Gastritis diagnosed but PPI's not working

Just wondered if anyone else who's been diagnosed with mild gastritis is having problems with PPI's not helping? Had upper endoscopy 2 weeks ago and been taking PPI's since then, but if anything feels like its getting worse!

Symptoms originally started 5 months ago and now the dull, burning ache is just constant and also along with constant back ache it's really getting me down. Only relief I get is going to bed and lying down. Does anyone else have this? I'm worried its something more sinister.

I was diagnosed with gastritis over a year ago. They gave me pantoprazole, which sometimes helps, but I will have spells(having one now for about 10 days or so) where nothing helps. Constant upset stomach. Wish I could be of help. My Gastro Dr. told me I would probably have stomach issues the rest of my life. Oh Joy. Anyway, I dont know if this helps or not but you are not alone. Jim

It comes and goes with me. I usually just go on kind of a soft food diet. No spicy food, no fried food. Having one of my longer lasting spells now.

ppi never helped me. They actually made me sick. I dealt with gastritis for a year. Thankfully, i can now eat some foods that i couldn't when i had gastritis.

Yes, I had the same thing happen to me. Started a few years ago. I have a history of diverticulitis so thought that may have something to do with it., but no turns out it's just gastritis. Going through a spell right now that is in it's third week. When you have constant upset stomach it can really get you down. PPIs dont seem to work for me either. The only hope I can give you is that it should pass and you'll feel normal again, but with me it always seems to return. Maybe it's stress , but other than that they don't know. Had the upper GI and they found nothing unusual. Hoping you feel better. Jim

I am 82 and was diagnosed 60 years ago after almost a year on antibiotics. My Dr. then put me on Malox and milk. (They no longer recommend milk) I alternated the two every two hours for two days and slowly introduces mild foods and it worked. Since then most medical people don't know how to treat it. Been on PPIs and Carafate neither of which worked but in fact made the pain worse. I have flare ups from antibiotics or even taking a lot of vitamins. Had all kinds of tests. Now taking Mylanta between meals because of flare up from meds. Need to avoid foods that trigger it. I am finding that I need an enzyme when I drink milk. Can't drink coffee or eat tomato based sauces. When I mention gastritis to Dr.s they seem to ignore it and want to call it an ulcer. I have dealt with this for years.

I was recently diagnosed with erosive gastritis with H Pylori positive . I was prescribed Sompraz for treating H Pylori and Veloz D after my antibiotic treatment. I do not have any burning in the stomach like i had before being treated for H pylori but i have constant acid reflux and the antacid seems to be doing nothing. My Gastro recommonded a 20 day treatment of PPI which i am skeptical to take coz of all the negativity around it and also its possible link with gastro cancer . I am eating bland food , no sugar, no caffeine and everything to sooth my stomach. I have horrible acid reflux.

    Does anyone has similar symptoms?

I battle with gastritis from time to time. First episode was back in the late 80s and I've been able to manage it on my own. At that time my dr had prescribed Zantac as it was not OTC then. Fixed me right up with a little change in diet. And Zantac has been my go to med for flare ups. But now it's been recalled and I'm having issues for a couple of weeks now and am taking Tagamet. It seems to help some but it doesn't seem to last long. I'm taking it 3 times a day but in between, I can have stomach aches and a little nausea. I know Zantac works best with my body and stomach but I don't want to chance taking it even though I have some. Maybe try Tagamet HB. It is used more for healing ulcers than just reducing or blocking stomach acid. I would probably be better if I'd watch what I'm eating and not let my stomach get empty. That is the worst thing for me - letting my stomach be empty and the stomach acid just irritates the lining more. I just ate lunch and feel yucky so came to search online and found this forum. Sorry so many of us are here 😦

I find that eating even a little more often helps but also found a med that I was prescribed was aggravating it. I drink peppermint tea, bone broth and soup. Starting to wonder if I am reacting to gluten. Several friends have solved stomach problems by eliminating gluten. That is so hard for me but I am finding some alternatives. I also take an enzyme for lactose when I drink milk. I think we have to be our own detectives because it is no fun hurting all the time and doctors don't seem to take this seriously.

If the PPIs are disagreeing with you, ask for a different PPI or a lower dose. Or it may be better to stop them and try milk which is also a good natural antacid.

Very interesting read, i don't know if i am happy or no about reading this all, i am glad its not only me. A year ago its all started with acid reflux and loss of appetite, used to take one or two anti acids and used to go away then it become problematic and ask GP for test as i was losing weight too. all the test done including lower GI ultrasound, and chest x-ray, at the end i have been given nothing but some h2 blockers and send home as it wasn't a cancer. they said its excessive stomach acid. Used H2 blockers also they give me PPI called omeprazole. After a year this time i flared up proper and went to my gp again. I was sure i have H-pylori but stool test come back negative ( i wasnt on ppi before the test) GP gave me PPI again for 2 months only she said. My blood test results come back today ( no action needed) i was expecting folic acid or B12 deficiency as i feel tired all the time.

She added i think its gastritis but we have to look inside your stomach. Perhaps if the ppi doesn't work or not we should see whats happening inside.

    symptoms are

    burping

    bloating

    acid reflux

    nausea

    loss of appetite

since using PPI omeprazole 20mg feels like acid reflux gone away, side effects of he pill is crazy! head aches and mild nausea, burping and farting crazy.

I am on diet so i don't eat out and i watch out what i eat and stopped beloved coffee, and i am on 100 billion probiotics too. The PPI seem to get me just fine for a day and next day or two perhaps a week but then i flare up again, either stressful day or a little black tea ( 5 cups a day i shouldn't pass 3 a day)

Strangely everyone seem to be prescribed PPI but not been advice how important the diet really is too. Sitting here writing couldn't eat anything today as gastritis flared up now going to change my PPI to omeprazole 20mg to Lansoprazole 30mg apparently it is better and less side effects. If this one not works as well, i am ditching the PPI's going for natural remedies.

the worst thing is when all the tests comes clear and you still have symptoms when you really try to take your pills and eat healthy 😄 Brain got a lot to do with it, Stress ,anxiety is the trigger for gastritis i assume you cant just get rid of them that easy so making the stomach feel better is not that easy.

Hi, I get most of the symptoms you describe plus really sour taste in mouth. I often wake up in the night feeling as if I am about to be sick.

I am determined to give up the PPI's again as I am sure they are not good for the stomach and don't seem to work for me anymore.

Now Ranitidine doesn't seem to be an option either because of all the product recalls, so is there anything that works that is safe and won't harm?

Went to a natural doctor this week and one of the things he suggested was the juice of a lemon every day. Didn't know what to think, only had a small lime in the house so I made limeaid with stevia and I can't believe it but my nausea and heartburn are gone. Can spread it over the day and not drink it at once. Don't think I would use the juice of a whole large lemon every day, maybe half, but it has been three days and my stomach is better. I had been taking probiotics and he said if the stomach is hostile they won't work. Proton pump inhibitors make it worse. May not work for everyone but it is working for me. Have not been pain free for months. GI Dr. wanted to do more tests...I am 82.

They keep saying I must have an ulcer but tests show that I don't. Fresh lemonade every day worked for me. Be careful and dilute it to see if it works. Lemon juice become alkaline in the stomach.

If stomach is hostile to probiotics they won't survive.

when and how many over the counter antacids to you take during the day/night ? Do you take them regularly or only when you have flare ups?
