Constant, odd , 'cold' feeling in throat and roof of mouth...anyone else have this with reflux?

Hi all

For a long time now I have been experiencing the oddest sensation and I am not sure if it is to do with acid reflux. I have a very cold, almost 'minty' sensation in my mouth all the time. it feels like the sensation you have when you breath in after cleaning your teeth, or after sucking a strong mint. My throat and roof of mouth feels cold - not irritated - just cold and tingly.

I have had problems with reflux in the past and have been on proton pump inhibitors. I am not on a prescription at the moment. i have had an endoscopy and was diagnosed with acute gastritis about ten years ago. I often get heartburn and indigestion.

I have mentioned this top my GP who looks at me like I am mad and says he has never heard of it.

However, I am not imagining it, and wondered if this odd symptom was shared by anyone else with reflux.

I am a lady of a 'certain age' ....smile.....and I have read on the net that this odd sensory change could have something to do with hormonal changes at menopause. Just trying to rule everything out, so would be grateful for any input.

Thanks

Glad that's I'm not alone! I had this experience before (like the last year) and then it's gone, but 3 days ago it came back again and even when it's not a bad feels but it's really bothering me cuz it's unknown! so let's try to collect more information to figure something out cuz I can't even describe it to my Dr!

I'm 22 years old, with no acid reflux ( i got heartburn a very few times when I was a kid, and never had it again), I started following a vegan diet month ago but I think it has nothing to do with it. Recently, my sister diagnosed with MNGIE and it's a rare gene disease, and now I'm overthinking and suspecting myself a lot even when I got no digestive problems! But do you guys thing that might has smth related with?

    (pardon my English)

Well here I am, Mrs Minty Menthol Mouth too! 48, probably hitting pre-menstrual at some point, but no obvious signs as yet as I know of.

I take Topiramate for Migraine provention. I had bad Acid Reflux during 1st pregnancy 14 yrs ago, have been getting it again slightly now with minty, cool sensations, but not always.

It’s the mintiness that’s gets me most! Definitely thought I was imagining it at 1st, but so glad I’m not alone!!

Diet isn’t bad, drink lots of water, take Aloe Vera Gel, Vitamins & Coconut Oil.

Surely after all these years someone would have an answer.....

Glad you are all there though ;D xx

I'm also 48 and can't really describe it to anybody! It Seems like I'm dragging in cold air in without having a mint and a weird tingly sensation in my mouth and tongue.

I’ve been having the feeling you’re talking about for a couple weeks now as well. I don’t think it has anything to do with age or gender because I’m a 15 year old girl. I wasn’t concerned at first and I’m not really now it’s just strange to me because I’ve never experienced it before.

So sorry you have this. I think it’s a reflux thing or pepsin in that area.  Could even be silent reflux. That’s my guess. Hope it doesn’t bother you too much. It’s annoying.

I believe I may be able to help all of you. I had a baby 4 months ago and since then I too have been experiencing this cold minty feeling in my throat. It’s pretty constant, except it’s not there when I sleep. I wake up and there it is. I have seen a gastroenterologist recently who performed an endoscopy and an ENT who went in through my nose. Both of them found nothing out of the ordinary (therefore ruling out GERD/Acid Reflux). I scoured the internet and I was able to find someone who experienced this 3-4 years back and has recovered. She is a patient at the Mayo Clinic and has top notch drs. I I reached out to her and here is what she told me. (Keeping in mind that I have not yet tried any of this but I cannot wait to run it by my Dr because it is the only bit of hope I have been able to find): The cool/minty feeling is fungal. I treated it as a fungus by using Rx Nystatin mouth rinse and swallow some of it after you rinse. I also stopped eating sugar and processed carbs (which feeds fungus) and used baking soda to brush out my mouth (swallow some of that too but not a lot) and ate an alkaline diet to neutralize my stomach. Eat salt, vinegar, do not have sugar or alcohol. Give it at least a week to die off. Pregnancy can lower immune response, you may have been weak after the birth and fungus is opportunistic. She went on to say that she finally had an upper GI that revealed a white substance running down the back of her throat...fungus. It didn’t show up in a culture because not all fungus are tested in a culture. He saw it. She too had every possible test done and came up empty handed. I am hoping that this cures me and I hope that it can help you all too. She also said that many many people have reached out to her over the years with the same symptoms as all of us and they all since gotten better! There is hope! Cheers!

Thanks for information, so kind of you.  Actually the minty thing does not bother me as much as a constant burning in my throat, airway and ears.  I too have tests that did not show much, except for the pepsin test I took (which you can only get in the UK) and that indicated alot of pepsin.  Drugs don't work and it has been months and months of this.  I will consider looking into a fungus thing.  But with so many Drs down my throat and esophagus you would think they would see a trail of fungus at this point.  Not sure what to do anymore and I am very careful with my diet.  Although I do get my sugar, that is a tough one for me!!!  Again thank you for taking the time to write.

You’ll want an antifungal. Nystatin from your Dr or Diflucan for best results. Treat it as oral thrush. As an update: I have discovered the Candida Diet and cleanse and have been doing that for 2 weeks. Lots of avocado, eggs, almonds, coconut oil, chicken, onion, garlic, lemon, apple cider vintage. You can have stevia sweetener. No carbs, sugar, caffeine, alcohol, dairy, fruit.  I’ve added a probiotic, fiber (psyllium fiber husk), and vitamin C. I just checked in with my guru - the survivor of this terribly annoying symptom lol and she says it takes about 2 months of this to cure. I already am going whole days where I don’t feel the cool/minty/burning at all! I hope this helps me and you guys. Make sure to rest plenty as well!

Thank you so very much. I am recovering from Covid-19, coronavirus. I'm almost all better, but...I have a sore throat which, well, the soreness is getting a bit better, however I have the very same minty, menthol, cold feeling that everyone is describing. It began while I was very sick in March. I thought it was just a viral related weird sore throat, because so many of the symptoms while sick were weird, ones I've never experienced before. I called the Dr. but I did not mention the minty stuff, I just summed it up as a sore throat. She said that most likely I was still shaking off the covid-19 symptoms, she is seeing some people taking up to 8 weeks getting rid of their last symptoms, however maybe a opportunistic bacteria is the cause, so try antibiotics..can't hurt (and of course she added: but remember, if it is the covid-19 symptoms, the antibiotics won't help). Ok, so on the antibiotics for 2 days, 8 to go. Now I find this forum. And yes, I do have white lines of something going down the back of my throat. I assumed it was infection, because in the past I have gotten white spots on my tonsils and back of throat when sick with sore throats. This is somewhat different looking, but again, I assumed infection...but from bacteria. I've copied your post to show the Dr. And it's very difficult, I can't visit in person. It's a teleconference. I had to hold my phone camera aimed at my throat and a flash light. I live in New York State, right outside the NYC. I don't know when I'll be able see her in person. Guess I'll wait till the antibiotics are gone, so the question of bacteria being the possible cause will be answered. Then I will be able to bring up fungus as the source. I am so happy to have a plausible reason for this. I also found 2 other people, in the UK, recovering from Covid-10 who have also mentioned the same minty/menthol breathing thing (they were interviewed in a newspaper regarding their weird symptoms). Discovering your post, the fungus diagnosis, well, I feel relieved to have found it! Thank you!!

Thank you for this. I have been looking for a glimmer of hope of what this could be. It's been over a year now dealing with this without much help from family dr or endocrinologist . I will be able to show this to her. Maybe its a start to healing this once an.d for all.

Hi, you have very similar symptoms to me. i was poorly late March with very bad sore throat glands up etc and ive not really recovered. DR puts it down to Covid 19 and antibiotics have had no effect.

Im tired all the time but the worst symptom is the constant icey feeling at the back of my throat and tongue. my ears ache constantly and the lymph nodes in my neck and really uncomfortable .

      are you any better ?

Hi. Well, it was not a fungal infection. I was able to see the doctor in person. Culture was taken, it was negative. My doctor is treating my lingering sore throat, and inflamed bronchial tubes as "Residual Reactive Airway Disease" caused by an overactive immune system which was cause by Covid-19.

Concerning the cold, minty menthol feeling....she said "I have no idea what that's all about."

To address the inflammation in my bronchial tubes, nasal passages I was prescribed a Pulmicort inhaler, steroids. To address the inflamed sore throat and my complaint of the cold minty menthol thing (which she's never heard of) I was prescribed Magic Mouthwash. This mouthwash did provide temporary relief from the discomfort of the menthol thing, because it has lidocaine in it, so it numbed my mouth for a while. It also has nystatin in it, just in case the culture missed the thrush or other fungal infection, along with benedryl to help in calming the immune system down. The mouthwash lasted 1 month, so it's long gone. There were no lasting effects from the mouthwash.

Interesting and annoying, the cold minty menthol feeling has evolved. It is now burning -- my tongue, my upper gums, and the roof of my mouth. Also there is a very nasty chemical taste on the back of my tongue. All of the burning and the nasty taste are minimal (sometimes completely absent) when I wake up in the morning. Then within an hour the burning begins. Everything burns, or just a part and then it moves from place to place. That's when I started searching online again!

I found that "Burning Mouth Syndrome"is a thing, studied by doctors and people are treated by doctors for it (but most say the treatments are not successful). Joined a group on facebook - The New Burning Mouth Support Group. Wow!! This entire mouth adventure is shared by many people. For many..it started with a Cold Minty Menthol feeling/taste and then evolved into burning. I couldn't believe it. It is wonderful. Doesn't make me feel any better, but it's full of good information and reading the comments of people that have the EXACT SAME SYMPTOMS is comforting.

      So, reseach Burning Mouth Syndrome.

I end with my current guess - the disruption to our pain receptors and taste/smell receptors is due to nerve damage or aggravation. In my case, I know Covid-19 caused it somehow - was it nerve damage from my immune system being super charged? OR could stress be involved somehow? Good luck, feel better soon!

i also have been diagnosed with fungas candadias. it sounds exactly like my situation.. i took fluconazole and it helped but only when i was on the drug. after going off of the drug it came back. i think i will try your method above.. i have a feeling that i have ulcers and acid is leaking into my back at night when i sleep causing sleeping problems and nerve shocks also...

i used to use hydrogen peroxide in my mouth and i think some of it went into my throat and mixed with the GERDS acid and produced a hole in my esaphagaf and the acid went down my back and caused nerve damage..
