constant pain under the ribs (on the right side ..in the back)

I am experiencing this pain under my ribs, on the right side and more towards my back than in the front..for about three months now and I have to take Ibuprofen almost every day

This pain is just annoying as its not as bad to prevent me from moving or do stuff, but it is very upsetting to have to endure it every day.

I am 29 years old (woman).

I went to the doctor first in February when he tested my blood. The result came back normal (he said he tested for infections). After that I went again and he gave me an X-ray in my abdominal area..well that one came back normal too.

Now, last week (30th of May) he said he would send me through the post a form or something like that.. to go with it and have an ultrasound. I waited now a week and I cant wait to receive it already as I want to see if they will see something at the Echo scan.

I would have wanted the ultrasound taken first if you ask me..as I suspect it might be something like a kidney stone..or something like that..?

I only have this pain in my back, somewhere under my ribs (and on the right side), only when I stand.

I feel better when sitting down or lying. I am thankful for that at least..I suppose it could be worse ..so I get some break from this.

The doctor as I see him is clueless and he said that if we don't find anything after all these tests..he might just blame it on a muscle that was pulled or something..

I mean..this is ridiculous as basically it would be just a guess..even leaving it like that..

what if in time it affects me more with some other consequences?

I am very concerned already and tired with this pain.

Please I would like to know your opinions about this.

I must add that I have no other symptoms..no swellings or other problems. Just this pain every day and is constant and annoying and I just want to know what it is already to treat it and get over with my life.

I have been having the same issue since February.....I have also had all of the tests mentioned above and been told it could just be a muscle strain? The doctors seem clueless. I also run daily which actually makes me feel better. Are any of you taking hormones? I am 47. I am now starting to have major bloating and uncomfortable after eating. I am in shape and not overweight? What could it be?

      Hi Tanya,

Any luck being diagnosed? I'm having the same symptoms for the past 6 weeks. I feel like I'm going crazy.

Also having the EXACT same symptoms....33 year old male. It's been off and on for about 6 months. Had CT scan and blood/urine test and the docs say that everthing is normal.. there's definitley something going on cause my pain level is about a constant 7. Seems to last about a month then goes away for a while. My only self-diagnosed idea is that it's from too much alcohol consumption?? I drink about 3 glasses of red wine or beer, 5 days a week. More on the weekends. So I'm doing a 1 month INTENSE detox to see if that helps. Juicing greens, cut out all sugar, dairy, greasy foods, "bad" starch, and sticking to lean meats, beans, nuts, raw veggies, dark berries and water ONLY. I'll keep you all posted and let me know what you find!!

How did you get on with the intense detox?

I have the same symptoms mainly after a weekend.

Also the day after a run it's real bad.

Same symptoms, I'm 41 male and have been dealing with this for three years. All blood work and ultra scans came back normal. Still no answer, of course I went online and was convinced that I have liver problems but the tests have all been fine with that. I am a wine/bear drinker 5-6 days a week and only a few days a week now but still worry about that. It's funny I feel like if I don't thing about the pain it goes away, I don't know. My doctor says it might be in my exoskeleton????

I've been having the same pain for 2 years! It's more of an aggravating pain like stitch and burning sensation! I've had bloods done they came back normal. Scan on my kidney that was ok! The pain don't wake me up at night and I can't say when it's worse. I've got a hospital appointment on Wednesday so hopefully they can shed some light on it.

Is your healthy diet helping you now?  I'll be doing the same thing--back on my healthy diet.

I wish I could give you an answer that would bring you some hope.  I've been going through this for over 3 years now.  Same pain, always right sided. Been told its everything from gas to hydronephrosis.  I never get the same answer but it's always the same pain. Been through hundreds of test. Now I'm forcing my doctors and when I say doctors, I mean doctors.  I have a team now. (Two urologist ,1 neurologist, 1 general one pain specialist and 1 nephrologist. ) to look at a rare disease called LPHS.

I don't know if we have anything in common other then the pain but I know what that alone is like. To go in and tell them your in pain,  enough pain to pull you from your day to the doctors or hospital and not get answers.

I'm a 46 year old female, Hispanic from Puerto Rico. I had been having the exact pain you and many others had mentioned. At the second day I notice some blood in my urine. And it's been almost a year I see the protein coming out through my urine. It seems I have 4 out of 5 symptoms. Haven't gone to the doctor yet. But this forum, specially your input, had been such a help. That's why, and per your information (LPHS) I wanted to share what I found in the web.

What are the symptoms for loin pain haematuria?

      • Severe loin pain

      • Blood in the urine

      • Low-grade fever

      • Loin tenderness

      • Excess protein in urine

      Above symptoms taken from:

Other useful pages I found, for my own reference, and here for you:

I am horrified to read of so many people with this pain. May God bless you all.

      Hi Cybil,

Have you seen any relief since you posted your note here a year ago?  I hope so.  I'm wondering if you would be comfortable listing some of your symptoms.  Is it just pain or do you have anything else?  I have just pain, no other symptoms. My pain started out feeling like a stitch in my right side and was annoying but didn't interfere with my daily routine for the first four months or so.  But then it started getting worse... and worse... and worse!  When the pain was minor I had tests done: Ultrasounds, CT  Scan, Bloodwork, Urine, all that and everything came back normal.  Tried to get into a Pain Management Clinic but they denied me because my pain is in my abdomen ;(

My GP sent me to a gastroenterologist even though I had no symptoms in my bowels.  They did a scope and colonoscopy and found nothing.  My GP then shrugged on my follow up.  Since she wasn't helpful, I went to another GP and finally got in to some specialists like a Rheumotologsist, Internal Medicine doc, Nephrologist because my kidneys are producing a high level of protein, which they say is not high enough to be a concern, but higer than normal.  So more tests were done, another CT, and still everything is fine.  My pain is constant, and gets worse with movement, and is especially excruciating sitting upright.  (Imagine, not having the energy to stand, but sitting is worse!)  So I can't work now, and I spend my days in a laying position, not moving, as much as possible, which is not a life, but the only way to keep the pain at a bearable level.  I've been put on Pregabalin which is usually used to treat Fibromayalgia... as it's a theory only.  Still waiting for a neurologist appointiment which is hard to get if you're not dying,

Is anything I'm describing similar to you?  I need to know that I'm not crazy... it's been 21 months of this now, and the pain is only getting worse.

I'm almost positive my symptoms (and possibly yours) is from kidney stones. I'm seeing a doc tomorrow and will keep you posted. My diet consisted of high amounts of caffeine, protein, alcohol, sodium, and not nearly enough water.

Hi, I'm curious if you ended up with kidney stone(s)? I'm having same pain and I'm convinced it's kidney stones cause the same thing happened to my husband and he ended up with them! Hope your all better now.
