Constant, odd , 'cold' feeling in throat and roof of mouth...anyone else have this with reflux?

Hi all

For a long time now I have been experiencing the oddest sensation and I am not sure if it is to do with acid reflux. I have a very cold, almost 'minty' sensation in my mouth all the time. it feels like the sensation you have when you breath in after cleaning your teeth, or after sucking a strong mint. My throat and roof of mouth feels cold - not irritated - just cold and tingly.

I have had problems with reflux in the past and have been on proton pump inhibitors. I am not on a prescription at the moment. i have had an endoscopy and was diagnosed with acute gastritis about ten years ago. I often get heartburn and indigestion.

I have mentioned this top my GP who looks at me like I am mad and says he has never heard of it.

However, I am not imagining it, and wondered if this odd symptom was shared by anyone else with reflux.

I am a lady of a 'certain age' ....smile.....and I have read on the net that this odd sensory change could have something to do with hormonal changes at menopause. Just trying to rule everything out, so would be grateful for any input.

Thanks

I have this as well for about a month now and its rather irritating. I mostly feel it when I breathe. I read someone else's post saying its a fungal issue and it feeds on sugar. I do have a bad habit of eating sweets so I'm wondering if anyone else thinks this could be the answer. It does seems worse after being sick for three days. I thought taking turmeric was the culprit but I haven't taken it in days now. I'm really hoping someone will know something to help us all.

    Hi

I suffer acid reflux been given Lansoprazole and for the past few weeks when I breathe in I feel this cold air at the back of my throat like I've had an extra strong mint it's worrying me because I don't know what's causing it, Does anyone got any ideas please?

To get an appointment with my GP takes months you have to book an appointment online through Doctor Link it's bludey ridiculous you can't ring the surgery unless it's urgent only. I would like to take a natural remedy as sick of taking prescribed tablets? Any advice would be great thankyou

I also get the same minty feeling in my mouth. i think its because of acid reflux.. from personal experiments i have found that taking these supplements helps:

    • zinc carnosine - good for gastritis as well
    • digestive enzymes after meal
    • and as strange as this sounds.. i am also taking Heather tummy tamer.. which is enteric coated peppermint capsules.

i have not completely eliminated the issue but have put it under control. Your mileage may vary

i ate a very clean diet for awhile as part of addressing health challenges and I now experience the minty sensation when I eat sugar, rice, bread, etc, especially before bed so I see it as carb/fungus related

    Hi,

I am Sam 35 years old male I experienced this exact feeling for almost a month now and there is no explanation!

HOWEVER.. I picked up a habit I am not sure if it's connected to this or not but I only felt that once I started to do it so I have a theory..

When I started to drink sugary alcoholic drinks and eat spicy / minty food it had that effect..

I my breath is always cold unless I drink which turns into a very hot one! I feel like a dragon or something lol

but the next morning it's back to cold minty breath..

so I am not sure how accurate that is I am not a professional but if anyone actually knows what is going on or have another theory please don't be shy and share.

    Thanks..

    hi everyone

Im getting this cold feeling a few months now . Its icy cold in my throat and chest but im getting a lot of noises in my stomach too, so I have thought it may be acid. Ive not gone to my doctor but I am intending on it now. The replies on here are very informative and helpful.

I have given up meat and I have a loose tooth that needs to be removed Someone mentioned about that could cause it.

what i experience though is this feeling like i havent got enough selivia to swallow and its horrid when it happens I panic as though I cant swallow but then of course I do Its causing my anxiety worse and I feel I have to take deep breaths

I feel it could be any of the concerns on this chat, Fungal, gluten, magnesium etc

I will keep following and updating if I get any answers too

i also get a fresh minty feeling in my throat and chest area, no pain just a strange icy feeling. I have been back and forward to the doctors and tried omeprazole and lansoprapole because they suspect acid reflux, i have had the gurgling stomach and burping abit more often but other than that theres no pain just this odd minty sensation. The tablets seem to have no affect. Before all this i have never suffered with heartburn or indegestion. I am 29 years old female. Does anyone have any answers ?

I am so pleased to have found this discussion thread. I'm waiting for an appointment with an oral health specialist after having this same symptom - minty, cold, kind of menthol sensation (not really taste - when I think about it, it doesn't really taste minty) in my mouth for two months.

I have absolutely no other symptoms of any kind of reflux, but willing to give something like Gaviscon a try in case it is acid in my mouth.

It's starting to affect my teeth - I'm conscious of grinding them and can sometimes feel the nerves in them. Went to the dentist and he says my teeth and gums are in perfect health, so not that.

The most irritating thing is how much it's affecting my appetite, because I just don't fancy anything to eat because of the constant sensation. And if I'm truly honest I really miss fancying a glass of wine or pint of beer, because that's who I am. Since this started two months ago, I just haven't been me at all. I love my food and drink - but eat healthily. I've lost weight - but I'd rather be half a stone heavier and a happier me.

Will update once I've seen the specialist, but reading through these posts, it seems no one really knows what it is. Also holding out hope from the posts above that it won't last forever, but for now it is slowly turning me mad.... 😡😥

So have you found out what is it abou?

I have been having constant cold and minty sensation from throat to tongue and even nose for nearly 2 years. I am feeling very

      irritated. What is wrong actually?

      Does anyone know?

I'm a 55 yr old male that has been having this minty mouth thing for last four weeks now, feels very strange. Also noticed my mouth and saliva becoming very dry this last week and like some past members been almost struggling to swallow. It is a very wierd sensation which sort of feels like you have continuosly brushed your teeth ot eaten a packet of extra strong mints, also find my taste has declined and sort of makes eating not enjoyable.

Not sure if its linked but I had a sinus infection recently which took months to clear and ive had a couple of bad colds immediately afterwards which is when it started. I think my sinus is linked to a tooth problem, upper rear molar which is not 100%. Dentist checked tooth , electrically for nerves etc and he said its fine, took x ray as well. Because of sinus issue he referred me to ent specialist , which im seeing next week. I know he says tooth is fine but i get a niggling ache from it most of the time, just background tooth gnawing but if i push it in a certain way i can definitely feel irritation. i think this is causing my sinus infection to re occur and i reckon tooth needs to come out to be sure.

im also going to mention this minty thing to doctor tomorrow and ask for full blood test to see if we can rule out minerals, iron etc etc.

i have a good diet, not overweight but as with all aging peeps do get indigestion if i eat the wrong thing. mostly eat veg but have fish and meat also with dairy but no real quantity of anything. Porridge every morning for breakfast . Eat hardly any sugar or soft drinks, alcohol at most couple units per week.

As others have said its very odd sensation. I have also changed tooth paste, toothbrush, brushed, not brushed over last couple of weeks but that all seems to make no difference.

i'm totally baffled by this so ill update on what my findings are this coming week but will be sure to mention the fungal things etc that others have.

Update - went to doctors today on unrelated issue and brought up cold minty mouth issues. Doctor never heard of anything like it, isnt it odd when there are complete forums of people experiencing this phenomena but doctors have never heard of it.

Anyway he did make a sensible comment. My main issue for seeing the ent consultant next week is sinus infections.

i currently have the back end of an infection and its still hanging around. The doctors has recommended that i use beconase or similar steroid based spray to dry up sinuses and allow air etc to circulate. ive used it previously and it did work. He thinks that my sinus issue is affecting my olefactory senses to the brain. i bought s9me beconase today and ill keep post updated. if it works its either going to be coincidental timing or its the remedy. For many people you can have sinus infection without totally knowing it.

I have a sinus infection now and have same icy cold feeling in my throat. It's driving me crazy!!! Did the steroid spray clear this up for you??? They started me on flonase, along with the antibiotics. I am not sleeping well due to the nagging feeling.
