Constant, odd , 'cold' feeling in throat and roof of mouth...anyone else have this with reflux?

Hi all
For a long time now I have been experiencing the oddest sensation and I am not sure if it is to do with acid reflux. I have a very cold, almost 'minty' sensation in my mouth all the time. it feels like the sensation you have when you breath in after cleaning your teeth, or after sucking a strong mint. My throat and roof of mouth feels cold - not irritated - just cold and tingly.
I have had problems with reflux in the past and have been on proton pump inhibitors. I am not on a prescription at the moment. i have had an endoscopy and was diagnosed with acute gastritis about ten years ago. I often get heartburn and indigestion.
I have mentioned this top my GP who looks at me like I am mad and says he has never heard of it.
However, I am not imagining it, and wondered if this odd symptom was shared by anyone else with reflux.
I am a lady of a 'certain age' .........and I have read on the net that this odd sensory change could have something to do with hormonal changes at menopause. Just trying to rule everything out, so would be grateful for any input.
Thanks

It's crazy to me how many of us have experienced this exact same thing and doctors have never heard of it.
I have had it for about 3 weeks straight. And I HATE mint, so it was really upsetting me. I quit one of the pills I was on, changed toothpaste, nothing worked.
So I came here and decided maybe it's acid reflux (though I have no other symptoms of that). I'm on my second day of Prevacid and the mint has gone away!!! 😃))

I've had Gerd in the past . It doesn't always rear its ugly head just once in awhile . Just recently I've had the cold sensation in my throat , and roof of my mouth ... No minty just cold . It seems this year i've been more susceptible to allergies . Whereas in years past I never had that issue . going to limit my alcohol intake , and try apple cider vinegar ..

I am a 45 year old male. I hadn't had GERDS that I knew of, just some heartburn recently that suddenly turned into a constant cold throat sensation. Everytime I breathe in I feel it on the back of my throat like what it feels like when you wake up after sleeping with your mouth open. My doctor put me on Omeprazole 20mg and then up it to 40. Has done nothing for it. Its worse at night and sometimes really bad but always there. Going on 3 months now. I'm desperate.

I started having a cold sensation in my chest a few months back. I couldn't figure out what was causing it and it became even more puzzling because it moved. Some days it was in my upper chest, some days it moved up to my throat and eventually to the back of my mouth. Over the past several weeks I finally realized that the sensation started when I was hungry. I have a bad habit of staying at my desk and working instead of stepping away to eat. And I was also experiencing a very suppressed appetite. I just found out that my saliva has also become acidic to the point that I need to have a tooth extracted. All this prompted a change in diet (I was never a very healthy eater) so now I'm having meat and vegetables at every meal. While researching about saliva PH I came across an article saying that mineral deficiency can cause acidic saliva. Several days ago, I started to take Magnesium and just two days ago I started to take a trace minerals supplement. As of today, I am getting almost no cold sensation even though I became quite hungry. It's too soon to say if either the Magnesium or the trace mineral supplement have cleared up the cold sensation, but I'm feeling hopeful.

hello everyone,
i have been going through the same problem for quite a while (7-8 months) .. i was doing a weight loss diet which required me to alter my food habits .. so i initially thought that the coldness in the mouth is a reaction to the change in my diet well after going along with it i realized that the cold feeling in the mouth is increasing with time and there could be something else that causing it .
i was doing alot of search online looking for threads that can help me connect to some info as to why this could be happening.. but i couldnt find any ..i just found this discussion form few days back and was reading about other people suggestions as to what this could be . I have seen lot of people write it could be cause of acid reflux .
i recently went for a dental check up ...and my docter explained this to me that my tooth enamel is weakening ( enamel erosion ) there are many reasons to why this can happen .
1.the most common reason is poor brushing technique which sadly was one of the reason for my weakened enamel i was brushing my teeth hard .
2.enjoying acidic foods & alcohol/soda / energy drink - in my case i was having diet cola drink ..which has lot of sugar and it amplifies the bacteria in the mouth to spread faster.
3.Tooth grinding which can can happen during sleep and you might not get to know that u r grinding the teeths while sleeping. ( i am taking caution for this by using a mouth guard at night )
all these above reason have led to a gum infection in my mouth and a weakened the tooth enamel which is supposively the cause for the cold feeling in the mouth .the mouth remains cold as if i have had mint. I would highly recommend to get a dental check up .
my treatment is still going on and it will continue for week ..but its been two days since i am using a sensitivety tooth paste and some oral medicine and brushing my teeth very gently the right way .Its has brought down the uneasiness of my mouth alot i wanted to post my experience here to create awareness as acid reflux could be or not the reason for this problem for you .It very well can be a tooth infection.I will update once my treatment is complete.
wish you goodluck in finding the reason and with the treatment .

Hi all,
First of all, thanks to everyone for keeping this thread alive. It feels good when you are not alone.
I have been experiencing this recently too. On researching a lot, I came to know it could be because of "scalloped tongue". So, I would request everyone to examine your tongue in front of the mirror and check if the tongue looks scalloped (you can search Google for reference pictures). In my case it actually was.
Now, there could be multiple reasons for this. The following link is the best that I could find:
Hope this helps!
Stay well!

I know it sounds weird but I have the same problem and I could not find any answers on internet so I search among traditional Iranian medical science and I found an interesting answers that I decided to share with U guys here. drinking cold water is a very bad thing among eastern science and they say that it cause various kinds of illnesses, like overweight & ...and one of them is the situation that the your head get cold, and one of its symptoms is that you feel cold in your mouth. you can give it a try

I've been getting the cold feeling in the roof of my mouth and in my throat too. I had it for several weeks about 4 years ago, and am having it again now. I was diagnosed with lupus a few years back. i never mentioned this to my PCP or rhumie, but I'm wondering if it has to do with digestive issues, as I've had those off and on for the past several years. has anyone who commented before me gotten a diagnosis?

Ok. So, i have had this off and on for years, but it has been pretty constant the past week this time. its nit like it is painful or anything, but it sure is weird. It's like there is an Altoid stuck at the back of my throat, its that weird cold feeling there like something minty is slowly sliding down my throat, yet it not actually moving anywhere. I sure hope we find answers about thus soon. The one negative association I can say with this is it is almost like that gross cold feeling you get before you start throwing up, after drinking too much.
