Cold sensation when breathing in!

Hi all
PLEASE PLEASE I need some advice if anyone has experienced these symptoms.....
For the last 6 months or so I have been coughing more so at night during my sleep and it wakes me up. Initially when I went to the Dr she thought I had acid reflux (which I have suffered from in the past), she put me on lansaprasole for 12 weeks and the cough has not stopped. I then saw another Dr whom said they need to do a chest xray so I had this done 10 days ago, the result is clear. The Dr gave me an reliever inhaler.
My symptoms are ~
Coughing that wakes me at night, dry and unproductive
Clearing throat all day
Tight feeling around the thyroid area
Blocked sound by throat when I breathe in (not a chest wheeze)
Scratch in my throat when I breathe in which provokes the cough
Cold air sensation when I inhale, this is constant
The Dr has referred me for a Spirometry and Reversability lung function test which is in 3 weeks. My son has extreme asthma and my grandmother had asthma which she developed in her 40's.
I used to be a smoker for 17 years, recently stopped 8 weeks ago.
The throat condition has been going on since last year, I had a clear xray Jan 2016 including a clear scope down the nose into my voicebox and lyranx together with an endoscopy to check for acid reflux - all clear! Series of 5 lots of FBC's & CA125 tests and thyroid blood tests - normal!
I am petrified I have an undetected lung cancer now, but the Dr thinks I have nocturnal & seasonal asthma. I use the inhaler when I feel blocked but it only last for a few hours where I feel some relief! At times it feels like I am breathing through a straw or piece of cloth!
ANY advice is very welcomed, this is driving me mad...........
Thank you

Hi Kay. i am a 51 year old male for Malaysia. i have all the symtomps you have except coughing. I have feel this cool sensation when inhale and it felt cool in my nose, lips, mouth, throat, stomach and chest, front and behind. It started almost 2 months ago. It all started with a panic attack, then the cool sensation. After 2 weeks I decided to quit smoke cold turkey. after few days I got GERD or reflux. Up to today. But I do not cough or catch cold. Only sore throat like and cools feelings like you mentioned. thank you for sharing your post. i have been looking in the internet and now I got the answer. thanks again.

Thanks for your response. Yes the cold sensations for me also started about 5 years ago and it started when I was in a state of anxiety and panic - I still get the sensation in my throat every now and then but no where near the amount of times I used to get it. Its like you have just brushed your teeth but eaten the toothpaste lol - My Dr was scratching his head when I told him, he said he never heard of it before - I had a camera down my throat to my stomach and nothing was found, then I was tested for cat allergies and it came back positive (quite high reading) I had 3 cats at the time - they put it down to this - coughing - I cough all the time..... I smoke also so its not good but I live with the sensations now

Haha..i dont have cats but I do have 3 grownups kids . After having dinner just now the cold sensation felt rising from my stomach and up to below my chest and also my behind. My friend told me not to lie down after meal and keep my body posture straight for it might be acid reflux or GERD. But i dont feel like to vommit or short of breath. The sensation in my nose, lips, mouth and throat still there. along with sore throat. For the record here are my story :
18 January 2020- got panic attack,/anxiety, started feeling cold sensation in body and head. Shortness of breath. Went to hospital emergency unit, gone thru ECG, X Ray, CT Scan, Blood test. Results all negative. I am ok but doctor said it might be nerve decease. I was given Vitamin B pills.
19 January 2020. Stop smoking. but smoke again 4 days later. Few days later I experience GERD or acid reflux. But most of the time came with the cold sensation.
14 Feb 2020. Last cigarette
Today 11 March 2020 I am smoke free for more than 3 weeks.
So I figured it that firstly I am facing panic attack or anxiety disorder, which causes the cold sensation and I am also going through nicotine withdrawal effects such as GERD, nausea, dizziness and others. According to my friend who also a retired smoker the cold sensation could also be the withdrawal effect. I dont know. I hope we all will do well. Thanks Kay.

Firstly congrats on not smoking - I cant say I wish I could as I like smoking soo....
Yes, I noticed this when I stopped smoking a couple of years back, I too thought it was a withdrawal symptom however it continued when I started smoking again....
I firmly believe that anxiety causes mine, when I am calmer I do notice it - if I get stressed I swear it gets so bad it hurts my throat like I am out in -50 deg weather and inhaling icy air.....
This can definitely be reflux also, silent reflux, when you dont know you are getting reflux ie sleeping etc...it can burn your esophagus - I have many a nights woken up to acid reaching my voicebox and literally choking me - the day after episodes of this my throat hurts, burns and the ice feeling comes back also days after...
Will we get a definative diagnosis, no, can we live with it, yes even though its SUPER annoying!

HI,
I have been having the exact same symptoms for the last month. First started with my throat, then breathing in cold air through my nose and chest. I also find relief when chewing gum strangely. I was in the ER last night and they said it was acid reflux and testing me for ulcers. I do not believe it is acid reflux causing the cold breathing. I also went through Anxiety and Panic 3 MONTHS ago. I also find im super sensitive to smells such as oils, candles, detergents... I was hoping through this thread you would have found a diagnosis 😦

Hi, I've been experiencing the same things, but my biggest concern is that, every time I breathe, a cold breeze comes threw my throat it becomes very annoying but it never goes away. I've had this problem for over 4 years. If you or anyone has some kind of solution, i would greatly appreciate it please. Thank you!

Hi Kay,
I'm very new to this group and i don't know if you are still finding the breathing in when cold a problem?
I have asthma and bronchiactisis, always been under control until i recently moved house. The cold when breathing in started, never had it before, dry cough, breathless and dry nose.
We put a humidity meter in t he room and it turned out the humidity levels in the house are too low sometimes. I'm very breathless with the cold feeling when the humidity level fall below 30. If steam with boiling water in a bowel the dryness goes from my nose and throat. If i sleep with a bowl of water out and on the rad that also helps. I also have to shut the windows. I definitely think this problem is caused buy low humidity levels.
If you have not got one, get yourself a humidity meter so you can monitor it yourself. The cold feeling, the dry cough, the dry throat, breathlessness, it subsides when the humidity levels rise. Have lots of herbal tea with honey and oily food to lubricate and steam open the airways.
Take care x

Hello Kay! I too am experiencing these exact symptoms on a smaller scale, cool breathing sensation, bronchial spasms, throat and chest tightness, consistent for 7 weeks now. I have never been a cigarette smoker, although I am a light marijuana smoker for about 5 years. I stopped as SOON as I noticed these symptoms. Also to illustrate how lightly I did smoke, I kept thc intake lower than about 20 ml at any given time. I did try a vape cartridge for the first time this year 2020, but that was the only time as I didnt care for it. My x-ray was clear, my pulmonologist put me on a non-steroid inhaler (ARNUITY ELLIPTA) where there is some temporary relief, similar to relief from taking a hot steamy shower.... Other than that I'm supposed to use this inhaler for 2 weeks, currently 1 week down. And if still not improved, a CT scan may be next.... I'm trying to remain optimistic however I also don't want to sit around in case time is of the essence. What was the turn out for you? Are you feeling better? Not just out of my own curiosity but I really hope you are much better today!!!!!!!!! My best. If you see this, please let me know how you're doing.

Hi there
Thanks for the message - well guess what years down the line & I STILL have the same issues, I have now learnt to live with it, countless times been for xray's all clear, blood work all clear, lung function tests are on the range normal, been given steroid powder inhalers that makes me cough, the only relief I get is if I take a rescue inhaler when the blocked wheeze sound by my throat starts and then the cool area sensation begins... that lasts for hours and the next day I am back to square one and it starts all over again!
I am a smoker and I have a cat dander allergy - not sure if this is the cause of all of this but I have given up going to the Dr or trying to find out what this is...........
I really hope you can get some answers as I have failed!

Kay, thank you so much for writing back. I'm so sorry to hear and I will most certainly keep you posted on anything I come across or find out. I do have one more question/possible insight..... This happened to me in the midst of our pandemic, so at first I thought I caught the virus, which many tests later have shown negative.... I think covid was the perfect distraction from finding the underlying cause of this, and I realize something else may be related to how I became sick... I wonder if you can relate to this too.... One night during quarantine (Mar 20th) my best friend and I had dinner and margaritas. I'm not a frequent drinker, just on special occasions BUT this particular evening I ended up throwing up a few times. The onset of some of my current symptoms were there when I woke up the next morning. I didn't think much of it then, since I was only having some spasms and a throat itch (and I've thrown up enough in my life to notice I've never had these symptoms before)... But NOW I'm beginning to think I may have caused a mild aspiration pneumonia or SOMETHING. I thought i would share this with you just in case it's a common denominator.... you never know....do you recall any aspiration events just before your symptoms began? Just hoping to put some brains together and investigate as much as I possibly can.

Thank you - I had it really bad on Tuesday evening - the blocked sound coming from my throat was unbearable and the cold sensation was driving me mad - I took a anti hystamine but this did totally nothing.........next day it was ok but then started up again that evening, its gets to the point where it feels like I cant breathe properly, I take my sats like oxygen and bpm which is all normal when it happens - I have had bacterial pneumonia before but no aspiration....might look into that. This all started when I moved house about 5 years ago where 3 cats lived......now I only live with 1 and its still with me.
The Dr says its cat dander allergy that causes allergic asthma, I mean it makes sense......BUT its so horrible, I cry sometimes as it gets my anxiety so bad feels like I am breathing through a cloth......

Hello Kay! sorry you are still feeling the symptoms. I guess i can relate a bit of my symptoms with yours. I have allergic rhinitis.
From past 4 months i had on/off Gerd/LPR. I was on PPI for 2.5months. I also take a nasal spray for my allergic rhinitis which is ** Avamys Fluticasone Furoate Nasal Spray**. i use to cough a lot before due to acid reflux but now my cough is controlled. i still do coughing sometimes. Also to control my acid reflux i am taking a bland diet which is helping me. and i have stopped taking PPI'S. So i also face the same problem when i breath in i can feel the air in my throat and it irritates me a lot. Don't know if it is due to my allergic rhinits or acid reflux or something else. Also i don't know if i have asthma!

Thanks for your reply - a Dr once said to me its LPR - silent reflux but when I went for the endoscopy they found nothing to suggest reflux even though from time to time I get acid during my sleep waking me as its gone straight up to my voicebox......awful.......
I dont believe I have asthma, I might believe that the cat dander allergy I have produces asthmatic symptoms...
I also wake every single morning with a stuffy nose like I have a cold.......and now I have had for the 2nd day a pain or irritation on my forehead like a de-hydration headache.....maybe sinus issues?

Hi there
Not a clue what it is....been living with it for 6 years....I just have to live with it I guess I have always been - I suck on boiled and mint sweets all the time when I get the sensation......it helps....I get a blocked sound coming from my throat too so I dont know if this is related........I smoke so I probably have myself to blame
