Feel like something stuck in my throat

Hi. I'm really hoping somebody can help me, can't find any discussions on here!  For the last few months I've had a feeling of having something stuck at the base of my throat or like a lump. It's not there all the time and comes and goes. I went to visit the doc and she had a look but said couldn't see anything and all looked and felt good, but to be in the safe side would refer me to ent to have a look.   So today, a month after seeing doc, I had a letter from hosp.  I have an urgent appt in 5 days to be seen so that they can rule out more serious conditions such as cancer.  This letter has completely freaked me out and I have been in tears all day and am now thinking I have some form of cancer!   I'm a 41 yr old lady and a complete mess today as I can't phone or speak to anybody for assurance or advice!

Could my go have seen something and not told me??? Thankyou x

      Hi,

I have had this issue since 2 years now and it only got worse with time. What I know after tests n checkups is that the feeling of something stuck in my throat is caused by Gerd n Ibs. So acid reflux is the main culprit. If ur symptoms are stil not so horrible get it checked asap its possible you have acidity issue as well. Im not taking meds for now since ive taken so many in past 2 year still im hopeful. I am trying lifestyle changes and some food changes lets see if that helps. il update here. Goodluck to you, Keep me updated on your condition.

Hi Samantha! I see that it has been over a year since you posted this however my hope is that people like me who came on here looking for answers sees this.

My husband has been suffering from much the same thing as everyone here is describing which is why I ended up here. He has been going through it since May and it is currently the end of July.

The doctors thought that it was acid reflex however he took the medicines and changed his diet like the doctors asked and still the same..

He went to what ended up being his 4th doctor and they hit the nail on the head. He had muscle tightness... Before you think there is no way this is what you have (like I did, I thought the dr was crazy) we went to a physical therapist and he explained it and it all made sense. there is a muscle that goes on both sides of his neck and connects down at the base of his throat.. which makes sense as to why he was feeling like something was stuck in his throat. If you haven't already you may want to ask your dr if they think this is the problem. He is currently getting electro therapy and doing stretches and is feeling better each day. Hope this helps someone! -Katie

Hi, I'm so glad I came across this site. I have had this feeling of something stuck in my throat I went to my doctor twice and he said its nothing serious it most likely allergies so he prescribed loratadine 10mg twice and it doesn't seem to work. I have this feeling most of the time it's if it goes and comes idk. When I lift my head up like if I'm looking at the sky I swallow and don't feel it but right when I have my head down or looking straight that's when I feel the sensation 😩 I'm so fustrated. I'm glad your husband is getting over the feeling I want to feel that way too!

      Hi Livi08!

My husband went to see an allergist afterwards as well because the physical therapy helped but didn't ever make it go away completely. We found that with him it seems to be both the muscle problem and his allergies. He had a history of really bad allergies and he used to be on allergy shots as a child. Well now he is back on them and he is feeling nearly 100%. Comes in time I guess... & he hasn't been on the shots very long, only one week.

Maybe doing an allergy test will help? My husband's allergies were way worse than we thought. Prior to him getting the shots he was prescribed medicine as well and it didn't help him either.

      Hope you feel better soon!

Ha same thing with me. When I was a kid it affected my skin to where would flake and peel off including my eyelids and so much so that I had to go see a dermatologist. Allergy test confirmed I had severe seasonal allergies. Started and Allergy regimen with Zyrtec and some nasal spray along with some skin conditioner (it was in a white bottle) to wash with. After I had my daughter not much major allergy problems other than taking an over the counter pill a day. Three years later her and I allergies start acting up really bad. She goes to see an ENT who wants to remove her tonsils and adenoids I was scared and asked if there was something else. She too is on an allergy regimen Nasonex once a day and Claritin 10 milligrams twice a day. I didn't have insurance at the time so I just dealt with it taking over the counter medicine. Just recently went to go see an ENT myself and found out it was my allergies back. Put me on hydroxyzine 25 milligrams twice a day and Flonase twice today

Hi Amidala , I have have the same thing going on right now with my throat, been like this for about 5 months now, went to doctor yesterday , going to monitor it along with some acid reflux meds. I'm hoping it's just acid reflux and allergies. I have been going crazy over this too with anxiety and worry. Glad I found this thread, did your husband say anything about his throat feeling extremely dry? When I take pills , my throat feels very dry. Hoping that's caused by allergies.

      Hey Mel!

I'm sorry you're not feeling well.. hopefully this helps. His throat was constantly dry, scratchy and irritated. He said its improved since he's started allergy shots and 2 allergy meds per day. The doctor has him taking a Allegra and Montelukast.

      Hopefully this information helps you!

You just said something I've been thinking might be the cause with my current situation. Back in early February I started getting a left ear ache and "stiffness" on the left side of my neck. I was given anti-inflammation meds and sent to PT. Within the first few sessionsof PT, I started feeling that weird sensation in my throat. Been sent to get an MRI, CT Scan, and the ENT (who did the camera down my throat through the nose procedure). PT helped a little but I still have the neck stiffness. MRI (for neck stiffness) showed a "mild bulge". Was sent to another specialist who said it was a muscle spasm by normal wear and tear. Throat issue seems to have gotten worse, however after the CT scan (for throat issue) came back negative and the camera exam down throat was negative, I thought it might be due to the neck stiffness and/or allergies which I never really had growing up.

      Hi gabmark115,

That sounds alot like his situation. I really hope this helps you. This form was a god send for us and I hope to help others!

My husband is feeling MUCH better, his was a combination, so the appergy shots are helping him along with PT.

Hiya, I see this is a long while ago now but I'm having the same problem with my throat and also wondered if it was due to muscles as I had strained myself lifting something heavy, did your husband also have the feeling like something sharp like a bone was in his throat as well as a lump feeling?

I know it's ages ago but did you get this sorted. I've had weird neck pain since November. Been to GP 3 times. Feels like neck being pulled down or twisted (like when you had a Chinese burn when you were a kid) lol. On top of that a lump in my throat which is driving me mad.  It's making me depressed. I never have both symptoms at the same time. Doctor hadn't a clue but has referred me for an ultra sound on my neck.  I feel so unhappy because I just want to feel normal again. Some days it's gone and it's great but it comes back after 2-4 days

i got mine figured out yesterday.       I bet with you its either your thyroid  ( which mine is gone so i know it wasn't that)   OR   its what i have which is that SILENT REFLUX  thing.  The lining of my esophagus apparently is all eaten away.     They did a scope where they put this camera that looks like a piece of spaghetti with a light on it into my nose and into my neck while i was awake.  IT didn't hurt,  just a weird sensation.   When they go to the part where it was bothering me,  i about jumped off the table.   So here i am,  now i finally have a diagnoses.  They put me on some hard core acid reducers which is like taking 4 x  the amount you can buy without a prescription and told me that i cant eat a bunch of stuff i like to eat for 6 weeks until this goes away.  Google  "silent reflux"   and see if that is what you think you have.    If its thyroid,  you would have more symptoms  which is a whole other ball of wax.

Omg! I want to cry. You described what I have to the T. Ear ache, left neck stiffness. I’ve been thinking he worst and he docs are not convinced it’s anything fatal. Thank you, never considered allergies. Please give me an update.

      Hi Katie -

I know it's been a while since you posted, but wanted to see how your husband was doing with the stretches and electro therapy? I was just on this forum thinking "no one has mentioned neck stiffness/muscle tightness" and then came across your post - so thank you 😃 I have what feels like something stuck in my throat on the left side, and notice my neck is stiff, like a muscle has been pulled. If I concentrate it kinda feels like the muscle may be in a slight spasm. However, my doc didn't feel anything out of the ordinary and couldn't see anything wrong with my throat/tonsils. I go to an ENT this Thursday and am so nervous. Did your husband experience any burning sensation in his throat, or any pain besides the discomfort? I'm glad to hear the stretches and PT helped, and hopefully he's still feeling good!

      Take Care,

      Elizabeth
