Groin pain

Posted , 12 users are following.

Hi everyone I'd written on this group at 10 days post op and felt good but didn't know how I'd progressed ... I'm now 4 weeks post op and have a question . About a week ago I started having pain in my groin - both sides and this is really stopping me progress. I have seen a few threads commenting on groin pain and wondered what people's thoughts were and if it goes. It's quite painful and worse on my left side (had right hip done) makes me feel disappointed like I'm going backwards instead of forward !!!

would be grateful for any replies or anyone who's also experienced this!

Hi angel, I had a half hip replacement done in 10th March 2017. I have pain in my groin still but it is not as bad as it was at tge beginning. It has eased off a good bit.

I was at hospital for my 6 weekly checkup and doctor was happy. I mentioned the groin and he said this was normal. I walk every day and find my leg is getting stronger and i can go up and down stairs without a problem. Also i can walk around the house with no crutches for a little while although i am still not string enough to go without them permanently.

What i find annoying is a pain at the bottom of my operated leg in my shin and at the side. I am putting this down to just muscles but if it not improving next week i shall have to go back to my doctor

I also nitice that when lying down i cannot straighten my leg and luft it up but i think that just takes time

Give yourself another couple of weeks .to see if groin pain goes.

    Kind regards

    Liz

Thank you Liz for your reply, it is just frustrating isn't it, the first 3 wks I was fine and thought this is going to be easy, but with groin pain makes it harder to walk rolleyes and like you said there's so many other little unexplained aches and pains - my knees hurt especially when I go to bed, I put cool gel pads on them which helps smile but I guess it's a big operation and with it there's bound to be side effects. I hope you continue to progress you,re 20 days ahead of me and maybe we,ll speak again soon

      all the best angela x

      Hi Angela,

Yes we are not aware that it is such a big op. Those horrible white stockings for 6 weeks and i had to give myself injections on my tummy every day but i suppose better than having blood clots.

If there is anything you need to know we can compare notes.

I am giving myself another 6 weeks before i even think about going back to work.

I actually drove my car one day last week but i paid the price - my leg was really sore - it was too soon but I think it trial and error. We just have to learn to know our bodies

I am also very tired. I didnt sleep muvh the first few weeks. I found lying on my back particularly difficult abd i had horrible night sweats also.

      Regards

      Liz

      Hi Liz

i think I was lucky with the stockings, I was never asked to wear them! But like you I was given injections, which isn't very pleasant... was meant to have done it for 28 days but stopped after 19 days .. I was getting numb legs every night and thought they were the cause but tbh when they stopped I still got numb legs!

well done for attempting to drive I keep on saying I'm going to try but worried in case I have to do an emergency stop smile it's so hard laying in the same position in bed isn't it normally you can turn about and change position... I guess things will improve and we,ll forget these horrible first few weeks!

      regards

    dear angel,

oh, those groin pains !!!   I am still dealing with them -

I read in your previous post that you had the super path approach to THR - so no bone, muscles etc. were cut but pretty heavy manipulated -

I think it would be better to ask your surgeon - when is your follow up appointment?  usually around 6 weeks post-op, however if you are in a lot of pain or very worried, try to get an earlier one ...

does your other hip need surgery as well?

It could be your muscles making over time to keep you in balance - perhaps some stretching exercises ?

let us know how you are getting on, okay ?  I would love to know more about the super path approach ...

    big warm hug

hi Renee - I see you write a lot on here and help a lot of people with advice which is so good of you... the superpath op is amazing, and home in 1 day and only a small scar in a hidden place which is good! I'm doing the opposite of exercising thinking it'll make the pain worse and I'm resting more, hard to know what's best isn't it? Yes I do need other hip doing rolleyes was going to have it done 3 months after but that's definitely not going to happen... the groin pain definitely puts a mar on progressing but guess it will all sort itself out in the end! Thanks Renee for your caring approach smile

    Hi

Yes the groin pain can be unbearable, I'm now 11 weeks post op, I experienced groin pain at around the 6 week mark on my operated side,it comes and goes, over the last week my other side has started, not really sure if it's because the other hip has oestoarthritis or if it's overworked to support the operated leg? I might do a little research into this I'm seeing the gp next week, I'll also ask the physio, Ill post on here if I find out.

Keep taking regular pain medications, dont let the pain come to you first, I hope your pain improves and your recovery goes well otherwise.

    Regards

Hi Nicky I see you're quite a few weeks ahead of me, it's nice to get advice  makes you feel you're not on your own! That's what I was thinking that I was maybe overusing my other side... , I'd be interested to know if you hear anything! Yes, I've started again with meds like you say not worth being in pain. I wish you luck too Nicky and hope all is going well with you

    Hi Angel,

Groin pain is very common after having a FHR.  My specialist told me that it takes up to 12 weeks for the tissue around the hip to fully heal, so some tenderness is normal.  Also, physical therapy (physio) is an absolute must for a complete recovery.  I started regular physio by the end of the first week.  I went 3 times per week, plus I did all the strengthening exercises on days that I didn't go.  I did this until week 10 when I felt strong and back to normal again.

Then I got lazy and fell into my old ways of not exercising.  Within 2 months my muscles became weak again and I suffered with groin pain.  I realized that I needed to start exercising again each day.  It doesn't take much, maybe just 15-20 minutes of strengthening each day.  Within just a week or so the pain disappeared.  I saw my specialist 8 months later for a checkup.  He told me that is is crucial that I continue the strengthening exercises, especially as I have a desk job and find myself sitting for most of the day.

The groin pain comes from weakened muscles around the hip.  Make sure that you use ice packs several times a day for the next several weeks to help relieve pain and swelling.  Don't overdo things right now.  You are only 4 weeks post op and your muscles and tissue is still trying to heal.  Rest with your leg elevated as much as possible.  You can't rush the healing process, as much as we all want to.  In doing so, you will only delay full recovery.

Wishing you well as you continue to recoversmile

Thank you Kimberley - I think maybe you are right. I had my op privately and therefore have had no physio rolleyes because of the pain I've rested even more - bit disheartening because I've no idea what to do for exercises !

      Angel,

You can find exercises on the Internet.  'YouTube' is great for having videos to show you how to do the strengthening exercises.  Just go to YouTube and type in 'Exercises after total hip replacement'.

Hope this helps, and best of luck!
