    Hello Karen

iv have this dreaded disease for a good few years.

Been through Colonoscope where it was diagnosed.

Im having a bad flare up at the minute the worst yet.

Just been to the GP and prescribed antib. Ciprofloxacin and Metronidazole.

Im only going to take the Ciprofloxacin at the minute because after reading the leaflet that comes with Metronidazole it's frighting.

if it comes to worst il have to.

At lease having this forum to get advice from is a major help because every different Dr. you see gives different advice.

We are all suffering with DD and can give advice what works for them.

    Thanks

You made right choice to go to ER. Are you in US or UK? I'm in US and they seem to treat it differently in UK than they do here. They seem to be more aggressive in the US. I had two bouts and they wanted to take a part of my colon out.

      Hi Kieran,

Just to say the side effects of Ciprofloxacin are just as frightening as those for Metronidazole - but Cipro wins on the long-lasting after-effects or even permanence of the damage they can do.  A study revealed they can strip the good guys from your gut and keep them away for up to a year!  Not to mention the damage they can do to your joints, muscles, brain, you name it.

I know you're in a bad way but the dangers of Cipro can be a lot worse than what you are taking them for. See the discussions in the FQ thread on this site

Ty. No longer taking the cipro bc someone stole out of my car. That would explain the sudden and strong headaches though. Thank you.

My GP has seen me 3x in 2 weeks over it. He wouldnt even give me pain meds. I called him an hr b4 the pain got severe n all he did was put me on bed rest. The er is doing more for me then he is. Its 230 here. Cant sleep bc the back pain is already back and severe nausea. And if i move too suddenly or take a deep breath the stabbing pain emerges. Have urge to pooh now and cant even do that but am passing gas. They told me in er i should be fine for the night and not need a pain pill til tomm after the pharmacy opens. So was just sent home w a script n no pain meds to take. I had to bum one off hubby already. He has them for a severe concussion due to beong hit by a car on his bike. I about cried bc i had to bum one. I havent sleep good in 3 days.

I am so sorry you aren't getting anywhere with your GP but I find they don't understand DD at all I phone and they will give me antibiotics and tell me to go see them or A&E if things get worse. But I feel like they don't know what to do with me. It makes me not want to phone them I feel like I am wasting there time. Someone said to me when I told them I had DD O you've got old age IBS I said that's not the case at all. Some people don't realise how hard it can be to live with. Are you in the USA I hope you get some rest and feel better soon

Hubby wants me to try dealing w it w the pain meds they prescribed. I dont think he understands or conprehends how bad i hurt or how miserably sick i feel. But hes 21 n has asphbergers so...

He probably won't understand from what I know of people with that disorder find it hard to show emotions. You may have to fight your own corner. In the U.K. They don't take you to hospital unless you have a fever blood in stools and lots of pain. I hope you get the treatment you need x

If your white cell count is 11000 I think that means infection.  If you are on day 15 of 20 days antibiotics and are still in pain and feverish something does not seem right.  Nausea is a common side effect of the antibiotics.   I am guessing from the age of your husband you are young as well.  I am wondering if one of the known complications of Diverticular Disease is going on, like an abscess, accounting for the continuing infection and pain.  It is very uncommon in a young person though, although something like appendicitis can strike at any age.  Unfortunately because of your age you might not be taken seriously, or might be suspected of trying to get medications.  As Susan says, you might have to fight for yourself, and show just how much pain you are in.  In the UK the recommended painkiller is paracetemol for DD.  Keep fighting.
