Funny tingling all over body

Hi everyone!

For about 6 weeks now, off and on, I've had this weird tingling all over my body.

At times it'll be concentrated in one place (like pins and needles) in both my feet or a hand or a shin. And then other times like tonight, it'll be like little sudden twitches of tingling...almost like a little buzzy, tingling insect. So tonight, buzz on my top lip and then my scalp and then my big toe and then my thumb and then my cheek. I go to scratch myself to make it stop (though it's definitely on the inside....not like a skin condition).

I went to the doctors about 4 weeks ago and he was very dismissive. Said it wouldn't be anything serious as neurological stuff would involve chronic persistent pins/needles in one specific area. I was texted for thyroid and glandular fever (as I mentioned I'd had a really bad cold and sore throat and that's when it seemed to have started). Both tests came back normal.

It's very annoying. I do have sciatica and wonder if that's causing it? The little tingles all over are keeping me awake right now!

Perhaps I should go back to the docs? To be honest, he made me feeling like a raving hypochondriac last time (despite the fact he could see from my records is not been to the doctors in over 10 years, apart from an A&E visit for a broken foot!).

Any ideas?

    Hi Everyone!!

Omg I can totally relate to all your comments.  I have had this tingling for almost a year now. I’ve been tested for everything; MS, Lymes, vitamin deficiency, nerve conduction study and pinched nerves. Everything was normal! But I’ve been taking VitB and D just to see if that would help but, nothing. I’ve now been on an Estrogen Patch for six weeks, nothing. I even tried acupuncture and it seemed to help a little but I still have the tingling.  Oh and I’ve also tried Neurontin (Gabepentin) and that may have help a little. But the tingling has never fully gone away!  They just can’t figure out what it is and it’s starting to drive me crazy! The past few days have been the worst. Here’s how it all started. I’ve been on Paxil for 20 years, all of a sudden it stopped working in March ‘16 and I started having panic attacks again, they switched me from the Paxil to Zoloft but I hated the way the Zoloft made me feel so I went back to Paxil and that’s when I started feeling the tingling, (while tapering off of the Zoloft and going back up on the Paxil). A couple months after doing that I had a Hysterectomy (Aug.) and since that the tingling has stayed with my everyday all day. Tonight I’m going to try decreasing my Paxil, I want to see if it’s that. I have to figure this out!! ??   Any new advice!

Hi christina sorry to hear you’ve been suffering with this for a year now ?? That must be hugely tormenting, especially having no diagnosis. Can I ask exactly what your tingling feels like and if it’s predominant anywhere ? I’m just curious to know if anybody has the same feeling as me. I would describe my sensations as definitely tingling but with a slightly prickly sensation also. They vary all over the body it’s never really concentrated in one area however I would say my legs tingle the most. It’s sort of constant but if I keep myself busy I don’t notice it as much. Worse is night time when I’m lying still. Right now as I’m typing this I’ve felt a tingle in knuckle, knee and hip. So yeah that’s concentrating on them and that basically happens all day in all different places. It’s driving me up the wall 🙈

      Hi Vanessa,

I would describe the tingling like maybe little bugs crawling under my skin, it isn’t concentrated anywhere, it’s everywhere but strongest in my arms. Like you if I keep busy I don’t notice it, it’s as soon as I’m still I notice more. And yes especially at night when I go to sleep. I actually had the hardest time falling asleep last night because it was so bad it actually starts to hurt. I did noticed that when my husband brushes up against my skin it sends the tingling down my whole body even more!!! I really can’t wait to figure this out!!

    Hi.

is the pins and needles constant do you have any other symptoms like weakness in your arms legs etc? I started with pins and needles in my hands and feet doctor thought it was carpul tunnel syndrome. Then after 2nd week of complaining said it was because I wore tight jeans and high heels. The 3rd week after blood tests I could hardly walk struggled to get out of bed that's when I was rushed in to ICU later diagnosed with Guillian Barrie Syndrome . Spent a month in ICU then a further 8 months in rehab learning too walk again ......if your still having these symptoms then I'd go back to your doctors

      Debbie,

I’ve had this since May of last year, so I don’t think it’s Gillian Barre Syndrome.  Pus I don’t have muscle weakness, just aches and pain, but I had that before. Believe I wish someone could tell me what it is! I’m currently tapering off Paxil, hoping that’s what it is!

Trying again as my long post disappeared.

Recovering from shingles and having now having the symptoms you are

briefly what works for me. Lots of water, 20 plus min of fast walking, regular meals watching food choices with no chocolate, spices, acidic fruits, do a shingles-food search, as much sleep, rest as possible. Avoid stressors as much as possible as body in tense fight-flight mode triggers nerves (when get nerves flairing up did my relax work and the calmed down. Work to focus your mind on sound of your slow, comfortably deep breath, on the sounds around you and gently bring it back when it wanders off. There is tons on relaxing mind and body just find one thing that works for you. It takes practice so do not get stressed because it is not a quick fix.

better send this before it disappears again. Good luck to all think "this too shall pass"

    which can help it pass!

It the tingling continues or worsens get your csf tested by lumbar puncture to rule out Guillan Barre Syndrome. Labs will be normal and MRI only way to know is by lumbar puncture. It is a life threatening illness. If left without being checked it can progress to paralysis and respiratory issues. Also you can get a emg on your legs and arms to see if you are having GBS which causes demyelination of the nerves which can cause feeling of tingling pins and needles. If not that it could be small fiber neuropathy which is not life threatening but can cause tingling numbness if feet hands legs arms. If you progress to numbness which us spreading up your legs or arms go to emergency room to be checked. Hopeful you will get better.

I am so thankful to have found this thread. I have learnt quite a lot by reading through all the messages and it has made me feel so much better knowing I am not alone with these symptoms.

I have recently over the past week to 10 days had tingling and pins and needles in my hands and feet. For the last 5 days my right elbow has been aching, although this seems to have now eased. I also, like others have mentioned, get sharp pains that are fleeting but can occur anywhere in the body, those symptoms I have had longer but seem to have subsided recently and been taken over by the pins and needles.

I eventually went to the docs today. Whilst there I explained that I began following a vegan diet 12 months ago and a few months ago was feeling wiped out so had started taking iron supplements, b12 and vit D and this had helped. I asked if deficiencies in these could be causing my pins and needles symptoms. I also queried the menopause or peri menopause as I am 44 years old. He said after prodding my elbow and looking at my hands that it was nothing to worry about but that he would send me for blood tests as he could see I was anxious. This was probably due to me typing my symptoms into Google the previous night and diagnosing myself with all manor of fatal illnesses!

There are some people in this thread who have been suffering with these symptoms for a prolonged period so I guess I will monitor my symptoms, see if the blood tests reveal anything and try not to worry.. which is easier said than done.

Reading all of your messages has given me some comfort so thank you.

Hi Catherine, I also have these symptoms with the tingling and all, they go sort of on and off and little things/changes can make them worse or better, how did your blood tests go? I’m keen to discuss these is further detail in private perhaps, anyone here on social media? I’m going insane and want it fixed, I have been to doctors and all, it’s a long story but I’m not fully cured, I’m scared to go back to doctors as I feel I am just wasting my time and I won’t get anywhere further,

Hi Sam, sorry only just read your message today. It's been a busy week! I had my blood tests last week and will ring for the results today. I'm guessing there's nothing major or I assume they would have contacted me by now. I will let you know. If there is nothing I will push for them to look into it further. I asked the nurse what tests they were doing on the bloods and she said it's a full blood test which means liver, etc etc. I can't remember the full list now. It does test for vitamin levels but not specific vitamins. I think it will be the main ones. I have enquired about patient access because you can access your medical records online so can see for yourself your results rather than the doctors receptionist just saying 'yes they're fine'. When you ring up. That doesn't tell you anything does it. I am going to push the test for menopause. Apparently this is a blood test. My friend who is a similar age has bouts of tingling in hands so it's a possibility. I also get sore joints in hands too but I'm still wondering if that's hormonal rather than anything like arthiritus.

    Good afternoon

I have been having the exact same symptoms. I caught the flu sometime in January and have been having tingling arms and legs on and off ever since. One day it's gone next day it's back. One day it's my entire body one day it's just my legs or my arms. Don't know what's going on. I have read about post viral symptoms and it sounds like that may be it and it could take a few months or more to get rid of so I'm hoping that's what's going on. I do not have a y weakness or fatigue just this annoying tingling and occasionally a muscle twitching or spasming.

      Linda,

I’ve had the same thing for a year, I too have the stabbing pains in ransoms places. And nits not like a muscle pain. I have it on the side of my leg, my forearm. Last night I had a drop of water on my arm and I didn’t wipe it off and I realized it started feeling irritating. I don’t know what this is but my doctor’s tested me for everything. MS, Lymes disease, heart, vitamin difiency, nerve study.
