Constant head pressure in the temples and eyes

Posted , 89 users are following.

I have had pain and pressure in my eyes and temples for almost a year now. My face feels fuzzy and tingly and I feel woozy a lot of the time. Nothing takes the pain away when it is really bad. Tried Tylenol 3's and oxycocet with no relief. The only thing that helped with the intensity of the pain was Inderal (Proponolol) which is a migraine prophylactic or a high blood pressure medication. It relaxes the blood vessels. Even on the medication I had times when I still felt woozy and my face felt fuzzy and tingly. I went off the Inderal for a while as it also impacted my Gastroparesis and I am trying Flunarizine another migraine medication but not having much luck. I still have the constant pain and pressure in my temples and eyes on both sides. MRI on the neck and head were both normal. Really frustrated as I feel awful pretty much every day. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

does anyone else out there find that the pain meds do nothing for the burning pressure/pain in the temples and eyes? Sometimes it is excruciating and nothing takes it away. I saw my doctor and he said that my paranasal sinuses were normal according to the CT scan but he has referred me to 2 different ENT docs just in case. I also get postural lightheadedness sometimes too but my doc checked my heart and it is fine. It is over a year now and not sure how much more of this I can take. Haven't tried naturopathic yet but I may be forced to go that route if I don't get some answers soon. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    thanks.

I have similar problem. Had had it five years and was a year before the medics took me seriously. I take 20mg Amitriptyline every day to dampen it down tho'it never away it does help.

Unfortunately at present I feel awful and have increased dosage to 40 plus any pain killers I can find and till suffering. I feel like I did before I started the Amitriptyline. Saw a nerve specialist five years ago and he sad he had heard of the pressure symptoms but not the fuzzy tingling stuff.

It it can really get me down. Hope this calms down a bit soon. Maybe I need to increase Amitriptyline  even more. Will return to doctor this week if it persists.

hope me you try Amitriptyline and it helps you.

I have had this pain going on 6 years and it is driving me nuts.....I have tried amitriptyline, and I have just got done trying gabapentin and an anti depressant and nothing is taking the pain away. I have had CT scans, MRIs, and even had nose surgery to clear out my sinuses and still nothing. I have horrible pain in my temples in the bridge of my nose and my forehead.....The pain also goes under the eyes like a tingly feeling and no one can seem to find a solution.....I have an appointment back at the VA in two weeks but I am not sure what else can be done. Has anyone found any other way of getting this pain to go away???? Just to go to sleep at night I have to wear one of those 80s Nike sweat bands around my forehead and temples as I can't? sleep without it unless I lay on one side and press my thumb into my temple to apply pressure.....Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated as it seems to be getting worse every year that goes by and I have become a hermit not wanting to do anything...I was at the theater the other day and the pain in my temples was crazy and I even had pain in my jaw and teeth. I do sleep with a mouth guard now as they thought the pain was coming from me grinding my teeth but been wearing it for almost a month now and no change.....Please help. Thank you for anyone's time who reads this.

      Hi Brian

I have the exact same pain and is only relieved by putting pressure on that part of my skull, this only just happened two days ago, I wonder is it caused my something to do with sinuses as I have been fighting some kind of bug for last week which is unusual for me and have been constantly blowing nose and full of muscus! The other weird thing is a lot of people asking about anxiety I started taking anti anxiety medilation two days ago and then changed my mind as I hate taking pills if I can help it, I wonder is anyone else on anti anxiety meds!

I only have this a couple of days I feel so sorry for anyone suffering for what looks like years it must be hell,

Hope somebody gets some answers soon.

Hey Brian - Yes, I have been looking at the same thing to heal for some time... I wonder if it is: (a) food allergy or reaction; (b) symptom of a liver headache due to pathways not clearing up well enough - have you had a full blood count and check if you liver works well and you don't have a high bilirubin count? It could be sluggish phase I or II pathways?; (b) you could try BodyTalk or even EmotionCode/Body Code therapy to provide further insight or answers as to what is happening... you can purchase sessions quite cheaply like under $10 USD on

      Hello Brian,

Another VA patient here suffering with same pressure for a long time now.

Did your visit to the VA help at all?

My doctor at the VA just gave me Gabapentin and flonase and told me my problems are allergies and sinus issues.

Any information you have is appreciated.

I see the doctors at the VA Clinic here in Jacksonville, FL.

Thanks and best wishes that you are feeling better???

So sorry for you. I have exactly the same but Amitriptyline helps dampen the feeling. You can take quite a high dosage of this. If I distract myself by doing things it helps too.

Nothing worse than sitting thinking about it.

I also have like a swarming of bees in my head too if not on medication.

    Agree than no painkillers help.

I used to have this too. I went to an eye Dr and found out I had glaucoma and the pressure in my eyes threw me off all the time. Gave me horrible headaches. I use drops now but I still get it from time to time.

I had this kind of pain 2 years ago, after many months of research i linked it to my dandruff shampoo Selsun blue. it took several months for the pain to go away completely after the last exposition to the product.

Hi my fellow temple headache sufferers, I was just googling about my temple headache issues and found there are so many people like me. I did research and came across my or possibly your condition could be something known as "temporal arteritis". The word is not arthritis but arteritis and it's related to inflammed arteries in your temple. Serious conditions could lead to a stroke or death. MRIs and scans might not detect that too. There is a weakness in the main or medium artery in the temple. This condition is not curable but can be treated with corticosteroid. However corticosteroid use for longer term can bring many negative side effects. I researched if there could be natural supplements that could help me to dilate blood vessels for better blood flow in the brain. There are. I just ordered some online. I don't know if they would work but my research said these two supplements could work synergistically to dilute blood vessels and deliver more oxygen to the brain, helping to relieve and prevent headaches. They are Hawthorn berries and Gingko Biloba. These two supplements could work well together. I have not tried them yet. I just ordered them. Hope they will help you and help me. I will let you know after I try them. My temple headache I have had then for a very long time since mid to late 20's. I am 55 now and the situation has gone worse to the point that I not only feel headaches but feeling not enough oxygen flowing to my brain which has made me sleepy and tired all the time, to the point of fatigue and hard to function during the day. I had MRI done and nothing was found but my headache never went away. Always in the temple area and sometimes I feel numbness on my face. I will try these supplements and will report to the group how they may or may not have helped me. I am Canadian and I also live in Ontario Canada.

Hi, have you received these supplements and tried them? I've had these symptoms for 4 years now. I've had 2 scans including MRI that showed ok. I was referred to a neuro consultant who put it down to Atypical Trigeminal Neuralgia - which really doesn't help as its basically a term used for facial pain they can't be diagnosed from what i can see. I was put on Nortriptylene which sort of just took it down one notch but hasn't at all helped in getting my life back. If i upped the dosage from 25 mg as they advised after a while, i got really bad acid reflux and other things so it was never an option. I've recently come off it all together now, trying to find something to resolve it completely. Magnesium oil rubbed into the temples is the best thing i have found so far. Caiscian cream didn't really help nor do anti inflammatories. I tried a course of treatment at a chiropractor as well as he said he could help - no joy. I am interested in your idea as the pressure around the temples deifnitely feels like it could be blood flow related. I don't have high blood pressure etc but would love to know if you have found any relief from your Hawthorn and Gingko

Hi Jason, yes I have received them and on them now. It would take a few months though as they are not miracle pills. Consistency is the key. I don't currently have the temple headache now but it comes and goes and when it is bad, it is really bad. I am currently seeing also an acupuncturist as well. He put very fine needed by my temple area. I have seen him for other pain issues and he has helped me. Now I have him tried it on my head. All it really does is it improves the blood flow in the area. I go once a week. Other pain treatment he would connect electric current to the needles but he said not for the head. He pinned me then walked out of the room then came back half way to check on me. The session is about half hour long. Sometimes it's very relaxing and I could fall asleep. I do find this treatment helpful. Unfortunately this treatment can only be covered by an insurance plan and the limit is low so I might have to pay out of pocket above the premium I already paid to the insurance company. I definitely agree with you it is related to blood flow and I find the acupuncture treatment helpful and not really too invasive.

thank you for the reply. I did think about acupuncture but hesitant about spending more when results seem to vary from what people say. I'm in the UK so i would be paying for anything like that. If it helps though the cost is no issue!!

Hi Jason, my doctor actually is a chiropractor and an acupuncturist and a practitioner in sports injury. He is a very good overall healer. I am fortunate to have found someone like that. Before he studied all these, he graduated from kinesiology so he understands the body structure and pressure points. See if you can find someone like that. I hope it works great for you. All the best. I like more naturopathic treatments if I could afford it cause all commercial drugs have side effects. My belief is always that if you stimulate the body the right way, the body does have the ability to heal itself. I am going the route of natural supplementation and acupuncture treatments. Hope they will work well.
