Hi all,

Im 4.5 stone over weight and im looking into getting a gastric band,

i may sound drastic but i have tried eveything and i cant seem to get anywhere, all i think about is food and weight it takes over my life and i have had enough,

Hello. Found your discussions really interesting. Had my consultation for a gastric band on the 5th Nov. My issue is not about having the surgery it's when to have it. I have a long haul holiday booked for the end of December and do not want to be ill. I have been offered the 16 nov to have the op. I want to go for it but my hubby wants me to wait til we get back in the new year..would really appreciate your comments and any  advice ??

Everyone said the same to me wait till after Xmas but money was burning a whole in my pockets it was a now or ne,ver dession for me plus I just been to dublin and I struggle to fit into all my clothin and was so uncomfortable I know I could of enjoyed the break if I was a lighter person . Plus I go to egypt  end of January and for once in my life I want a picture of my self in a bikin or swimsuit even though I will still be over weigh I know I will be happy

ive family from America over for Christmas.  Im having them all over for Christmas Dinner.  Im just hoping they dont notice im not eating too much and them thinking its because im busy preparing everything.  I was so nervous booking but thought if I think of excuses (my birtheday in January, hubby february) ill will never book.  So its now or never while i have the money.  If your  holiday is the End of December you will have at least 4 weeks before going away I think you should be fine by then, back on solids etc so it shouldnt spoil your holiday and your weight loss journey will have well started,  good luck whatever decision you make x Rebecca and KB175 seem to be doing well and theyre just coming up to 2 weeks since surgery, keep looking at the discussion to see how their journey is going - I know I am! xxx

I know exactly what you mean as my clothes don't fit and I feel horrid don't want to go out so thought if I have the surgery on the 16th Nov I would bit over the op and hopefully lost a little weight. Finding it hard to persuade my hubby and he has such a good argument as in 2010 I had a gastric ballon and was violently ill for 3 months , it should have stayed in for 6 months but I could not tolerate it anymore, hair falling out & I looked like a zombie no energy but the positive was the four n a half stone I lost in the 3 months. Proved not the right option for me as put two n half back on and feel rubbish and annoyed at myself for letting it happen.

Thanks , so helpful reading comments of people that are on the same journey as me and the different stages really helps . KB175 & Rebecca's conversations have me airing on the side of "go for it " - I will be 6 weeks post op when I fly to see my son in Australia and my consultant advised I would have my first fill when back in Uk in January. Good luck on the 20th, xx I will keep you posted . X

Hi, how nice to hear from new people!

Does your surgeon know you are going away for long haul flight? If he/she is happy with it then go for it!

When I first decided about band I thought, I'm not telling anyone! But throughout the process, I've told a few more people than originally planned, especially when it was getting closer to the op and I was so excited!

Aslong as you can time off after your surgery I would say go for it!

If it makes you feel better I had a friend who had the balloon also, and she couldn't tolerate it for the whole 4 months and as soon as it was removed the weight came back and more! I think it's like anything temporary! Which is why I feel the band is definitely for me!

What I kept thinking to myself was, food or thin? Then in picked up the phone made the consultation and left with a surgery date and never looked back!

I'm not by any means a professional but do ask me if you have any questions! I know personally I would of loved to have a post op person to talk to!

      Can't believe it's been 2 weeks today!

      Well done Jenni!

I must admit I did feel the same as you about 'should I leave it until after Christmas' but then I thought, I could forever make excuses and Christmas dinner is only a glorified roast, you can still enjoy the family and presents etc! I absolutely love roasts but I know I would prefer to get rid of this weight than the roast! You can still have a mini one and you could say to family that you have been picking while preparing and you are trying to be good! I think people will be too busy enjoying your yummy food to notice! You never know, by then you may of decided to tell them!

You're all booked now and it's going to come around so quickly! You will be so relieved when it's done and wondered what all the fuss was about!

P.s if it's any help to your argument with hubby! I know everyone is different but I have only been sick once since post op and that's because I had tomato soup and then laid down! It wasn't what I would call proper sick either! I was prepared with sick bowls etc and I know that kb had brought her sick bags! But I didn't need them in the end! Thank goodness!

Hiya. Thanks for your reply. I felt a little like a stalker following you and KB175 but feel relieved I posted. Just called the bariatric nurse to ask if 16th still available, credit card in hand, will deal with my husband later. Have you weighed yourself ? How do you feel now 2 weeks after the op. I have probably done too much research and making the decision harder - the best advice has come from this forum and women who are the experts as they are living it now. Will let you know if I manage to book the 16th , normally I am so decisive not like me to be so "fluffy". X

Don't feel like a stalker! That's what the forums are for, to help one another! It's for anyone to read so don't you worry!

Yes you can overload on information and I did aswell! I also scared myself stupid at some of the things people said I would have to do post op but never had to do!

Feeling absolutely fine today! Probably could of gone back to work after a week but was signed off for 2 as my job is non stop rushing around! My rights I should be a size 10 the amount of running around I do! No such luck!

No pain at this stage, maybe just a bit uncomfortable when I first wake up and get out of bed but nothing worthy of a painkiller.

All I would say is post op I should of moved around a lot more as I was advised as I have a trapped nerve in my back and I think lying around was the cause! So just be careful afterwards, do enough but not too much! I was just lazy or thought I was doing enough! So my back is my only pain really!

Haven't weighed myself since the 24th as I always use the scales at work as they are proper medical ones and using home scales are so different! So I shall weigh myself at work on Monday! Also I don't want to get obsessed! However I know I have lost weight as I can feel it!

16th November? Keep me posted when you book but for feel pressured! You have to be so committed to it that only you will know when the right time for you is xx

I popped into work this afternoon to weigh myself!! I've lost 12 pounds since the 24th October (op date) probably would be more as I always weigh myself first thing in the morning but I'm so happy with that!!
