WE GET OLDER, SORRY ABOUT HIGHER CASE i ws initialy put on AMITRPTALINE because I lived in AFRICA & suffered a very bad form of REACTIVE DEPRESSION & then BI POLAR & finally POST TRAUMATIC STRESS SYNDROME. I am now quite well thank goodness but, it was AFRICA WHICH MADE ME SO VERY ILL.

Ps I have had several Strokes three years ago , hence my bad typing..

That is a low dose for what you need it for. I can understand why it isn't lasting. Is this from your family doc. I would up the dose, and maybe another med. There are many families of meds. If you are finding it's working part time, then I would ask your doc about it. I have been on 20mg amitriptyline to help me with migraines, and tension headache. I am also on a antidepressant. They have both done their job.Hope you get squared away.

I used to take citalopram(celexa) for anxiety years ago. It worked, but at that time I was in my thirties, and I couldn't have an orgasm on the med. Yes I was, and am married. lol. I felt that I was to young for that, so I changed meds, several times for that reason. I have been on Cymbalta now for years, along with amitriptyline, and that combo has worked great for me. Now amitriptyline is used for migrains, anxiety, or a few other reasons. I have been on it for 8 years. You will have dry month from these meds, it's just the way it is. I am getting bad bruising on my legs and arms, and I sweat profusely, and I'm sure this is from  the amitriptyline. I look like I'm being abused, which I'm not. I am making an appt. to talk this over with my doc and see if there is another med for me. I do suffer from migrains, and this med has helped me. So these two together will work great for you. I'm just giving you a heads up on some side effects. Everyone is different, so you might not have any of these. Definitely give these a good try.

Thanks for responding. I'm almost for weeks in and I'm having those issues. I'm in my 30s and married so this could be an issue. I see my dr for a folow up this week and I plan on discussing that particular side effect. Other than that it's working great.

Hello  you can basically take most tablets with Amitryptaline with no worries.

However ask google to be sure on this.

It's ok to take at low doses, but if you google it, then it says at high doses you can have a condition called the Serotonin Syndrome...which it says can cause not very nice side effects...but as I've said above Dr's say it's ok to take at low doses...but if it where me I would defo get a Doctors opinion...even a second opinion if your not satisfied with 1st Doc.

?I've just started amitriptyline (on it's own for depression) but going back to Doc's as need higher dose, only on 25 mg, when it says on leaflet starting dose should be 75 mg.
