Cold sensation when breathing in!

Hi all

PLEASE PLEASE I need some advice if anyone has experienced these symptoms.....

For the last 6 months or so I have been coughing more so at night during my sleep and it wakes me up. Initially when I went to the Dr she thought I had acid reflux (which I have suffered from in the past), she put me on lansaprasole for 12 weeks and the cough has not stopped. I then saw another Dr whom said they need to do a chest xray so I had this done 10 days ago, the result is clear. The Dr gave me an reliever inhaler.

My symptoms are ~

Coughing that wakes me at night, dry and unproductive

Clearing throat all day

Tight feeling around the thyroid area

Blocked sound by throat when I breathe in (not a chest wheeze)

Scratch in my throat when I breathe in which provokes the cough

Cold air sensation when I inhale, this is constant

The Dr has referred me for a Spirometry and Reversability lung function test which is in 3 weeks. My son has extreme asthma and my grandmother had asthma which she developed in her 40's.

I used to be a smoker for 17 years, recently stopped 8 weeks ago.

The throat condition has been going on since last year, I had a clear xray Jan 2016 including a clear scope down the nose into my voicebox and lyranx together with an endoscopy to check for acid reflux - all clear! Series of 5 lots of FBC's & CA125 tests and thyroid blood tests - normal!

I am petrified I have an undetected lung cancer now, but the Dr thinks I have nocturnal & seasonal asthma. I use the inhaler when I feel blocked but it only last for a few hours where I feel some relief! At times it feels like I am breathing through a straw or piece of cloth!

ANY advice is very welcomed, this is driving me mad...........

Thank you

Hi, Kay! I, too, have experienced your same symptoms for years. I have been diagnosed with exercise/ allergy induced asthma by multiple doctors, however, no inhaler has ever reduced my symptoms. Last year I was referred to a new allergist for unrelated issues and happened to mention my years of suffering with all these symptoms similar to yours, including the inability to exercise due to wheezing/ lack of oxygen. She immediately said she thought she knew what I have. Subsequent testing confirmed it- vocal cord dysfunction, or VCD. Patients that suffer from VCD are often misdiagnosed with asthma for years because not many doctors are too familiar with it. I was referred to a speech therapist, as they are the "experts" in this area. It takes months of therapy to retrain your vocal cords to open and close properly but it can be cured!

      Hello Amy

WOW - thank you so much for your message - this is quite comforting to read, tell me, did you have a constant cough with VCD? You are not the first person to tell me to go and seek information on VCD - did you wheeze from your throat as opposed to your lungs?

This cold air breathing gets so bad sometimes it burns my throat if that makes sense?

Hopefully hear from you soon? x

Hi, Kay! With my VCD I wouldn't say I have constant coughing, but definite constant clearing of my throat. I do cough more than average, however, and it has gotten worse after having a cold over the winter. My wheezing does come from my throat during exercise because my vocal cords are constricting. The nice thing about looking into a VCD diagnosis is it's not really a guessing game. It has distinct symptoms that can be tested definitively. There is a non-invasive breathing test that will show a pattern of breathing distinctive to VCD sufferers, as well as a test involving a scope to actually see your vocal cords not functioning properly.

Another symptom I haven't mentioned is a frequent dry throat. I wake up almost nightly gasping for air because of a "dry spot" on my throat or vocal cords. I don't know for sure it is caused by VCD but it all seems related.

Hope some of this helps- at least it's a possible cause of your symptoms that can be easily confirmed or eliminated by an allergist or pulmonologist.

Hi Kay. How have you been getting on? I’m 25 and I had your same symptoms. Have you got any further in finding any answers to yours yet?

I honestly feel like I just want to rip my throat out, it is so u comfortable! It goes from my thyroid area into my upper chest, just above my breasts. This has been happening since August 2017. I have also had right sided upper back pain since May 2017. I have had chest X-rays, endoscopy, neck ultrasound, blood work, a spinal MRI.. all clear... the only things I haven’t had are a bronoscopy/CT scan. The doctors think I’m too young and don’t want to risk a CT scan.  I’m worried I have undiagnosed tracheal or lung cancer and it’s just getting worse because it’s not being diagnosed!

I’m desperate for you all to say you’re okay to give me hope. I wish I could find a reason for this throat discomfort because it’s ruining my whole life!

I also forgot to say, the doctors are telling me it’s anxiety based because all tests have come back clear. I’ve also had the camera up my nose to my vocal chords (clear) but not any lower which is why I’m thinking if the cancer is in my trachea, i’ll never know if they don’t go lower! I just can’t accept that it’s long term anxiety damage because it does not come and go. It is constant from the minute I wake until the minute I go to sleep. I just can’t accept that ‘anxiety’ symptoms would last around 7/8 months now!

      HI there

Sorry I have only just seen your messages - tell me your symptoms, mine are the following and have been for the past 2 years

      Wheeze by my throat

Cold air sensation when breathing in

      Constant dry hacking cough

Breathing in makes the cough worse and laughing, feels like I am breathing through a cloth at times

      Feeling strangled

When I lay down its like something is pressing on my throat

I have had two chest xrays, camera down my nose and my throat and loads of blood work, all came back clear. I was referred to a respiratory consultant whom did breathing and lung function tests which were all normal (to him), I live with two cats and he put it down to a Hyper sensitive airway reaction to cat dander and allergic reactions, NOW, I explained that I have these symptoms constantly, he said I will as long as I have the pets around me...so either get rid of them (which I will not do) or live with it........

I know the fear of cancer - it swirls through my head all day - lung cancer etc....

      Do you smoke? I do.........sad

Let me know how you are

I'm so glad I have found a forum of people with the same symptoms. for me the cold sensation is a blessed relief. for the last 3 months I have been struggling to breath. it's been like breathing through a straw, constantly 24/7 with occasional attacks of short breath and choaking on fluids from the back of my throat. just recently I took anti inflametries and for the first time in 3 months I can breath a full deep breath. but yes the inbreath feels ice cold. its my airways not lungs I can feel that. Drs don't know. Anxiety? . I'm anxiously awaiting a doctors to know the score. this is a physical sensation that can induce panic, yes. Relaxed breathing does help to manage that. I'm a Halo trained freefall parachutist. I don't do panic. I hope you all find your answers. if anyone can help me please make contact. I'm now going to burn my vey expensive duck down duvet in a prossess of ellimanation. good luck everyone stay positive and relaxed. we should consider our mortality but only to make our life and days more precious.
