Frozen shoulder 3rd time lucky

Posted , 16 users are following.

Hi, For those  of you have seen my comments on here already, thought I would ask the question, but has anyone been unlucky as me. Seen consultant Monday to be told I need third operation, arthroscopic capsular release - revision. Have lost count of the amount of steroid inj I have had. The pain is still awful and keeps me awake at night like the rest of you. Only been back to work 4 weeks on phased return and have been signed off. Tuesday 13th is operation day hope it is the end of it then. Has anyone else experienced such a tough time and finally got to the finishing post.

Jay, my pt told me that cortisone injections are not good for your joints as people are led to believe. He said it was like putting battery acid on your joint..good God. i have heard that hthey can help, but he said its never a good idea to get them after surgery...not good to put it on a healing joint or muscle

Hi, Not sure why your pt has told you this as most people on this forum have has steroid injections. Did he give a reason. The last one my consultant gave me, gave me almost instant relief for a couple of weeks, but we had already discussed the 3rd op so it reduced my pain for a few weeks until the op. I am not sure if they are good or bad but any relief from the pain is better than none. Does that mean you will not be trying them. Remeber everyone is different.

Well I am three weeks out from my surgery but I live in the States and had a combination Frozen Shoulder/Rotator Cuff Tear surgery.  In fact what the surgeon found was a bone spur that caused the rotator cuff tear which then caused the frozen shoulder. So he shaved the bone spur, repaired the small rotator cuff tear, and then released the frozen shoulder. I started with physical therapy the day after the surgery and have had therapy twice a week since.  My pain is getting less and less every week and my range of motion is excellent.  I did search to find an orthopedic surgeon who specializes in shoulders and that is all he does so I am hoping that one surgery does the trick.  Although I am being realistic as I listen to all of your stories.  His secretary did tell me though that he has only had to do second surgeries on patients in the seven years she has been working with him only 4 times so I am hoping I am not number 5!!!  I wish all of you good luck especially you Jay who are having surgery for the third time!!

Thanks Lambchop.............3rd op and things are looking good right now. My consultant did say if this does not work then there is not much more he can do.... he specialises in shoulder surgery. He did think I may be in the minority where it will not get better and then have to learn to live with it. Living with that pain i thought he was joking but he wasn't. Everyone is different and may be one op is enough but have never heard of anyone having so much done in one go. I had bone spur removed too. I have also been told the other shoulder generally goes the same way within two years. The thought leaves me with fear. Good Luck with your recovery. smile

Hi Jay, I hope you do get better and do not have to learn to live with it. That would be a shame.  I am 4 weeks post op and feeling better every day. Sleeping is getting easier too. Still in PT and will be for two more months. 3 months altogether my doctor says. I still have a way to go.   I read that the key to all of this is 20% surgery and 80% PT so I keep doing my exercises,  How are you doing?

Hi Lambchop,  You are doing amazingly well. It is good to hear when people are experiencing good results post surgery. Pt does help but it is getting the balance right and not pushing too hard that causes things to flare up. I am doing fine thank you. When I have overdone it the  shoulder feels very heavy and I know to ease off the next day. Most exercises are comfortable now except arm behind back is stil a killer and only just above waist height again as at first I was up near the bra strap. I am exercising every day and have managed to sleep on the  shoudler but it does give me pain but not as much as before. Feeling confident still. Hope you continue to improve. Best Wishes smile

Well it sounds like you are improving and I hope you continue to do so. I am not able to sleep on my shoulder yet but it has only been 4 weeks. I see my surgeon on December 9 and have now started to increase weight bearing exercises at PT and at home.  I certainly hope that your third time surgery was the charm and that your ROM continues to improve and pain lessens.

Jay how are you feeling I'm having my revision capsular release this month. Was wondering how your recovery is going. Hopefully your still on the right track.

HI, Hod did your op go on the 7th? Hope you are feeling better and noticing a positive difference. Best Wishes

HI, Yes still on the right track. smile Have little pain, but I have noticed that if I use the shoulder to lift slightly heavier things then the shoulder feels slightly stiff. Still having light physio exercises to do. I can raise the arm up straight and do most exercises. The one behind the back is still tricky but the consultant told me it is the last to get to where it is normal for each individual. Can sleep on it for a while and then starts to feel sore. See the consultant Monday 21st so will update further. Been thinking of you and hope you feel your op was worth it. Early days for you.

Hi Jay, I am glad to see that you are still improving. I am also.  I can also life my arm straight up and can finally go without my sling.  I saw the surgeon last week and he is pleased with my progress. I will still be in physical therapy for the next month and am exactly where you are as far as putting my arm aroud my back. I am pretty amazed considering my surgeon did three procedures in one surgery -- rotator cuff tear repair, bone spur, and frozen shoulder repair.  But he is supposed to be the top shoulder surgeon in my area so fingers crossed this will be it!!  Good luck to you and your continued recoverty!!  Leslie

Hi Leslie, So pleased to hear you are improving. I had bone spur done in first op with capsular release. I know from a friend the rotator cuff is not a pleasant recovery at the start. So pleased to hear you are in a good place. Lets hope this is the light at the end of your tunnel and the New Year we can start to leave it all behind us. I find this site invaluable as the people on it experienced it first hand........well most of them. No one can imagine what FS is like unless you have been through it for sure.  I am in Bucks, what area are you in?   Best Wishes

I am in the States - Long Island NY to be exact.  You are so right that this site has been and continues to be invaluable as no one can relate to the pain of Frozen Shoulder unless they have experienced it. It is unique!!  I have heard it described here as a toothache sometimes and I can related to that as well.  But hopefully you and I will continue to improve and put this behind us. It is too bad you needed three operations to get to this point!! But let's move forward and hope that we never return to  the pain of frozen shoulder!!! Take care!!

Happy holidays just checking to see how you're doing and how your appt on the 21st went.

Happy Holidys to you too. My appt on 21st was good thank you. The consultant got me doing the normal movements that we are all use to and was pleased with the amount of movement and range. He told me there are a few movements that will come in time but in general we are definitely on the right track. I do not have as much strength in the right arm as I do the left so now how to work on that. I have almost no pain now, just when I have really over used the arm and I mean like carrying too heavy stuff etc. A little sore sometimes if I have slept on it which as you know that is something a FS does not allow you to do. So How are you doing? Do you think you have made the right decision on your op? Do you feel it is working for the better? I hope your pain has improved greatly and best wishes for 2016, health and happiness.

My surgery was postponed until Feb 1st. I'm so happy that your pain is gone that is amazing. I hope I get similar results. Did u get frozen shoulder after a surgery? My pain is pinpoint in the front of my shoulder and radiates down my bicep. Did any doctors suggest a pain syndrome to you. One dr thought I shouldnt be in this much pain for so long. Seems like you were in a ton of pain as well. I'm so scared because the first release didn't change the pain and I froze up so quick.

sorry to hear you surgery was cancelled. Feb seems ages away when you are in pain. After my 1st Capsula release I got frozen shoulder. Had steroid inj as you know. The pain was so bad went for the MUA and got frozn shoulder again, more steroid inj. The pain like yours was so bad that I could not hold down my job and finally I got the surgeron to do the Capsula release revision 6mths on. I can only tell you my experience and I can say my pain is non existent, well almost as you know. I could not stand the pain and yes I was told I shouldnt be in so much pain, but only you kow how much pain you are in and tolerating. I have no regrets  having the 3rs op. It just seemed I needed another tweek to get me over the final hurdle, although I am not at the finishing line yet. Keep focused on the 1st Feb. Lets face it, it can't get any worse that is what I kept telling myself. If I can help you up to and through your surgery with my experience then I hope it will give you some faith in your decision. Is there a chance you could get a cancellation. Keep Focused. Best Wishes

Thank you so much for your help. Just curious where was your pain and what did it feel like. Mines pinpoint at the front of my shoulder. I'm really happy for you.

My pain was at the front of the soulder too, almost parallel to the clavaicle but slightly below. It was a deep pain radiating down the bicep. I also experienced a lot of stinging as well and it was very sore. The capsular release revision is ok as far as ops go. Paralysed arm is the worse for me but as you know it is short term. I think you have had too much thinking time and have had  time to dwell on your past experience. Can you get the op brought forward. Maybe you just need a tweek too. Try and focus on what it could bring you rather than what you have experienced. I wish I could be there for you but I am certainly here on this forum for you. I understand why you are hesitant but I got to the stage I could not put up with the pain day in day out andnight time as well. What sort of pain are you experiencing? Lets keep you positive up to and through your recovery.smile I will keep in touch to keep you updated and to see how you are doing? Thinking of you. smile

Thank you so much for the encouragement my pre op is January 20th. My pain is like a knife in the front of my shoulder. It never goes away and it radiates to my bicep. It's weird I have no pain in the side or back of my shoulder. It really helps to talk to you. I feel like a shell of my former self. I'm taking lyrica now to rule out any nerve pain. Your right I'm over thinking it. I'm just nervous that the dr said the pain is from the tight joint but when it got released and loosened it didn't go away. I hope your still feeling good I'd love to hear how your doing.

Hope you are ok. So 20th Jan is not long now and the wheels will be in motion for the operation on the 1st Feb.smile My sysmptons were very much like yours, and the pain in the Bicep was dreadful as you know. It seems like your shoulder is stuck at the front like mine was.Scar tissues is probably part of your pain too. Your doc should remove that during your op.  What your doc is saying is so right. Mine got released twice and then tightened up. The 3rd time it just felt different, and I worked on the physio exercises like you would never believe. I am feeling great. I still have days when the arm feels it has been over used almost like a warning sine. I have just soreness now rather than pain and I can actually sleep on it, sometimes a little sore but no pain either. I am still doing physio exercises and lifting 3kg weights. I know it is not much but it is helping. I truly believe you are making the right decision with the op. You cannot continue like you are. Once you have had the op and the stitches removed really push on with the exercises but obviously being sensible. I really cannot tell you how pleased I am to be out of pain,Just sore. I can get my arm behind my back to the top of my shoulder blade. How amazing is that! cheesygrin  Iam praying you have the same experience as myself after your op. I am sure you will. Try doing your exercises asmuch as you can tolerate  before you go in and if you can try and swim even if it is gentle breaststroke. Heat and Ice packs too. I know you are going to get better. If only you could feel how I feel. You would not believe how far I have come, and this will be you in a few months time after the op. Thining of you and counting down your days with you unitl you feel amazign again. Will keep in touch and let me know how the pre op goes.smile

Hi, Wanted to wish you well for you pre op assessment on 20th. Hope you are feeling positive. Just a quick update. I am still feeling good and moving well. Slept on shoulder last night and still a little sore but it did not wake me up, just felt the soreness this morning. ROM is still very good. Using resistant bands now and light weights along with the standard exercises. Just a thought ask if you have scar tissue if you have not asked already as my consultant told me that gives pain alone. I so want you to experience how I feel after your 3rd op. I beleive you have made the right decision for another operation. smileThinking of you loads. If I could take some of your nerves away I would.  Let us know how pre op goes.

Thank you so much. I'm glad to hear you're doing well. I'm very hopeful as this is miserable to be in constant pain let alone not being able to use my arm. Hopefully I can make a full recovery and get my life back. I'll update you Wednesday.

Thanks Jay I'm glad your doing well. I'm hopeful my pain will stop on Monday or at least it will be a different pain. Are u able to lift weights yet? I'm a firefighter and am hoping to get back to full duty.
    • Posted

I am lifting weights but nothing a firefighter would struggle with. I am a secretary so not much weightlifting required for my job. I am doing core exercises and doing pretty much everything else life expects on a daily routine. I still get a little sore and after excessive exercises my shouder lets me know. I have started to experience a popping noise and I am not sure if it is where bone was removed or the space the surgeon created for movement. Will let you know after my next appt. Good Luck!
