Feel like something stuck in my throat

Hi. I'm really hoping somebody can help me, can't find any discussions on here!  For the last few months I've had a feeling of having something stuck at the base of my throat or like a lump. It's not there all the time and comes and goes. I went to visit the doc and she had a look but said couldn't see anything and all looked and felt good, but to be in the safe side would refer me to ent to have a look.   So today, a month after seeing doc, I had a letter from hosp.  I have an urgent appt in 5 days to be seen so that they can rule out more serious conditions such as cancer.  This letter has completely freaked me out and I have been in tears all day and am now thinking I have some form of cancer!   I'm a 41 yr old lady and a complete mess today as I can't phone or speak to anybody for assurance or advice!

Could my go have seen something and not told me??? Thankyou x

Hi Samantha I've had same experience for going on a year now and I'm terrified to get checked out. I feel for you and just wanted to talk to someone going through this. I feel so frustrated with the feeling all day every day! Have you found out anything new? I'm hoping to hear from you!

    Hi Everyone!

I started having the same "something struck in the throat" feeling about a month back. After seeing an ENT specialist, I was surprised to hear from him that there was nothing abnormal in the throat! Then, I met the orthopedic. He was able to find that it was due to muscle stiffness. I fell 8 months ago, and it resulted in subluxation of my c6-c7 spine. It was painful but the doctor said it would get back to normal since it was only a slight misalignment of my cervical spine. As he said, in 6 months, the pain did go off almost 95%. But all this time when the pain was reducing, I was cautious about moving my neck and held it stiff because I was very afraid that the subluxation might get worse if I moved my neck normally. This has caused muscle stiffness at the sides of my neck and then I have started having this sensation of something stuck in the throat. Now, I am on PT for the past three days and feeling much better. So, don't be afraid. It need not be something very serious! Do some normal neck exercises and you might feel better smile

      That's good to hear!

I do believe it is muscles in the neck, makes complete sense!

Though doesn't answer why I and others have started suffering from acid too 🤔

Hi Nichola, I’m so sorry to hear you feel like this, I think we all know on here how you feel, it’s horrid to have this day and night, like you mine doesn’t come and go it’s just always there.

I have had it for 9 months now though and I have to say it does get better, wether we just get use to it or it does improve, I like you have thought Cancer as I’ve lost weight, I’ve been seen by ENT and all was clear but I’m having an endoscopy on Thursday as I’ve been suffering from acid in recent months, also I do suffer from health anxiety so this really hasn’t helped.

I’m sure you are absolutely fine but the ENT will be able to put your mind at rest.

There seems to be a lot of us with this with no real answers, stress does seem to play a part though. I hope your appointment comes quickly 😊

Thankyou for replying,im sending myself nuts. The more i think about it the more im feeling at my glands and thinking they feel bigger. How far down your throat does the camera at ent see? This is really low and worried they'll only look as far as the voice box x

I’ve been sending myself nuts for the last 9 months!! Just back from Drs again as I can feel glands up.

That was exactly my question with ENT as they can only see so far and mine is much lower too, that’s why I’m having endoscopy now which I’m petrified of but I need to know what’s going on as the anxiety is getting worse

I had the same globus sensation, swollen glands, sore/dry throat for months...  I never had any allergies ( never have been tested) but one dose of zirtec allergy medicine ( cetrizine) cleared up the globus sensation and helped with the anxiety( which really sucks when trying to enjoy life).  Mine eventually went away after a month of zirtec.. and acid blocker ( Prilosec).  I did see an ENT who said it was very possible that it was a new allergy ( I’m 47 years old).. he also said it could be related to  GERD / acid reflux.  Try zirtec ( cetrizine) or other similar  allergy meds-  and acid blockers to start.. cheap and nothing to lose.

By the way the Zirtec (cetrizine) helped with the globus sensation within 15-20 minutes. I was amazed.   I thought for sure I had some bigger issues going on.. which seems to perpetuates this fear/stress cycle that creates more physical problems.

Thanks mike, I have cetrizine as I have hayfever, did you take one daily for a month?

I must say mine has been a lot better recently, I’m booked in for more stomach tests tomorrow to see if anything else causing the acid, if not I’ll take cetrizine for a month! Thanks for your help!

Hi Katie I had 24 hr ph test , endoscopy and manomatry also barium swallow and the ent doctor put a small camera up my nose into the back of my throat it was all inflamed from acid reflux . That is what they have said to me to my sphincter doesn’t close properly I need the Nissen fundopliction operation. Their is a group on FB where people have had this done I’ve been added to it it’s called( nissen fundopliction hope this helps have u got all the crappy symptoms of silent reflux?

angela ,     when you say you have bad acid reflux,   do you literally burp stuff up?  because i have all this stuff and i don't burp anything up.  everyone is saying acid reflux but i just eat and it stays down.

No nothing comes up when I burp even tho I burp a lot but I find the burping helps because I feel a pressure in my neck throat area and I burp and it kind of eases it . My reflux happens at night when I’m in bed as my 24 hr ph testing showed the acid come up while I’m asleep so not much I can do about that but prop myself up at night and lay on my left side it’s supposed to help so I’m told .

Hi Angela, they haven’t offered me that op, my consultant said it was only slightly loose so maybe it’s not loose enough 🤔 I had the tube up nose too and into throat, that was all fine.

I’ve had globus and can sometimes feel the acid, a real pain 😒
