Constant, odd , 'cold' feeling in throat and roof of mouth...anyone else have this with reflux?

Hi all

For a long time now I have been experiencing the oddest sensation and I am not sure if it is to do with acid reflux. I have a very cold, almost 'minty' sensation in my mouth all the time. it feels like the sensation you have when you breath in after cleaning your teeth, or after sucking a strong mint. My throat and roof of mouth feels cold - not irritated - just cold and tingly.

I have had problems with reflux in the past and have been on proton pump inhibitors. I am not on a prescription at the moment. i have had an endoscopy and was diagnosed with acute gastritis about ten years ago. I often get heartburn and indigestion.

I have mentioned this top my GP who looks at me like I am mad and says he has never heard of it.

However, I am not imagining it, and wondered if this odd symptom was shared by anyone else with reflux.

I am a lady of a 'certain age' ....smile.....and I have read on the net that this odd sensory change could have something to do with hormonal changes at menopause. Just trying to rule everything out, so would be grateful for any input.

Thanks

Grateful for this thread. I feel like I am losing my mind. I have menthol like feeling in my throat (which I've had that before with reflux), but my tongue burns a little. My eyes and the insides of my nose feel like I have touched them with menthol. Even my gums feel off. I have taken medicine for reflux for a few years and I'm wondering if maybe my medicine is wearing off? I have anxiety, and this is leading to almost daily panic attacks.

I had done some research on how our skin is the biggest organ but the stuff we put on our skin is the least regulated, so had started moving to toxic-free laundry detergent and face products. I'm wondering if maybe I'm having a reaction to that? I kept telling my husband it felt like I had rubbed a Burt's Bee's chapstick on my face and around my eyes and nose the first time it started. Interestingly, I found a Burt's Bee's chapstick in the clean laundry from that day, so I thought I had figured it out. But it's still happening.

I haven't had Covid, that I know of, so also wondered if maybe I did and this was long Covid. I am also perimenopausal and saw that someone had mentioned that above. I don't know. I feel like I'm losing my mind. I have have a doctor's appointment tomorrow, and will bring it up, but I'm not expecting any answers.

Wonder if any of you who have experienced this ever got any answers you could share with the rest of us?

Same sensation here too, since Saturday. on Friday, the night before i had such terrible acid reflux and regurgitation, I vomited 5 times. only bile and tiny bits of undigested food from several says previous. been taking proton pump inhibitors for 15 years. since i was taking a ppi when that happened i decided to stop taking and fast for a couple days. as soon as i started eating again, however small the amount, ive been experiencing this cold sensation in my throat. i dont smoke no alcohol and have stopped caffeine since Friday too. its so strange because it doesnt hurt but it doesnt feel right. i thought the headaches were maybe from caffeine but that should have subsided. it feels serious but at the same time im so weirded out by it. i emailed my dr today

i feel like I have been going through this for years. it comes and goes often, sometimes for weeks then days. it feels like I chewed really minty gum on a extremely cold winter day.

it's been going on for 4 days now, and it's even to the point where when I close my eyelids, they are cold. it's almost like anything that is moist (shudders) in my face has this freezing sensation. l feel like i need to wear a scarf just to prevent cold air from entering my nose, even if it's warm, and everything on and around me is warm! this is nuts, there has to be some explanation.

My started after I started doing often Dry Sauna followed by cold plunge.

I am thinking if could be due to inhaling hot air which might make the back of nose and throat sensitive or burned.

Could also be an essential oil i sometimes use in the sauna.

i am curious if more of you do sauna often?

    Hi,

I am sorry for your experience. I know what is that as I am confronting with the same symptoms. Beside the cold/menthol feeling in my mouth and nose I experiencing menthol burning sensation in my eyes and stomach. Sometimes even on my skin. I don't have reflux problem. My symptoms appeared after my COVID buster. Din you have a COVID vaccin? Did you see a doctor regarding those symptoms?

    Thanks,

I have suffered with these symptoms for around four years. I have taken Omeprazole since 2005, and have also tried a nasal spray. I suffer with Vertigo (MAV). My Neurologist suggested taking Magnesium Citrate. I took them for a few months but have finished taking them as they didn't help the Vertigo. What they did do it to take the cold feeling away totally I don't understand why it worked, but it did. The symptoms are now back...

    Hi,

After reading through all of the replies, I am guessing that the cold feeling in the throat, no matter whether it comes from illness (CoViD), allergy, acid reflux, fungus, or anything, seems to be from nerve damage, or at least nerve stimulation. Including anxiety.

I developed this symptom myself from a strange source. My laptop computer was randomly shutting down, which I surmised to be an overheating problem. I ordered a cooling pad from ebay. A cooling pad is a small, thin metal enclosure, the size of a coffee table book, that the laptop sits on, and fans inside the enclosure blow air up into the laptop. Before I could think to use it, the laptop's overheating problem went away by itself (a program was causing the CPU to run at 100% for too long, but then, the program stopped trying to do that), so the fan sat in its box for months. Then, the problem happened again, so I decided to try using the fan.

That's when my problem started. Sitting in front of the fan as it blew the air into the laptop, I could smell the scent of new electronics entering into my lungs. Whatever causes that "new electronics" scent, I guess that's the clincher, because within 1 hour of using the fan I developed the cool throat, presumably in my trachea, not my esophagus like other users. I immediately decided to stop using the fan within that 1 hour, but the symptom persisted. I also developed what's called a globus, which is that lump in the throat. You can feel it when you're about to cry--that tightening of the trachea. It's been about 1 month and it's still there.

Whatever this fan did to the physiology of my throat, it has given me the cool, minty throat. I don't have it in my mouth or palate like some of the other people making replies. I also do not have any kind of acid reflux, although I do eat a lot of yogurt. (That shouldn't make a difference, though. I've been eating a big helping of yogurt with fruit every night for over 10 years.)

The symptom does seem to get worse in the evening and be mild or nonexistent in the morning, but this might be due to having a good, warm temperature in bed, and also being in a horizontal position.

No idea what to do next. I thought, that due to the speed of the onset of the symptom (within 1 hour!) that it couldn't be illness. It might be nerve damage from some kind of chemical. I saw a reply here that mentioned inhaling pesticides, and more that mentioned vaping, both of which are a similar situation.

I suppose the nerves will eventually repair themselves... Judging from the other replies, it does not seem to be a symptom of something serious. I do not smoke or drink alcohol.

If anything, the fact that most people come here to leave a reply, and then never return to report what has happened, might be a good sign. (They recovered, and this issue became irrelevant to them.)

Hi, I just wanted to update. For the past 3 days, I have been taking a multivitamin and washing down my meals with a glass of water (to account for the possibility of the condition being in my esophagus), and my condition has improved. The cold feeling is mostly gone; it now feels like my throat is just raw, like I have been shouting. The globus is also mostly gone. I don't know if my recovery is coincidental or a result of my adoption of the two actions above.

      Hi again,

I wanted the make a final reply, before I forget about this website. The sensation in my throat cured itself in the end. It's 4 days later from when I made the initial reply above. I still don't know what it was in the end (scared to use that laptop fan again). But, I guess it does heal itself.

      Goodbye.
