Dizziness caused by acid reflux

Posted , 122 users are following.

I was pleased to find this site as 4 months ago I was gong to the gym most days of the week. I am 61 years old but consider myself to be relatively fit. In may of this year I developed a spit and continually wanted to clear my throat .

I have had an MRI scan, Cat scan andchest/lung Xrays, all of which were clear. I have experienced lots of the symtoms contributore to the site talk about. Back pain, shoulder pain, breathlessness, hoarsness ,buzzing in my head tiredness and most scary of all lightheadedness which makes me feel as if I'm going to faint. I have seen two ENT consultants the latter of whom said that a virus was causing too much acid being produced in my stomach and has prescribed two 20mg doses of Opemrazole daily. I have taken great comfort form the discussions on this site but I am particularly interested if anyone has experienced the lightheadedness/ dizziness and ringing in the head.

I experience extreme dizziness daily caused by acid reflux, to the point I find it hard to balance, sometimes things also spin, nothing works to relieve it, meclizine failed, ephedra cold medicine failed, the proton pumps don't work for me anymore so they fail, baking soda used to help with acid reflux but it no longer works either, my head is stopped up and stuffy from acid reflux which makes me dizzy and nothing works for it. That is the thing about the pronton pumps they will work until you run out and then skip a few days then they will no longer work, at least that is what happened to me.

Hi, my name is melissa, I started getting acid reflux about 2 years ago when I was pregnant with my third child all through 2015. Well I had her on 9-11-15 and had my 3rd c-section also. Well about 2 weeks after I had her the 2nd symptom other than the chest burning feeling of heartburn that I got was a closing tight feeling in my throat. Well I actually didn't think much of it till I noticed my glands in my neck were swollen too about two weeks after I was getting that feeling. Also didn't think much of it, but when that feeling or the swollen glands didn't go down after about a month I decided to make a Dr appt. They sent me for blood work and came back with a positive mono test. Then my life turned to hell and still is. I had the mono all the way up until June of 2016, I felt like I was dying everyday for 6 months, and when my grandmother passed in February of 2016 it made all my symptoms much worse cuz it added anxiety and stress from her passing on top of it. Anyway, ever since I got diagnosed with mono all my symptoms started and have gotten worse since then. I had gotten two endoscopy's done, one down the throat and one through my nose. Also has a colonoscopy done. They said that my esophagus was red and inflamed and that I had GERD so prescribed me 20 milligrams of Omeprazole twice daily. Well it worked for the heartburn, but nothing else. As of today my symptoms are daily regurgitation in my throat, gerd, sharp chest pains, shortness of breath, peripheral neuropathy symptoms like Burning Sensations in my skin numbness and tingling in my hands feet and face, a constant sore throat everyday all day, sinuses burn every now and then and have constant post nasal drip, I feel very out of it and hazy like a high feeling when I'm on nothing but omeprazole, muscle tiredness feelings, joint pain, muscle spasms and vibration feelings in my body, I get flashes of light in my eyes daily and blurred vision, headaches daily, itchy spots on my skin, chronic constipation and stomach aches daily, and I'm sure I'm forgetting a few because there's so many I can't even keep track of them anymore. But I've been feeling all the symptoms ever since I got diagnosed with mono and the only thing the doctor has been able to find is that my red blood cells are smaller than what they're supposed to be but cannot find a cause for it because they ruled out any form of anemia. And diagnosed me with GERD and said that I have anxiety and that can cause a lot of the symptoms that I'm getting but I do not get anxiety very often so I highly doubt that all of these symptoms are being caused by anxiety. I just talked an allergist and to taking blood test for food allergies and celiac disease and I will be hearing back in about 4 days the results of that because I know that food allergies or food and tolerance can do a number on your body as well so I wanted to see if that may be the cause of all of this and if it's not I have no clue where to begin on what could be causing all of this because I don't think that it could all be from GERD either some yes but not all the symptoms I get. But my gerd and regurgitation the past month or two has been worse than it has ever been and I'm pretty fed up with all these symptoms daily especially having to take care of 3 kids every day one of them being a baby. And was just wondering if anybody else with stomach and gerd issues experiences this many symptoms like I do or have any advice on what it could be or what I could do to make all this stuff go away or help it get better at least I would greatly appreciate any information you can give me at this point. Oh also I forgot another symptom that I get is heart palpitations which after wearing a heart monitor for a month was officially diagnosed as PVCs and tachycardia which I've heard isn't very uncommon with stomach issues and indigestion and GERD because it irritates the vagus nerve which is also connected to the heart. Anyway sorry I wrote so much and if you read it all thank you for taking your time to read my story I tried to make it as short as possible because there is actually much more detail within the 8 months or so ago all this suffering started for me but I just wanted to get the most important things in. I really hope that they find something that's more effective for people like us other than acid reducers because they really don't do much for GERD symptoms so in closing I hope that we all start feeling much better sooner rather than later. Thanks

Hi there! I have all of your symptoms and have been trying to figure out what's going for almost a year. It appears more and more to me as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome - not sure if you are familiar with it. This would make sense, particularly since you had Mono (EBV).

    • Posted

Hello there  - how do you get diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue ? I am a new reflux "patient" - had all the heartpalpitations, sweats etc etc and thought it was my heart ! I have inherited my digestion problems from  my mum's side of the family and have had indigestion for years - but never more than burping. This level is something new. Had a heart monitor for 24 hrs but of course nothing showed up. I suspect my nerves/stress are not helping at all and will be discussing with my GP very soon about going on to antidepressants to get it under control. What scares me is the lightheadedness/breathlessness that happens now when I do a bit too much - like light housework. I am in a mess for hours afterwards. Is this normal ? Have made some big changes to my diet - will be seeing a GP who also specialises in alternative medicine in a weeks time. By the way, I was diagnosed with viral pneumonia the week before Xmas - knocked me off my feet for 6 weeks - then this whole reflux thing just exploded - connection ??  Someone did mention Chronic Fatigue....

Hi michelle, I can relate to all of your symptoms. I had pneumonia over christmas 2013. Up until then I was in perfect health but after I have been suffering with acid reflux. I have had an endoscopy and they said I have gastritis and a hiatus hernia. I have tried all sorts to sort my stomach problems out but nothing seems to work. I wonder if it was to do with the antibiotics I had to take to treat the pneumonia as I was in perfect health up until then. It's been 3 years now and my GP can't seem to find the cause.

Hi, I have had all of these symptoms starting suddenly in November. I had blood work done testing positive for H pylori & completed the recommended 2 weeks triple therapy. I started feeling better. It is a brutal treatment, so I also started seeing a Naturopathic for a more holistic approach to get my GI system back on track. EGD for me showed acid reflux. I have an upcoming appt w/ Naturopathic to see how I can help this without acid reducers. I take a beta blocker for the tachycardia. Try looking up Manuka honey for GI healing. Naturopathic gave me a great probiotic, GI revive powder to mix & drink, & did micronutrient panel of blood work (waiting on that result). This has been life changing, sorry you are going through this.

Hi Melissa I had to respond As you are describing my life! It's got to the point where I worry about brinkging up yet another symptom with my dr as even to me it sound so hard to believe one person can suffer all this!

I also have 3 children (youngest is 2) it's so hard to look after them feeling so bad all the time. Did you get your celiac results? My blood was negative for it but I've read the best way is to diagnose it by biopsy during endoscopy. I'm trying to ge my dr to send me for one. I've been referred for colonoscopy but I think an endoscopy will reveal more.

I've been put in 20mg omeprazole once a day and 150mg ranitidine twice a day. The omeprazole make me have stomach cramps and loose stool and feel dizzy and eyes are sensitive to light.

I also have shoulder pain for the past 3 months I don't know if that's related to reflux.

Hi! You get tested by eliminating any other illnesses/causes of your symptoms. I would research and see a neurologist/rheumatologist that had some experience with these types of illnesses.

Hello Melissab1985 I'm glad and comforted I found someone who has the same symptoms as me. I am 27 years old but do not have kids but have been suffering with these GERD symptoms for 4 months now and have greatly reduced my quality of life. I work full time and have found it hard to perform my job having all of these symptoms. Along with the acid reflux I've had bloating, palpitations, weakness in legs, fatigue, sinus pressure, headaches in front and back of head, neck pains, thrpat feeling closed, feeling heartbeat in my chest and back, upper and lower back pains, burping, hiccups, blurred vision, and sometimes hot ears and nose and facial areas. I've been going to emergency rooms and doctors have just given me pills for headaches and sinus infections and gerd but nothing seems to work. I have became very depressed and get the worst thoughts in my head like thinking it might be cancer. I'm overweight and been on a strict diet this past week and thought maybe if I eliminate greasy fatty food I will be okay but hasn't made too much of a difference. If you have heard anything new about your condition please let me know. Thank you and I hope you feel better.

Hi dan, sorry it took me so long to respond, yea I actually thought I may have that, or fibromyalgia or something, it most people with cfs complain that they are extremely tired all the time no matter what they do, and although I am much more tired these days then I used to be, I'm not as bad as what cfs sufferers say. I can wake up and last the whole day most of the time just fine, so I don't know. Maybe gerd really messes this bad with you. I know it can make your life miserable. It has for me anyway. A week ago I have started a very strict diet, all meat, vedgies fruit aND nuts, nothing else AT ALL and I only drink water, coconut milk or water, and almond milk, also certain teas that are supposed to be good for digestion amd calming, with honey. I am trying to wean myself off of Omeprazole too cuz I heard this can make you have these kinds of side effects. Amd I've been on omeprazole for a year and a half now. I'm on my third day of taking 10 mgs a day. I'll let you know if any of this helps smile

Hi michelle, I'm orry it took so long to respond, I haven't had much time to get on any social media lately with, as you know having 3 kids, aND my new job. But yes my allergies test came back saying I was allergic to absolutely nothing.. and my celiac blood test came back negative as well. So I was stumped on what could be causing all of this too. And yes I agree with you, that a colonoscopy is a much better way of testing for celiac

Oops I accidentally hit send when I wasn't finished yet. Sorry... anyway about a month after I posted this I noticed that my symptoms were getting a bit better but still were there. And the past 3 or 4 months I have been monitoring when my symptoms act up at their worst and when they subside a bit and noticed that when I'm about to start my period and during my period my symptoms are at their worst so I'm starting to think that this may have something to do with it. Also I get anxiety sometimes at the same exact time which if you get anxiety bad enough it will make your symptoms much much worse. Actually two weeks ago I had a bad panic attack because my gerd symptoms were acting up so badly that it felt like I was literally having a heart attack and felt like my blood supply was being cut off to my brain and I was getting very faint amd light headed, felt like I had a vise around my head and chest sometimes too. My muscles are spasming everywhere in my whole body especially in my chest and my neck and every time that happened I would get very short of breath and have to deep breathe and still felt like I wasn't getting enough air. But yeah I get all sorts of symptoms with this stuff and I'm beginning to think that being on your period and anxiety makes the symptoms much worse if you get anxiety? I don't know if you do or not. But as I said to Dan a week ago I started and extremely strict diet with nothing but meat, mostly lean meat, vegetables fruit and nuts and the only thing that I drink is water almond milk coconut water or coconut milk and certainties that are supposed to be good for your stomach and helps calm you and put a little bit of honey in it. Anyway I'm sorry I'm making this so long so I'll cut to the chase I'm going to try this diet for a while and throwing some exercising and lose some weight cuz I'm about 40 pounds overweight and see if this helps and if it does I will definitely let you know so you can try it too. Oh and also I was taking 20 milligrams of Omeprazole daily but I'm trying to wean myself off of it and today is my third day of being down to 10 milligrams a day because I heard that Omeprazole can cause these sorts of symptoms to. Thanks for your reply and again sorry for taking so long to respond hope I hear back from you soon smile

Hi Christine I'm sorry it took so long for me to respond. I have been working lately too a lot and taking care of three kids so I haven't had much time for social media. But yes everything that you just named I also get to literally everything the only thing I don't get is the weAK legs, but I do get weakness in my arms and hands. And I have taken many many blood tests x-rays CT scans you name it I've done it. Had a stomach CT scan a chest CT scan a brain MRI more blood work than you can think of a neck ultrasound a colonoscopy and endoscopy I've literally had all the above and they have found nothing other than a few minor things I already knew I had like an irregular heartbeat and leaking heart valves I also have a nerve disorder. Amd of coarse I have gerd, amd chronic constipation. so I don't know where to begin on what could be causing all these symptoms either. And I still to this day get all of those symptoms my worst ones I would have to say that scare me the most is the constant muscle twitching in my chest and stomach I also get everywhere else too but those two places are the ones that worry me the most I get twitching everywhere from my head to my toes constantly and I noticed when I get the twitching in my chest I get a really bad pressure feeling in my chest that makes it hard to breathe and it spreads all the way up to my neck to my head and makes my head feel very pressure eyes like it's in a vice and I feel very dizzy and faint for a few moments after. I constantly have a feeling of being on drugs or detached from reality and a foggy hazy feeling. but there are times when it's not so bad and times when it's really bad but as I was saying before I did notice that all my gerd symptoms and every other weird symptoms that we are getting is always worse around the time I get my period I've been keeping track for the past four or five months to make sure I was right and I was every time I get my period all my symptoms are at their worst for about a week or two and then they subside a little bit they don't go completely away but they are tolerable. I also noticed that my anxiety acts up at the same time my gerd symptoms start up really bad and I'm on my period and we all know that that anxiety makes you physical symptoms 10 times worse than they already are so since I'm making this long once again I will wrap it up and say that you should keep doing exactly what you said go on a very strict diet no sugar no fat no carbonated drinks no caffeine all of that triggers GERD and maybe do a little exercising also because if you said you were overweight like I am. exercising and losing weight I have heard always helps a little with GERD if not a lot. But yeah I just started my strict diet a week ago and cut back a little on the Omeprazole dosage and I'm going to keep this up and do a little exercising each week to lose weight also and see how I feel then and I will get back to you and a little bit to let you know if it has made a difference so if it does you can do it too or if you already are to keep it up and I would love to hear how you're doing also since it's been a couple months smile

I will contact the GI doctor for a sooner than June 2nd appointment. I am so exhausted dealing daily with all these agitating symptoms. Thanks, hope you'll get an effective renedies. I'll post when I'll get an effective treatment.

I constantly have a feeling of being on drugs or detached from reality and a foggy hazy feeling. That's exactly what I have.  Plus ringing in the ears.  Going to try to combat this through diet, too.  Nothing else works.

Hi Melissa. I can relate to so much of what your saying. I suggest getting your ferritin levels and thyroid checked. If your ferritin is not 70-90 the. You are low. Do a full iron work up. The last thing is look up hyperparathyroid symptoms. Has your calcium levels been high at all? The Norman parathyroid center in Tampa FL has a great website. I've been dealing with this for 9 months and finally getting some answers. Wish you the best of luck.

It was so good to read this. Sorry to hear about all the awful symptoms but I suffer with many of the things you listed. Sounds ridiculous but sometimes I feel so awful I wonder if that's it. I get chest pains, dizziness, numbness and pins and needles, the lights in the eyes, breathlessness and well many more. I take omeprazole the strongest apparently twice a day. Does not seem to be working anymore. Have also taken lansoperazole but that stopped working too. I also drink acidex like it's going out of fashion but at the moment it is terrible. I can't lead a normal life because I'm either losing my balance or simply out of breath. I also have been fobbed off with anxiety and I said if I am having anxiety it's only because of the awful symptoms causing it and not the other way round! I also sometimes get the palpitations. Horrible stuff. sad

I have been taking lanzaprol for years now due to acid reflux and hiatus hernia, I was diagnosed just over a week ago with very low iron and put on iron tablets, the thing is since i started taking iron tablets my indigestion ie acid and chest pain have become a lot worse, and the dizziness and lightheaded are really bad. I don't know if the iron tablet is causing this but I can't function as soon as i stand up I feel soooo dizzy. should I stop iron tablets or persevere, I just know this dizziness is driving me crazy

Hi Melissa and hopefully everyone who finds this site... about a year and a half ago I was dealing with the majority of the symptoms you've listed and was equally scared and cautious. Saw plenty of doctors and had many tests done. I thought I had every auto immune disease there was. But after coming to no solid conclusions for months the symptoms finally just stopped and I truly believe that the main cause for this was my diligent use of Apple Cider Vinegar. I definitely believe now after reading everyone's posts here that GERD is the cause for these pains and complications i was and am now again dealing with. But I haven't taken ACV in far too long and have also been eating "gerd triggering" meals as of late. I hope you all can start taking Apple cider vinegar daily and report back with your prolonged use of it/how you are feeling. For those who can't stand the taste of it, there are capsules you can buy online or possibly your local natural grocery store. I take 2 1500mg to start my day with a lot of water. I hope this is the cure we are searching for. I will be documenting my progress as well being that today is the first day I'm feeling all of the prior symptoms again....after 1 and a half years.....sad.

      Good luck to you all

there are better ways to find out how Apple cider vinegar indeed helps manage GERD if you do your research but basically it is going to keep your stomach acid at the proper levels to where your body doesn't feel the need to produce excess. no doctor here but it is confusing being that it is acidic. ACV is truly a wonder of the world.
