DIVI DINERS

Posted , 82 users are following.

Returning from a hospital session of Drips and Deprevation (food) I was handed a Low Residue diet to follow. Scant in products, and information what to do with said products, I searced the web for more information,

onlt to find contradictory eat's and don't eats, so I thought that WE the

sufferers of food deprevation should start our own Divi Diners club and see if we can throw some light on the subject.

Ilove mushrooms, but cannot find any info about them.

How do we achieve our five a day if we can't eat fruit? Is it O.K. to take the

skins off?

Can we have chips or roasties,or fish with batter on?

Spices, do any of you use spices. and what do you put on spaghetti?

Can we blitz veggies, as stews and casseroles are forbidden?

Pastry is allowed, but no mentoin of which type.

So. can we help each other ,then at least when ,or if we ,dine out, we can

order something from the menu.

I cannot eat boiled potatoes ,eggs (is it O.K to have a fried one?)

jelly and rice pudding for ever. .

So please join in and share your doe's and dont's. mushrooms eaters

would be good to hear from.

    Hi Jacqui

Look what you started .. and I am delighted.

There isn't any real no-no on onions.  Onions (raw/pickled) are hard to digest.  Fried off first for stews and savoury rice etc., is fine.

Frying, generally is acceptable and don't give up your bacon butty.  However,we hae recently been told to reduce the amount of bacon we eat for general health reasons (not specifically for D sufferers).

Lets hope this bcomes the best and most informative forum.. and all thanks to you.

Curry's are OK with me - but I reduce the 'heat' with a lot of banana, desiccated coconut and mago.

Generally (and I forgot to mention) Spices, herbs are OK, bur use Cayenne sparingly.

Iv'e just discovered that Aldi sell a loaf which is called a malted bloomer.  It's the best nd most 'accommodating' bread I have ever had.  It's incredibly cheap at 95p for a full size loaf.  It mustbe good. We have no Aldi stores nearby and I travel 60 miles return journey to buy  a batch in Bournemouth (we have a bus pass!).

Do keep this running, Jacqui.  The med. profession just aren't interested. Comments like (when telling a new GP that one ins a sufferer) has  promted flippant remarks like 'yes, you and millions of others'  It's a horrible, debilitating disease always and flare-ups unbearable.  Drugs (Buscopan, Meberverine) are generally ineffective.  I don't ask for sympathy but niether do I accept dismissal.

    best wishes.  Jon

      Good morning Jon ,

what a surprise, nice one. It occurred to me as I was closing down, that you are a 12yr seasoned campaigner and I have had it for three years, during which time it has given me the occassional gentle-ish thwack. you are right on the ball with G.P's attitude, I was told I had "divi", and that everyne had it, end of conversation, and sent home

You mentioned coconut which is a no-no on the DIET sheet. It also states ,No herbs with stalks and leaves. This one is a rel tease, as I used to grow over 60 varieties of them. Anyone know of a bald, legless herb.Seemingly food is of paramount importance to keeping this yard of inner tube happy, have to say that I have just discovered Warburtons thins, which have not caused any eruptions. Let's hope this is great help to evryone ,so be prepared to air your "cook book"

      wow factor in order

I know, I'm back again, but were you ever given reasons for omitting certain foods? What a lovely way to spend the day  Heaven forbid that they have not sold out of product whe yoe get there.

I would love slice of toast, but the crunchy of it is hoding me back, plus marmalade with bits in it is de-listed.It's REALLY good news about the bacon butty.

      Hiya Jacqui

Me again!   I telephone beforehand and ask them to keep some aside for me - thus saving a wasted journey.  The only things that I have evr been told is (a) surgery is not performed anymore because the Sigmoid simply stretches a regrows pockets (b) you must learn to live with it - we won't be recalling you (c) the dietician was really quite reassuring. She said that my diet was good (eat a digestive or oatcake mid-morning) but do avoid acidy fruit/foods.

I had a very bad 'turn' last week.  I'd just come back from Antigua and, of course, my GP 'blamed' foreign food which, of course, it wasn't.  In the past when the diverticuli have been infected, I have had anti-biotics (not intraveniously). Not this time though.  You will know from the news that the use of antibiotics are the biggest medical threat to our future. Chief Medical Officer today.

Hasn't the response been good?  You must be very pleased. Jon

Hello Jon, did you find my stray mail? Your bad "do"  I find scary, there are obviously other trigger points, that sets it off Stress is something that keeps being blamed  I certainly get a shed load of that., pity there isn't a stress alarm bell. that gives a warning I was told to eat Rich tea, or shortbread, but not Digestives.I avoid anti-biotics like the plague as my doc knows, but when they are being pumped in for days on end ,the options are zero. Good job you didn't start you bad do in Antigua, once got as far as customs when a flight to Barbados landed to pick up,and passengers were allowed off the plane. .Iam going to "divert"now pardon the pun, but i would like to move from the entrance to the exit I have been invited to have a colonoscopy,  I should have it tomorrow, but the doctor thought It would be too sore ,so it has been postponed for a month which has moved my wuss  status up BIG time. I have been told that sedation is on offer, or gas and air, or nothing at all., AS if !!!!! I really need a lot of guidance on which avenue to take Hope you have been there, , and tellme ,worst option first, and if indeed it is hardly noticable until the camera gets to the corners.  Hand holding necessary .but I will settle for truth.Had a Warburtons thin with a slice if Italian ham, and a very tasteless Greek yoghurt Hope you are feeling no pain.

John, I am glad you pointed out the attitude of the medical profession. I was offered antidepressants and when I refused my doc's attitude change completely towards me.Thanks for the info about the bread I will definitely look this up.

It really works for me.. and so cheap.  Warburtons (now £1.45) eat your heart out!  Hope you manage to get some and that it good for you also.

I will not be dismissed by a GP.  I was a professional career civil servant in the Diplomatic Service.  I have eaten people like that for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

It's a horrible, debilitating, limiting, inhibiting disease and they mut be made aware of our problems. How easy to suggest anti depressants. The very work suggests dismissal.  Good luck. Jon

Hi DG, just scrolling through the Diners, and found yours about being

offered  antidepressants by your doc One of my consultants told me to see my doc, because he thought I was a bit run down, and needed a "pick me up" My doc suggested antid's took them home and binned them

There is so much info on this Diners forum I'm glad it's going again

      Are you well'?

I have found that if I have a current flare, my diet changes considerably.  Rice puffs for breakfast, plain chicken, etc.  However, there are ways to cook some of the items mentioned which I have found suitable. I bake mushrooms in the oven. Peeled or not is up to you. Tomatoes the same when they are on the menu (avoid like the plague when suffering).  Have you tried turkey bacon?  I microwave that and normal bacon too, but make sure you lay a piece of kitchen towel over it as it will spit.  Only needs a minute or two depending on the thickness of the slices.  I like peaches/nectarines which are easy to eat and to peel.  I gave up on the idea of grapes though!  Don't be too quick to dismiss the Diverticular Disease site; there's lots of info there for you.  Good health to you all.

Hello Juliet, glad you have joined  It shows how many contradictory  can and can't have  items are treated The" menu " says no tomatoes at all, skins and seeds, but it says nothing about puree It says yes to rice, but a curry with rice pudding consistency  rice sounds un appealing. Do you know the items that causes a flare,or are you unaware of what starts each one ? I have to say that I do NOT want that intense pain ever again, that is Why I am digesting all the info about food. I feel as though I am developing a obsessive

      compulsive food disorder GOOD

      Any ideas on herbs yet???

having just re read your notice ,it looks as though you know what sets your flares off,but you still eat tomatoes, and nectarines I am going on the hunt for turkey bacon today, and rushing past the fruit dept Have eaten avocados? I'm not too sure under which umbrella they sit, no

      guidance on the diet sheet

      Jacqueline.

Not had avocado for some time as they are too expensive!  I don't remember them causing problems though.  They wouldn't be called acidic.  If you enjoy apples, go for a variety that is not "sharp."  A lot of what I eat would be bad when it's only just ripe, but leave it for another day or so until just before it's too late and most of the acid will have gone.  I enjoy yoghurt but also put other things into the plain ones.  So if you find you can eat a ripe peach, chop it into the yoghurt.  I don't know for sure, but perhaps cooking the tomatoes (in the oven, not fried) may make a difference?  Put them on a piece of foil and sprinkle lightly with a little sugar.  Bake until soft.  Lovely!

Incidentally, going out for a meal is possible with forward planning.  I called the restaurant in the morning of the day we were going out and spoke to him about DD.  He was really nice and knew straight away what I needed.  We had a lovely meal out and no repercussions.  "If you don't ask, you'll never know" and the worst they can say is no; that's the way to lose customers.

      Good health to you all.
