Gastric Band - Operation Buddies Required!

Posted , 14 users are following.

Hi All

Today I had my consultation for a Gastric Band operation, having struggled with my weight since childhood.

I have around 10 stone to lose, although have been told it's likely the band will only assist me with 6 stone (being 50% of my excess weight)

I am obviously nervous about the op, and have been given a provisional date for mid February for my operation. I wondered if anyone could shed some light on their weight loss journey, and what I should expect.

Secondly, will anyone be having surgery around the same time as me that would like a Band Buddy for support? I'd love someone to share experiences with.

I look forward to hearing from you xx Becky xx

    Hi ladies

Well after a long journey home we got stuck in all the traffic on m5 n m6  arrived home about 2 pm. I have to be honest I'm struggling with the pain and the wind thing, I hate the discomfort and reliance on my hubby! I do think I've got more pain dye to the hernia but than the band so we will see.

I'm still on paracetamol n brufen and gripe water is my best friend!!! I've eaten soup about 2 spoonfuls a juice smoothie about 50 mils n sipped on water . Today I'm going on the lactalose n bran to try n move me as well as veg soup💨💨💨💨

I slept better last night and woke every 3 hours a little walk about n back to bed, does anyone have any tips on how to shift the wind etc.. I'm doing movement windmills n coughing with a pillow but oh boy it still hurts!! My wounds r also sore this morning feel like there burning so I guess that's a good sign when you notice the little pain x x

Currently yes I still regret having it sad hope it will change as I improve

Have a lovely day everyone x

You will probably feel regret until the pain improves which should be better everyday and probaby be much better by the weekend!

Yes the wind is pretty bad, I tried windeze and also antacid tablets. It will loosen up in a couple of days and then you won't stop burping!! You've just got to let it pass really!

Maybe you need stronger painkillers? Are you taking these regularly enough?

I ended up on tramadol as I suffered too, these also helped me sleep!! Xx

      Thanks Rebecca

I can't take codeine or stronger painkillers I'm violently sick n my book drops in my boots  so that's why I'm only on the light stuff lol x

I do feel better today after a good sleep 👧 I do hope my mood lifts over what I've done x x

When the pain and wind go and you start eating more normally you will definitely feel better x

Yes windeze helped me with the wind - i sent my hubby out to find them for me x Its hard work the first couple of days but you will improve each day.  Once you get over that hurdle you will be fine x a glass of milk with an actimel or a yoghurt mixed in will get some goodness into you and help too if you find the soup too much at first.  Remember to take sips of water all day too to stop you from dehydrating xx

i wondered just after too - i think its a process you go through.  Now I dont regret. I would never have started to lose weight without going through with it.  Ive my first fill Saturday which I am getting nervous about but after finding a few You tube videos to watch i think i am beginning to understand how this will work.  I know the main rule is not to over eat.  band slippage is not something i want to go through so I think that is making me more careful about what i eat.  Also the rule of check 30 times wait 30 seconds between mouthfuls as a minimum sees to be the way to do it.  It apparently tells your nerve endings at the top of your tum that you are full quicker and dont want any more!  (gone are the days of clearing your plate before you leave the table).  The main things that we crave we should avoid - bread.  The thought of no more sandwiches does worry me - some people after restriction can still eat it but I am wary of it expanding in my tum - although the thins wraps may be better suited.  thin toast is also an option but again not something i would want every day.  I think we need to work with the band - who will do their job of telling us when we are full and making it more awkward or even impossible to eat certain foods without damaging ourselves.  I so want to gain back my confidence which has eroded over the years and as the kids are now growing up, I want to stop being a wallflower and feeling like an old maid and take charge of my life again.  I think the exercise - especially walking is a great start to help us on our journey and know that a lot of people now find the gym their best friend.  Not sure if I will ever be like that but I will gradually increase exercise and walking the dogs more! It is frightening still to me but I know after paying out all this money I am determined to not waste it and get my life back.  Look ahead and say - The futures Bright I think is going to be my new motto x

tried to attach a video link for you to watch but not sure if its allowed to add a link - but on You tube - search for The Eight Golden rules by lapbandaustralia.  its a set of 4 videos explaining the Gastric band which I found very helpful.  xx

make sure you are taking your pain killers - and windeze and windmilling your arms as you walk about (dont knock any ornaments off)  the band around your tummy makes it swollen hence liquids for 2 weeks to recoup - make sure no little bits in your soup.  keep sipping the water - and try some peppermint tea as it could also be the gas trying to escape xxx bear with it it will get better x

      Hi

Aw thanks for asking smile to be honest I slept really well waking only a few times due to the discomfort and that's what I will call it now discomfort, I woke and felt great other than the pains in my chest it feels tight like chronic indigestion and nothing is shifting that. I can move more without sharp pains from the operation I am 💨💨from both ends which is great and I have managed to go to the toilet so all seems to be improving😵

I have had a yoghurt drink for breakfast and a glass of water I was fine with that too so again all good👏

I am now just sat on couch feeling a bit sickly so I've phoned gp for some meds for that and some better anti acid meds 😷

Big positive is I've lost 10 lb since last Friday!!!! 😆😋😅👙👙👙

So fingers crossed day 3 post op is the start of real recovery and progress x x
