Constant, odd , 'cold' feeling in throat and roof of mouth...anyone else have this with reflux?

Hi all

For a long time now I have been experiencing the oddest sensation and I am not sure if it is to do with acid reflux. I have a very cold, almost 'minty' sensation in my mouth all the time. it feels like the sensation you have when you breath in after cleaning your teeth, or after sucking a strong mint. My throat and roof of mouth feels cold - not irritated - just cold and tingly.

I have had problems with reflux in the past and have been on proton pump inhibitors. I am not on a prescription at the moment. i have had an endoscopy and was diagnosed with acute gastritis about ten years ago. I often get heartburn and indigestion.

I have mentioned this top my GP who looks at me like I am mad and says he has never heard of it.

However, I am not imagining it, and wondered if this odd symptom was shared by anyone else with reflux.

I am a lady of a 'certain age' ....smile.....and I have read on the net that this odd sensory change could have something to do with hormonal changes at menopause. Just trying to rule everything out, so would be grateful for any input.

Thanks

Okay so I took my own advice for about a month. I cut out all carbs, alcohol, caffeine and dairy (except Kefir and plain Greek yogurt) and while I did feel better, and even went 2 whole days without feelin the sensation it still wasn’t gone.  The person who gave me this advice said it took her 2 months to get rid of it entirely but in the interim I was sent to the allergist by my GP to see if they could help figure it out and I found out I have developed a dairy allergy. So now I’m wondering if it’s dairy causing this or allergies in general and I am going to try cutting out all dairy including kefir and yogurt and I will get back with you all. Sorry if this doesn’t apply to you but we’re all looking for answers for the same thing and I’m trying EVERYTHING. I’m sick of this feeling and I will be sharing everything i find out with you all. I’m going on month 5 of this. Also, I had a stool culture done to check for bacteria in my gut but I haven’t gotten those results yet. Cheers.

Hi Danielle -see my reply to this thread below..for me it was allergies..but not dairy. Gluten was the culprit x

Danielle - any updates? The one thing I find weird about this is while im concerned as it's out of the norm. It doesn't both me .... if anything it's super nice as I feel minty fresh!! So i'm wondering if this is the same thing when people are complaining and stating they got to get rid of it. But my symptoms are the same as everything on this thread and started about 4 days ago after i recovered from being sick in bed for 3 days with 102 temperature. Ever since i got better I feel this minty feeling.

till have no idea what's causing this. I've been dealing with it for over a year now. I have joined a secret facebook group called “menthol mouth sensation” run by a man named Bruce. You can join too if you'd like support. It's interesting to me that this also started for you after being sick, I.e. after your immune system was down because that’s how it started for me, after giving birth and being in the hospital. Anyway, like you I’m not so worried about it anymore but still would love to end the mystery and get a cure! I’m pretty sure I’m not going to die from it as I’ve had plenty of tests run and they’ve all come back normal. But that’s the annoying part though, isn’t it?! Grateful for overall good health and just moving on with my life now! Maybe it will resolve itself in time. Cheers.

I am so shocked to see this - I've been experiencing this for about two weeks now. I am a 54 post-menopausal woman, so I'm not sure if that is a connection. I still have my sense of smell and taste - but just imagine eating every meal IMMEDIATELY after brushing your teeth with a super minty toothpaste. That's what it feels like. I don't mind so much the "just-brushed" feeling in between meals, but it's constant. Weird.

This thread is really interesting.. I'm also having the minty menthol cold feeling in my throat.. even worse when breathing in. Reading through the comments I have a few things in common with some people.. I also have fibromyalgia and went vegan this past month.. so maybe one of those could be related? Or just a coincidence I dont know lol.. I'm a 23 year old women and I see theres various ages and both men and women on this threat. I took omeprazole back in high school for GERD but havent in years because dont have heartburn much and I contracted C. Diff back in high school which apparently the PPI drug omeprazole played a part in causing because it reduces stomach acid so I wont take any of those drugs again. Isn't so much heartburn feeling though.. more cool minty weird than burning acid if that makes sense. Wild no one has a clear answer even after all these years.. I saw the fungal comments and heartburn comments but who knows.. I'm glad I'm not alone though because it's weird and dont think Ive experienced this before now

I am so glad I'm not the only one dealing with this menthol/minty sensation. Mine started about a week ago, and it isn't seeming to go away. I am a female, 21, and I suffer from GERD. I noticed mine started after chewing "Big Red" cinnamon gum quite a bit, and it got worse when I continued chewing, but it's been over 4 days since my last piece and the sensation is only getting stronger. I have absolutely no idea what could be causing it. I've tried vigorously brushing my teeth, tongue, roof of mouth, etc. and I've tried taking antihistamines in case it was an allergic reaction to the gum. I am on a prescription for acid reflux, but it also hasn't seemed to help. Does anyone else deal with the flavor of food changing and tasting like you just brushed your teeth? So tired of this feeling!

Yes! I quit smoking in August and thought the semi-recent detest of my favourite beer was because my "taste buds were coming back", but I was really shocked!

I remember finding this site when I was struggling with "mint mouth" in 2017. At the time I had no answers - and as dramatic as it may sound - the whole thing was making me feel desperate. It was like having tinitus in my mouth and throat - and the anxiety it caused was unreal . I also felt exhausted all the time with aches in every muscle. Basically it was as though I was falling apart. The Dr's simply put it down to stress...but somehow that never felt right. In 2017 I had the "mint mouth" for six months, then it disappeared. Only to come back again this year. I was absolutely devastated - particularly as all the other symptoms were still as bad as if not worse than before. I tried everything. Early nights, exercise, relaxation techniques, tums, avoiding caffeine, alcohol, mint flavours -but nothing worked. I also seemed to have developed IBS by this point. I was at a real low. But then...I cut out gluten. And everything changed. Suddenly I felt alert, awake, alive. The tingling in my mouth disappeared. Over two weeks all my IBS syptoms vanished. It has now been two months without gluten and I have lost a stone in weight, all my joint aches are gone and I have had no mint mouth since the day I cut gluten out. I have come back to this forum specifically to post just in case it helps anyone. I truly hope it does xxx

I should also add that I found my " mint mouth" once flared up could be triggered by smells (Yankee candles did it -so did plug-ins) as well. It would always disappear overnight and then creep back up on me during the course of the day. I recommend trying a bland, lactose and gluten free diet for a couple of weeks to let your system recover. Go for GF porridge oats and maple syrup (avoid honey) and easy to digest bland foods such as chicken and rice. Then slowly re-introduce lactose and other harder to digest foods such as red meats/tomatoes/ chocolate etc over the course of time whilst avoiding gluten altogether. It has to be worth a shot...and it has 100% changed my life. Best of luck and hope it works for you, too xxx
