CITALOPRAM FOR OCD INTRUSIVE THOUGHTS

I just started the drug for OCD which does cause high levels of anxiety. Does anyone had experience of taking the drug for this condition. Did it help with the OCD  and anxiety or just the anxiety?

well, after day 6 of citalopram I developed akastesia and had to discontinue. was so bad I was rushed to the er and given ativan. 3 weeks later and I am still suffering from nasty symptoms which I am using a very small dose of mirtazapine to get me through. Most awful experience of my life omg I just wanted to jump out of my skin!! I was running in circles and banging into walls screaming and crying feeling truly insane. Going with supplements and therapy from here out. Don't get scared because of my experience because it is just that! My sister loves her Celexa!! SSRI.. SNRIs just aren't a good match for me anymore.

      Hi Kate,

Long time no messaging, it's Marketta here. I had to create a new user name as

could not login with the old.

So, after my initial experience with Citalopram in 2019 I made what I considered to be a full recovery. A lot of that was thanks to your immensely valuable help.

I weaned off the drug about 9 months ago and all was good, until... I've had a challenging spring, and without realising I must have been stressed, anxiety crept back in. In a very short space of time I am back in the full anxiety cycle. Constant nervousness, waves of fear. You name it, I have it. Once again I'm questioning recovery and feel stuck.

I am trying to apply the same approach as before, accept it is just energy etc. But I think I perhaps should start the meds again. In hindsight I weaned off at the wrong time considering the pandemic and what was going on in my personal life, even though I felt really strong.

Is there harm in going back on the drugs? Can they cause long lasting damage? I feel like once again I need a little help to move through this...

      Hi Marketta

It can happen - once you wean off the meds and stress creeps back in, this is usually ok but its when we start to question any feelings we may start to have that drags us back into the cycle again.

Acceptance really does work but of course it takes a long time to fully understand true acceptance and a long time to recover too.

There’s absolutely no harm at all returning to the meds - and you can still apply acceptance at the same time too.

No there is no long term harm taking the drugs - none that I’ve read anyway, and my doctor reassured me these can be taken for life if need be.

People take all sorts of life long (or long term meds) and these are no different. If you need them, then take them (I would). You wouldn’t suffer pain and would take a pain killer - so don’t suffer with anxiety. The meds are there to help you.

Kate, you are an angel. Once the drugs work this time, I will not be coming off them any time soon.

I'm having all the symptoms again, feel full of anxiety, nausea, burning arms, no appetite etc. Oh the joy!

I'm wondering if it is possible to recover on 10mg or if it is better to be on 20mg (I was last time) and once better maintain on 10mg? I've read the first therapeutic dose is 20mg so not sure if 10mg would do the trick.

Thats what I said and I never intended every coming off them - but I did eventually 😄 but spent about 20 years on the meds I think.

Lots of people recover on 10mg and other doses, so yes, you can. We’re all different and all need different doses. The meds do take a lot longer than you’re led to believe so do give them a long time, and if you feel you’ve not really improved then speak to your doctor to discuss an increase.

you all have to just hang in their. to be honest if it hadnt been for katecoggs i wud have stopped citalapalm months ago, so heres my story. i have the worst kind

of Pure OCD, widely regarded as the hardest to cure, very stubborn. its referred to as POCD, devoloped it around the birth of my second daughter 8 years. so if i can get results from this medication anyone can. started CIT about 4 an a half months ago on 20mm, didnt put a dint in my OCD, actually made it worse. continued on 20mm for about 11 weeks and decided to move upto 30mm, this us when the fun started hahah. really bad brain zaps, awfull toilet problems and general hell. then i got tinitus in both ears an decided to taper off CIT. a few days after moving back down to 20mm i just woke up in the morning and felt better, my first thought in the morning is not OCD Anymore, i just stooped gettin tge intrusive thoughts, or i just dont care now. and trust when i say this has been in my life everyday since my daughter was born. iam not perfect but the last 3 weeks have been amazing, u gotta let the CIT Settle, trust me u will all get summit from this, its taken me around 5 months, u gotta go thru mental pain barrier, good luck!

      Hey Nabsdabs

That’s brilliant you’re feeling well on Citalopram!! Yes it does take a long time and it can be a rough ride getting there. Its so worth the wait isn’t it.
