Constant, odd , 'cold' feeling in throat and roof of mouth...anyone else have this with reflux?

Hi all

For a long time now I have been experiencing the oddest sensation and I am not sure if it is to do with acid reflux. I have a very cold, almost 'minty' sensation in my mouth all the time. it feels like the sensation you have when you breath in after cleaning your teeth, or after sucking a strong mint. My throat and roof of mouth feels cold - not irritated - just cold and tingly.

I have had problems with reflux in the past and have been on proton pump inhibitors. I am not on a prescription at the moment. i have had an endoscopy and was diagnosed with acute gastritis about ten years ago. I often get heartburn and indigestion.

I have mentioned this top my GP who looks at me like I am mad and says he has never heard of it.

However, I am not imagining it, and wondered if this odd symptom was shared by anyone else with reflux.

I am a lady of a 'certain age' ....smile.....and I have read on the net that this odd sensory change could have something to do with hormonal changes at menopause. Just trying to rule everything out, so would be grateful for any input.

Thanks

Wow! Glad I’m not alone with this. I too have been experiencing the same exact symptoms. I tried explaining it to my boyfriend and he assumed it had something to do with my acid reflux. I haven’t seen the doctor yet, but do have an appointment scheduled. This started happening for about 2 weeks now off and on. I don’t have it all the time. But it is as though I was sucking in a cough drop and have that menthol “cold” sensation on the roof of my mouth and back of throat. Very odd. And what’s even more odd is I noticed it after I tried changing to a vegan diet, so I was drinking a lot of water and eating lots of fruits, particularly blueberries. I don’t know if I over did it with the fruit and ate too much citrus? Nonetheless, it’s very uncomfortable. Not painful, just weird. I’ll post a follow up once I get some answers.

I'm also having these symptoms! I would really like to know what is causing them!!

I have been put on Lansoprazole for silent acid reflux. Sure enough, within a week, the cool, minty sensation had cleared (but my teeth were still bothering me, presumably as a result of the acid). Stopped taking it after 2 weeks, and within 5 days the symptoms came back. So now on a waiting list for a gastro specialist as well as the oral health specialist.

Thank you so much for talking about this. I have been suffering for four weeks now. It feels like I've been sucking on a mint and every time I breathe then it feels cold. It feels like it goes down my esophagus and to the top of my stomach. If anybody has any solutions or ideas I would love to hear them signed struggling mint breathing woman Sheila

Hi Joe this is Sheila and yes it does go away that's the first thing I was going to tell you the good news. I have never had the cold feeling on the roof of my mouth. I've only had it at the back of my throat and in my diaphragm area. so I found something that I think relieves it. i have stayed away from anything that has dairy or Grease and I completely cut it out of my diet almost a hundred percent and I noticed it went away so that's just a suggestion. I hope it gets better for you let me know if you have any questions. I've only experienced the coldness twice in the last 2 months so it's gotten a lot better. thanks

    I have the same symptoms.

I have seen the Dr.  who has never heard of such symptoms.

It is not GERD, at least in my case.

Doing much research i have concluded that there is a possiblity of a problem with eating to much fermented food.

I eat yogurt, and kimchi, and drink a moderate amount of kombucha.

I am wondering if any of you who have these symptoms are also eating fermented or drinking fermented foods?

    TIA

Same Symptoms but not eating fermented foods!  Suffering with nonstop acid reflux for three weeks  (new to me) and perimenopausal.  Those are my only common denominators.  It's weird but nice to not experience burning instead...perhaps it's healing?  Perhaps the nerves are sensing a burn as something cold from being overloaded with so much discomfort for so long????

I have a cold and minty sensation on my gums for over a year off and on. My most recent bout has lasted 4 weeks. I've had horrible GERD for three years with maybe a day or two with less symptoms ( stomach pain, chest/sternal pain, esophageal spasms, gastrtis, SiBO). I have Refractory GERD. I've been to many specialists and also naturopaths. Diets, meds, supplements - nothing helps. They are recommending surgery, but I'm not on board yet. I want to explore MAST cell Activation Syndrome as a possible cause for mine first.

I hope we can all get on the path of healing and recovery!
