Constant, odd , 'cold' feeling in throat and roof of mouth...anyone else have this with reflux?

Hi all
For a long time now I have been experiencing the oddest sensation and I am not sure if it is to do with acid reflux. I have a very cold, almost 'minty' sensation in my mouth all the time. it feels like the sensation you have when you breath in after cleaning your teeth, or after sucking a strong mint. My throat and roof of mouth feels cold - not irritated - just cold and tingly.
I have had problems with reflux in the past and have been on proton pump inhibitors. I am not on a prescription at the moment. i have had an endoscopy and was diagnosed with acute gastritis about ten years ago. I often get heartburn and indigestion.
I have mentioned this top my GP who looks at me like I am mad and says he has never heard of it.
However, I am not imagining it, and wondered if this odd symptom was shared by anyone else with reflux.
I am a lady of a 'certain age' .........and I have read on the net that this odd sensory change could have something to do with hormonal changes at menopause. Just trying to rule everything out, so would be grateful for any input.
Thanks

It could be something you eat, or something you drank. i do not know for sure. Be more clear with your doctor about the symptoms. This is all you could do, or obviously google it.

Hi, you might find this surprising but I believe it can be anxiety related / induced or muscle spasm / nerves related as well. I have had this very same symptoms often, even very bitter, acidic taste in my mouth but usually only when I think I have them and I focus on them for a little while. Try to break out of it and see if its correlated in any way to your mood, notice if you feel it more when you might think you're having them, or when your mood is down (especially if you are generally worried about it and you know the symptoms that people feel normally). You probably don't have this when your mood is up or when you do something that gives you positive emotions. I often try to fight it with my brain by forcing myself to believe that I don't have anything and that I am making it up and in a couple of seconds the symptoms go away fully, or I try to redirect the pain and imagine I am feeling it somewhere else in the body. This made the symptoms go away completely as it seems that your brain is inducing either muscles spasms in muscles or it triggers the nerves around that side of your body that produces the sensation of pain. So notice if that makes it go way, if it its that then its anxiety related, I know it feels very real but there's actual studies that show how you throat becomes more sensitive (mentally) and then gives you these sensations or triggers some of the nerves/ muscles that make you feel this way. But please do the necessary medical investigations either way, even for your piece of mind! Please try it, its been quite a revelation for me! All the best!

Wow I'm relieved to find other people experiencing the same symptoms as myself. That strange minty feeling in my throat like I have been sucking on menthol lozenges. I'm glad I'm not the only one, but it's really bothersome. I wish I knew what was causing this. It seems to have started around March of 2020 or so. I have asthma and I know I was having a really hard time breathing then around the time it seemed to start, whether it's a coincidence or not i don't know. I also do get Vertigo pretty often. I know I do get reflux and I don't take anything for that. I hope we get an answer as to why this menthol sensation is happening to us all. I haven't been to a Dr. about it or asked really except for once and the Dr had no idea what I was talking about and offered no opinion or info. I'm now thinking it is linked to reflux after reading some of these comments.

Come across this thread recently and thought I would add my experience.
I have nasal polypis which effect my taste and smell and have been used to phantom smells fro many years but never until recently have I had the menthol effect, it really freaked me out so was very glad to find this thread and read identical symptoms.
Breathing in and out giveing a very cold sensation, feeling like I am breathing out solvent and also alcohol, mainly lager, tasting like solvents, incredibly awful.
After a bit of digging I think I am convinced I have had covid-19 with only mild symptoms (menthol mouth an exception pscologically at least).
Reason being a number of people I worked with all tested positive a few weeks before this started happening to me also I have read a number of articles, this being the one that convinced me to chill out and wait for it to ease of, its uncomfortable but knowing its nothign serious is a comfort.
this is the article https://www.advisory.com/daily-briefing/2020/11/10/covid-smell

I have had a slew of weird things going on for the last few months, including this, so imagine my surprise to find a feed on it. the minty feeling is constant ~ (and I despise mint, so it's disgusting, it's like adding toothpaste to all of my meals and beverages ) it's from my mouth, right down into my belly. Such an odd sensation, I NEVER thought I'd see someone else with it.
I feel like I have had way more mucus too, mildly runny nose to the thick gunk in the back of your throat and a bit of a dry cough.
Also .... I smell weird. It's not my smell. It's not gross or dirty or foul. Just weird. Like a Metallic smell. I'm cold a lot, like suddenly my circulation is shot too - so I notice it the most if I wear a hoodie or enclose myself in a blanket - then I catch it - it's a mild version of my also newish very strong urine smell. I've been wondering if it was medication related?? it would be great I guess if all of this could be alleviated by switching meds? but I read someone else had little luck with dissipation after the same.
just a bunch of strange stuff and I'm on here like the rest of you trying to see what you have learned. I don't really dig the whole going to the doctor unless absolutely necessary thing ... so subjecting myself to a barrage of "what if" tests doesn't work for me ... I'll let you go first 😒😉🙈

I also have this cool, menthol sensation in my mouth and throat when I breathe in. I was diagnosed with a Pelvic Floor Dysfunction, "Pelvic Dyssynergia". I don't have normal bowel movements, constipation of sorts. I'm going to a Physical Therapist which is helping. When I get that cool sensation, I will massage my stomach to get things moving and the cool feeling will go away. My docs are still testing to see if there are other triggers to the pelvic dyssynergia. I do have other symptoms like low back pain that comes and goes, recurring sinus infection that comes and comes, a coolness on my skin on different parts of my body, like my circulation is restricted, pressure in my eyes that comes and goes.
I'll post again when I get more answers.

Does more people have these symptoms as I don't want to eat or drink coffee anymore

I've been experiencing this for the past few months as well. I not only feel the icy sensation in my mouth & nose but also in my ears. I've been experiencing a whole host of random symptoms along with this that I'm not sure if they are related or are just a coincidence. I too have suffered with acid reflux and have been on omeprazole for my years. I was diagnosed approx 15yrs ago with a rare autoimmune disease, which I have been in remission..However recently my bloodwork has given cause for concern that I may have relapsed. So I was referred to an ENT for a sinus biopsy to see if it had returned & was attacking my blood vessels. Thankfully the sinus biopsy was clear, however because of all of these other issues I've been having, including the ringing in my ear & the icy feeling, ect the ENT did a head MRI. The results of the MRI showed significant change in white matter in my brain from the previous scans I had 10 years prior, which he is stated can be caused by MS. So he has now referred to a neurologist, which I am waiting to be seen by. So that is where I am at with this whole process. I was unable to get any answers from the ENT about what was causing this icy feeling. I'm really sorry you all are going through this as well, but I am happy that I found this forum so that at least I know I'm not crazy & I'm not alone. If I'm able to find out any answers from the neurologist, if he is able to give me any insight into what is causing this, I will be back to share the info with all of you. God Bless!

I've been experiencing the odd cold feeling for about 4 months. I've suffered from GERD for over 5 years but never treated it. I would take TUMS and HALLS daily for years. Till I finally figured that wasn't a good idea. I went to a Gastroenterologist who put me on Pantoprazole. First time in my life I'd been on a PPI. To paint the picture. I was 271 lbs 5'9 suffering from horrible acid reflux daily. Then this annoying cold sensation started every time I would inhale. I'd feel the cold at the top of my mouth and back of my throat. When I inhaled through my nose I wouldn't feel it. I took the pantoprazole for a month. I went from 271 lbs to 228. I started gargling with warm salt water every night for a couple weeks. I stop using floss flavored in mint. Which is just about every floss. I finally found an unflavored floss. I started water fasting for 72 hours for a couple weeks. 72 hours of just water while the pantoprazole healed my esophagus. I was supposed to go get an endoscopy but I chickened out. I feel great. No acid reflux, No cold sensation, for the first time in about 5 years. Probably a lot longer than that, but 5 years ago is when it got bad.

i have that exact cold feeling in my mouth and throat. I developed it after chemotherapy. My oncologist doesn't seem to know what it is. I have suffered in the past with GERD. I take prescription Prilosec for it. I am having an endoscopy in about a month.I sure thought it had something to do with my chemo! Mine seems to get worse when I Eat sweets, but i have it all the time. Has anyone else gotten it after chemo?
