Excessive Yawning and Constant Need to Breathe Deep

Posted , 480 users are following.

For the past few days, I've been yawning a lot, much more than average (once every few minutes I feel the need). If I'm not yawning I'm breathing in as deep as I can to get similar "satisfaction". Often I cannot get the "satisfaction" from these and so the urge grows and grows, meaning it can get quite uncomfortable. When I do manage it, the urge is back a few seconds later. This is whether I'm tired or not, almost all day.

I'm not particularly anxious about anything in particular, and get the same amount of sleep as before this started.

This also happened at some point within the past year which continued for a month or two if I remember correctly.

Does anyone have any idea what it is or how to make it a bit better?

Thanks.

Hi all, I know this thread was actually started quite a while ago but due to it obviously being a big question I thought I would add an idea of my own.

First off I have come to the conclusion that more than anything it's a habit something similar to biting your nails, playing with your hair and even something as unrelated as door checking, so if I'm right and this is more a part of OCD then here goes with my solution.

Firstly you need to replace the yawning/overbreathing with something else.

The other day I met my friend for coffee, all the while we where together she kept making a very slight noise in the back of her throat, not a cough but more like a soft grunt, I finally asked her was she ok and she went on to explain that about three years ago she had become poorly with her nerves and as a consequence she started overbreathing with then escalated to constant yawning, she read what could be the cause online and scared herself silly, she made an appointment to see the doctor and he checked her over, she was fine but couldn't stop, so she then realized she could sleep with it and eat without a problem so it wasn't Physical, she could excercise no problem, she just couldn't stop yawning.

Hence a habit, so because it was a really bad habit that was driving her crazy she swapped it for another, the low growl, I remembered this so when I started again I decided to concentrate on other things, singing, growling, eating a boiled sweet, sipping water etc

Once I had persuaded my body/mind it didn't need it I eventually stopped doing it.

Even forcing yourself to keep your mouth shut helps

Sorry but it's not a habit nor it's in our heads ! It's a real illness and should be treated by professional doctors. In my case benzos helps but didn't cure it, Incruse ellipta inhaler helped me tremendously but I run out because it was just a sample from my primary doctor. I have a second pulmonologist appointment this coming Friday, I might have bronchospasm caused by COPD or anxiety and stress.

So what you are saying Nate is that yours is constant and that no matter what you do it's their all the time even when your distracted.

So has your Dr or consultant told you

that it's part of your diagnosis anf that it's not anything to do with the mind but definitely a physical symptom of either COPD or to do with bronchial illness

I suffer from this 24/7 it never leaves I'm convinced I'm dying and I'm very afraid I can't exercise or anything and the doctors cant find the problem I've been to pulmonologist and had all kinda test I have to gasp for air all day long it's horrifying I am literally dying

I have posted this before and I'll post it again for people or just arriving and haven't read all the threads. I suffered from not being able to get a full breath of air as well as gasping and the need to yawn constantly. After nearly a year of suffering I was finally diagnosed with vocal cord dysfunction. I also have a problem with my shoulder and the muscles from my shoulder wreaking havoc on the muscles in my neck also causing a problem with my breathing. Please see someone about vocal cord dysfunction, and then see a massage therapist if you have any muscular issues. I've seen physical therapists, chiropractors and massage therapists and the massage therapist is the most painful however the most effective. I am not a doctor and cannot answer many more questions I just know how horrible this was for me for such a very long time.

Yes it's constant 24/7. I can't take deep breath, it's like 50% of my lungs are closed. I can breathe better when I get distracted or when I'm relaxed but it's still there. And the initial thought of the doctor was Copd but he didn't know for sure what it is ,I saw him only once and I'm going to his office next Friday for walking test and some other tests and maybe later a ct scan. But after I used the incruse ellipta inhaler and had huge relief from it I now believe it's something has to do with the muscles around the lungs.

You're not dying. Please ask your doctor about Anticholinergic inhalers to see if it's going to help you and I'm sure it will. like Spiriva, Tudorza, Incruse ellipta, etc, these inhalers works by relaxing the muscles in the airways.

I was referred to a ent and it's not vocal cord dsyfunction nor is it copd

I went to two different ENTs and they didn't find it either. An allergist is the one who found it and then a separate third ENT verified it. It could also be muscular. Like I said I'm not a doctor I just know what works for me. I hope that my results will help other people find their results.

I really truthfully believe 100% I've got a life threatening illness which is effecting my breathing that doctors cannot discover wether it be cancer or whatever and I am going to die any day from this I liken it to suffocation it feels like I've been under water and I surface to catch my breath it is absolutely horrifying and I am either ready to die from it or it to go away I do not want to suffer from this another day I feel like I am trapped in a body that does not work

I know exactly what you're saying. I felt the same way for a lot of months and eventually somebody found the problem. Please hang in there. Demand doctor's attention. I thought it was going to kill me. Or I was going to put my own lights out. I kept saying hold on one more day. I'm glad I did!

Please just give those inhalers I mentioned a shot, especially incruse ellipta, it made me breath normally I couldn't believe it and I only used it for 14 days because it was a sample from my primary doctor. I also had ct scan and chest x-ray last year and they didn't find anything. I'm gonna ask my pulmonolgist to put me on this inhaler when I go to do some breathing tests next Friday. And remember this, we stil have illness and diseases that are not detectable with all the modern medical technologies we have right now.

I have the same thing x 15 years. They believe it’s anxiety and I’m on Benzos but it’s just a bandaid on a undiagnosed problem.  I believe it’s anxiety caused by shortness of breath! Who wouldn’t be anxious?  We need doctors to give us some solutions to why or what to try? I was cleared by pulmonary and cardiology. I even got cathed when it wasn’t suggested. I just wish it would leave as fast as it showed up!

I tried xanax and Klonopin, they did help a little but it wasn't a cure for me too. The only thing that helped me and made me breath Normally was Incruse ellipta inhaler.
