Haemorroidectomy and Anal Skin Tag Removal Recovery

Posted , 38 users are following.

Hi,

I’m now Day 5 post Hemorroidectomy and Anal Skin Tag removal. I’ve read a lot of threads on here from others who went through it and have found some useful and reassuring information. They’re all a few months (or years!) old now and I wondered if there was anyone out there going through it now or more recently that would be willing to share their experience?

I think I’ve been quite lucky in that my issue was mainly a large Skin Tag from post birth haemorroids but I did have a couple of internal haemorroids that were done at the same time.

It would be nice to know that some time soon, I’ll be able to poo without feeling like a freight train is splitting me open!

Thanks,

Lolly x

Hi can I please just ask.... Does anyone know?? All these stories about everyone's painful recovery from hemmoriodectomy, lasting 2 plus weeks of severe pain (if you are lucky)... Is it the same pain for removal of internal and external hems. Or is one type more painful? I really need to know.

Hi Lis, I had 3 internal removed, one of which was quite big as far as I understood, and I'm now post-op 9 days. First 1-2 days I had hardly any pain, was surprised by it actually, even with BM, but then the pain came, would say day 4-6 was pretty awful but all in all I haven't had so much pain, mostly during and after BM with painkillers and laying down for 3-4 hours, after that I've been able to move around at home, doing stuff etc. Today I've been pretty much painless expect for BM, today and yesterday I've been on a ½ mile walk. So I guess it's very individual.

Also, would like to ask you all, did any of you experience a bad/pretty foul smell from your bum? I guess it is the leakage? But it smells quite bad and strong, really noticeable if I don't wash for 3-4 hours. Been washing my bum 4-5 times a day, changing pads often and underwear 2 times a day and it still stinks pretty bad. Post op. 9 days.

Thanks for that Henrik. I'm so confused cos my surgeon said he'd remove a couple of skin tags and I didn't ask a single question. I've no idea what he meant.

He also said he would band 3 internal hems, but since then I have been A and E and GP etc with one of them thrombosed. Very painful.

I'm worried he will now say it needs removing.

By the way your recovery time does sound shorter than most on here.

      Thanks for telling me.

Has anyone had both internal and external removed and can compare?

It seems so and I hope so, but it's not over yet, lol. My main problem at this moment is mostly the general discomfort caused by the swelling and leakage. I think my swelling is going to leave me with skin tags, and I'm really hoping that it is just swelled up tissue and not anything else 😣

You are so right about the smell. it isn't nice! I am day 6 post op. I am having a sitz bath every 3-4 hrs. So glad it isn't just me. x

How is it going del? I'm now 12 days post-op and doing pretty well, no BM today yet so ain't gonna cheer yet but swelling has gone down as the leakage, but the smell is there still lol, hopefully it will pass. I've also had quite alot of itching the last 2 days no matter how often I wash etc.

      Hi Henrik.

I'm day 8 now. Glad you are doing ok. I'm definitely doing better but BM all ok until after it when the spasms and hot poker up the bum feeling kick in. Ouch. I have a hot bath.

Smell has gone and no leakage now...not an attractive operation is it?? haha.

I also had the itching! Hopefully means we are healing. Just feels like a BM puts you back.

I don't regret having it done though, for anyone who hasn't had it done yet, it will be worth it. Painkillers really do help and take edge off. Not worst pain ever.

I'm making sure I drink lots of water and I take syrup of figs and take a stroll softener.

Hope you are through this asap xx

Hello am @day 5 post op and it is one of the worst experiences in my life. I wanted to ask about when BM happen only little amount of waste(poo) comes out like 2 to 3 small drops of poo not forgetting the paiiiiiin. Is this okay or is something wrong?

    • Posted

Thanks, and speedy recovery to you too. Seems we have a quite similar healing process so guess it is getting better. As you said, BM today set me back but the pain after didn't last as long as it did just 2 days ago so yay for that! Been on a 1.5 mile walk today without any problems. Seems like the outside swelling is the one that takes the longest to get rid of, I'm so fn anxious that it will be something permanent 😖

Hi, well I would assume it depends on how your food intake has been? If you are on some sort of laxative or stool softener and it doesn't help I would suggest that you contact your doctor for further advise. I've read that this operation can cause problems with passing stool.

    • Posted

Hi. No I don't think that's right. are you drinking enough water? I am drinking tons, taking a stool softener, eating fruit and taking syrup of figs. just to make it easy to get out without straining. If you are doing this already, like Henrik said, phone your GP. Hope you are ok xx

I don't have the swelling. Just feel bruised everywhere!! Improving though. I got out for a walk too, we will soon get there. Itching is doing my head in tonight. Sore today after BM too. 🙄

Henrik I'm on day 3 and same, main prob is swelling post bm, which looks like a huge collection of skin tags.

How long did it take to go down?

I also have the smell but at least am at home and can shower, bath or sitz when I like.

I just wanted to post to everyone to say I had horrendous itching around day 7 or 8. I took an antihistamine...magic!! worked a treat.

I'm now day 12 and feel have turned a corner. No painkillers now. light at the end of the tunnel! it does get better xx

Hi Lis, It is still there, guess it is going to take time, but slightly better now 15 days post op. It swells up , guess both inside and outside, everytime after BM. We'll just have to wait and see, my surgeon told me to wait at least 4-6weeks before I contact them if I have any major issues left so yeah, at least 2 weeks left. But I think this will take several months to be honest, feels like that, at least my leakage is down to a minimum now and so is the smell, nothing noticeable today. Other than that I'm doing well, basically back to normal everyday living, going back to work next week but obviously the discomfort is there all the time.

Couldn't edit my previous post but yeah, had BM shortly after, felt good during and shortly after, the best I've felt since surgery actually but then the good old pain came again about 20min after and is still going on and one of my "lumps" as usual is aching. So I think this is going to be a long one to deal with...well, at least that's positive that I feel better during pooping, lol.

Starting to get on my nerves this one, on the other hand, life is pretty easy right know when my only goal and concern is to poop pain free, everything else is secondary... 😂

That's the only thing I can think of right now. Pooping pain free again. And am only 9 days post op. I took a Laxative ( citrafleet 2 bags in one go with a little water bubble) where a huge help thank God.

      Hope everyone gets better.

So true, I've been using Movicol/Makrogol and it works good, it keeps your BM normal but soft, at least for me. I must say, even if I had some sort of a setback on Wednesday, I had BM this morning 1 hour ago and still no noticeable pain, just feel that the swelling has gone up a bit but in general this was by far the best poop during and after I've had since surgery, lol. Also this morning it looked like the outside lumps had decreased in size a bit so hopefully next week will be even better. Next week is my 4th since the surgery.

      Hi

How far are you along now and how are you? I'm 3 weeks today and BM still painful and for hours afterwards, sore and spasms relieved only by a warm bath. Bleeding slightly sometimes. The days I don't go are pretty good. Feels never ending. I'm off work due to the current crisis which I'm almost glad about as work would be a nightmare on these days. x

Hi Del, Monday will mark 4 weeks for me. Totally agree that it is starting to feel like a marathon, mentally exhausting, never ending. I would say the pain is almost gone except during BM with the usual feeling of swelling after. Also have fresh blood in my stool and some fluid leakage after for a couple of hours. Like you, days without BM is good to the degree that I can do normal stuff without thinking about it all the time. The lumps are still there although slightly smaller...I think. But, for some reason, I've had to push and strain somewhat during BM yesterday and today and it is starting to feel 😖, can't figure out why, stool if soft and diet is basically the same since my OP. Gonna increase the stool softeners to see if it helps, starting to panic over this as I most def. dont want any setbacks now. Guess the body adapts to stool softeners like everything else lol.

oh that is weird you said that as I've had same today and blood, except afterwards I was sobbing as so much pain today, more than I've had! I've had 2 hot baths as didn't know what to do. I'm going to try the day ward to see if I can get advice but doubt it at the moment! eek.

    • Posted

Huh, did you get any advice?

Also have had some blood in my poo this week, no dripping or nothing like that but I've had more blood in my poo the last 3 BM's than what I've had since the OP but cant say that the pain is my main issue anymore, more like general discomfort and feeling of tightness/swelling. This is such a weird surgery to recover from, it's like it is impossible to tell if you are doing better or not. My plan is to await the next week or two, since my surgeon told me 4-6 weeks, but then I will demand a follow up if things don't improve significantly. As I've said before I'm starting to be really "worried" about the lumps I have on the outside, something is telling me that those aren't just normal swelling, with my luck as usual I'm starting to think that they maybe are the hemorrhoids that where left and that they have flared up due to the "trauma" from the surgery...

Hello i went and got myself movicol and it did wonders. It helped so much thank god.

I pooped twice with movicol with no strainging at all. It is so helpful i got constipated after the surgery and couldn't poo very good because of the pain andthe doctir didn't even give me something to help with poo other than fiberall which increased my constipation. But still the swelling and discomfort after each BM is just stupied and am 2.4 weeks post op. Dreaming of the day i poo pain free happily.

      Hi.

The Dr text to say sorry to hear you are in pain, please have a prescription for laxatives and painkillers! Didn't say if it's normal or not!! Awaiting a call from my consultant. I'm not having trouble going to the loo, just the horrific pain afterwards. Yesterday was the worst, today I'm okay again.

Hope you are ok. I'll keep you updated with what the hospital says. xx

NP, always nice to help others, this forum is gold in my opinion, has helped me a lot before and after surgery. I'm turning 30 this year. Been physically active my whole life, eating healthy, don't drink, don't smoke, don't sit much and this is how my body shows appreciation lol. 😁

Del77; Well, no BM today so no major issues, I've also noticed that the leakage has almost stopped on days without BM, so that's a positive. Thanks!

aww, it is good not to feel alone and to find out if it is the same for others.

I am 42, fit and healthy. I have IBS which caused constipation, which caused this.

Still dreading BM's. I'm sore this morning, with throbbing and heavy feeling after it, but not as bad as 2 days ago. I'm taking movicol.

I've got loads i want to do in the house whilst we are stuck in, but just can't with this feeling. I'm normally a doer aswell.

Thank goodness i don't have to work at the moment, that would be so hard.

Hope you are all ok. xxx

Same same. Am. Also am 27 and fit but hemorrhoids i think just don't care about that. I've been using movicol for 3 days now thanks to you mentioning it guys and i just can't think of how i used to go to the loo without it. Thank god it helped me loads. Do you use a fiber supplement with movicol?

    • Posted

Personally I don't, Movicol is enough, also, fiber supplement/much fiber will bulk up your poo, which in my mind should be something to avoid, wanna keep things as small as they can lol. I think Movicol by it self also bulks up your poo to keep your BM active. I'm just eating a normal fibrous diet and "soft" foods in general. Also eating quite alot spinach soup, digests really well and almost works like a lubricant basically, at least it feels like that.
