Constant, odd , 'cold' feeling in throat and roof of mouth...anyone else have this with reflux?

Hi all

For a long time now I have been experiencing the oddest sensation and I am not sure if it is to do with acid reflux. I have a very cold, almost 'minty' sensation in my mouth all the time. it feels like the sensation you have when you breath in after cleaning your teeth, or after sucking a strong mint. My throat and roof of mouth feels cold - not irritated - just cold and tingly.

I have had problems with reflux in the past and have been on proton pump inhibitors. I am not on a prescription at the moment. i have had an endoscopy and was diagnosed with acute gastritis about ten years ago. I often get heartburn and indigestion.

I have mentioned this top my GP who looks at me like I am mad and says he has never heard of it.

However, I am not imagining it, and wondered if this odd symptom was shared by anyone else with reflux.

I am a lady of a 'certain age' ....smile.....and I have read on the net that this odd sensory change could have something to do with hormonal changes at menopause. Just trying to rule everything out, so would be grateful for any input.

Thanks

Go to chemist, you dont need a prescription , and buy bottle of Beconase hayfever relief nasal spray, will be about £9.. Dont worry about not having hayfever. Follow the instructions on the bottle, you will probably need the big bottle 160 sprays as you need to take it as dircted for about a month. Its pretty harmless stuff but it will dry out and clear any nasal, sinus issues that you may or may not be aware of, you literally can do no harm. Take it for the month and see how you feel. if it makes no difference you have lost nothing BUT you may be surprised. I know its clutching at straws but you never know. I think its what is causing the issue as all the olefactory is linked to the brain through your nose, not your tongue. Good Luck

Hi, I was having this same issue. A phantom menthol like sensation/taste. But it did not interfere with my actual taste-buds. While the many doctors I saw did not know what it was, one (after much time/bloodwork/MRI's etc) was able to draw a conclusion. I had a Thiamine deficiency (the cause of still unknown) I'm a young, healthy guy. A thiamine deficiency can cause nerve inflammation, one of your cranial nerves goes to your tongue. I have been on B1/Thiamine supplement for over a month and the taste has not returned.

Two ENT's treated what they suspected was GERD/Acid Reflux. I was on Dexilant, Pantoprozol, and Prilosec at different times. This had absolutely no impact on this odd taste/sensation.

Oral sensory nerve damage can result in phantom taste or phantom pain sensations. While sick with Covid-19 I developed the minty menthol taste/sensation. That has changed, it evolved into a burning feeling. My tongue, roof of mouth, upper gums, inner upper and lower lips. For a few days I tasted a nasty chemical on the back of my tongue. Luckily that didn't last long, but it made me miss the more pleasant minty sensation. While reading the many covid-19 posts on some covid groups/discussions, I have seen quite a few people that had this cold/minty feeling develop while sick, just like me. Tomorrow I have an appointment with DR. Number 3, an ENT who is also the chief of the ENT department in the hospital in my area, one of the many NYC area hospitals. Dr. Number 2 has referred me to him specifically because he has been seeing many covid-19 recovering patients that have lingering weird symptoms, like weird oral tastes and sensations. If you look up "Burning Mouth Syndrome" you will find that many of the folks who suffer from this had it begin with the minty menthol thing. The cranial nerve Michael has mentioned can be damaged by many different things, from vitamin problems to viruses to your own immune system being in overdrive (which causes tons of problems!), to dental work. The type of damage and the severity of the damage can both vary also. This is a lot of new knowledge for me to take in, but I am learning. In the case of covid-19, Drs have even figured out where the virus entered the body and how it traveled to that cranial nerve. Amazing. Also of note is that drs trying to calm the overactive immune system tell you to take antacid, specifically Pepcid AC (brand name), or the generic version - famotidine because it also acts as a histamine suppressor, it's not just for acid reflux - who knew?! So famotidine, and also benedryl will help in the attempt to calm a hyperactive immune system, which will help cut down on inflammation which may be damaging that nerve! A prescription for clonapin or something similare is often given, anti anxiety and anti convulsive medications, they are super helpful in calming the immune system so it stops attacking the body, including that cranial nerve. I've learned a lot since my first post here a few months ago, and thinking maybe I had Thrush. I'll update again if I get any new additional info tomorrow from the ENT.

ive been experiencing this as well, so strange! its like it goes away over night as well and will go away for the first half hour of waking up then it just comes back, ive had it on and off for the past 2 weeks, but now it seems to be here everyday, it is soooo annoying! I have anxiety as it as and i wasnt sure if it was to do with being anxious or not! but now ive read over these comments maybe not? the feeling is in my throat and upper mouth and occasionally in my chest, it just feels very cold, and sometimes i can also feel it in my nose, all my airways just feel uncomfortably cold! I can also feel throbbing as well on the roof of my mouth, its all a bit strange, no one seems to know what it is, if anyone finds out please let me know!

Exactly my symptoms to a tee, Phoebe. I've now been on Lansoprazole for 2 months and it has really helped. Got another GP appointment this week and specialist in 2 weeks to see if I need to continue on it, but all signs point to silent acid reflux.

My GP wasn't convinced at first when I went back for a second time and told her lots of people on this forum had the same symptoms and that was the issue that mostly struck a chord, but she prescribed me Lansoprazole nevertheless and there was definitely an improvement after a week.

      Good luck x

How long did it last for all of you? what was the diagnosis? My docotor subscribed pepcid as he said it was possibly due to stomache acid. But everyone ive spoken to has never heard of this happening =( PLEASE HELP LOL any advice is appreciated.

      hi everyone,

I am experiencing the same symptoms. A strange cold feeling at the back of my throat and roof of my mouth that gets worse throughout the day. Did you get a diagnosis or find a treatment?

Hi. What with everything that's going on, my appointment with the oral specialist was cancelled. But I remain in Lansoprazole for silent acid reflux which seems to be working. Still waiting for a camera down my oesophagus - again all such appointments are on hold - but for now the self-diagnosis and agreement from GP of silent acid reflux seems to be the case.

I've had this for just over a year now. I was given Beconase nasal spray to try recently. It takes four weeks before it starts working (if It's going to). It hasn't worked... I've been taking Omeprazole since 2006, and also take antacids for nausea when required. It's strange isn't it that no one seems to have a definitive answer or cure.

I am experiencing the same thing and i have GERD. Just avoid food that trigger acid and see if that helps. i was on Nexium and i think that helped but the side effects were horrible for me so i decided to try just eating the right foods. it has eased a bit but i think it will take some time.
