Has anyone experienced night sweats with Sertraline?

I have been taking Sertraline for about 18 months now and I think it has helped me a lot. However, one thing I am now plagued with, which seems to have coinsided with when I started to take it, is night sweats.

I know that hot flushes are listed as a sdie effect, but this is FAR worse than this. I would say about 4-5 nights a week I wake up and I'm sweating so much it's like I've just got out of shower. It's totally gross!!!

My bedroom is not too warm and I don't feel too hot when I gp to bed. The Dr has done blood tests to see if anything abnormal shows up, but that's all OK.

I would be really interested to know if anyone else suffers with this. I don't want to come off it or change if it's nothing to do with the Sertraline, but it's become a real problem in my life!!!

Here's hoping neutral

Yes! These night sweats are horrible I’m just waking up drenched having to change my clothes and go to the other side of the bed… It was only subtle in the beginning as I started on 25 mg I’m now up to 75… I’ve only been on one other medication for treatment years ago and did not have this problem… I’ve been very happy with it overall except for this.

I’m also in a new relationship and I’m not wanting to wake up soaking wet.. lol.. Is there something I can take that is natural to counteract this response?

I have a theory. I have been searching forum after forum and consistently find about 98% (estimate) of the people are female who complain night sweats while taking antidepressants. I am having a hard time finding a significant number of men with this problem (or of women who then stop taking the medication and never have night sweats again).

I started tracking my night sweats and found they occur like clockwork for 5-7 days leading up to the start of my period. Once my period starts, the night sweats go away completely until 5-7 days before my next period starts (even my period is irregular). This tells me there might be  a hormone problem being missed in most cases such as very early menopause or low progesterone. Has anyone else tracked their night sweats like this or stopped taking their Rx to see if the night sweats stop? Just because the night sweats occur some time after starting an Rx does not mean that hormones did not shift coincidentally in these cases.

How exactly do antidepressants cause night sweats?

I have been researching into the same idea. A friend of mine discovered she was peri menopausal after a long and distressing experience. She shared information with me which leads me to believe i might be. I'm 39.

I am going to start tracking the night sweats on your suggestion to build up a picture. I came across your post as this morning i was surprised to realise that last night i did not sweat. ( my period had started yesterday).

Yes I have exactly the same as you, I've been taking them for about a year. Sometimes I wake up drenched in sweat but still feeling cold .

I'm so glad I have seen this thread! I suffer from health anxiety, and have been on Sertraline 50mg for about 2 years. Quite recently, I have a bad stint of anxiety and my Dr increased my dose to 100mg. I only took 100mg for about 10 days as they made me feel really spaced out, and have gone back to 50mg, but since then I have been waking up soaking every single night, even since being back on the 50mg! I have tried different duvet's, sleeping on different surfaces and nothing makes a difference! Could this be the sertraline? Even though I have been taking it for 2 years and not had this symptom before?

With the health anxiety, my mind worries and I have thoughts that it ould be something a lot more serious 😦

Oh yes, I get the sweats alright, accompanied by vivid dreams. The med itself has worked well though at what is quite a challenging time, so I guess I'll just go with the flow (pardon the pun) 😂

I dont just sweat at night I sweat all day to the point I dont want to go out anywhere coz I'm so embarrassed. I dont want to come off the sertraline as they do help but not sure how long I can go on like this. is so bad that I hardly eat i drink loads coz I'm so hot all the time. does it ever get better?

I have been taking this drug for 20 years, and YES it causes sweating. I cannot enjoy being out in the sun EVER! If there's no A/C in the car during the summer, it feels like I'm gonna melt. At night is the worst. I have to sleep with a fan on me full blast or I won't sleep a full night....even through the winter. I hate it so much!!

Yes !! , i got hot flashes really bad at night . It seemed that my dosage was to low so she raised it to 100 mg and within a month my hot flashes got worse and i was dizzy and off balance a lot and got a really bad chapped skin rash on my face . so i quit it all completely. Night sweats gone no off balance anymore rash is gone. I need to find a replacement but i don't want to go threw

    all the side affects.

I hope you can find something for you that works !!

i dunno if anybody still reads this or not but i just wanted to share my experience iam 32 was on 50MG of Sertraline for almost a year got severe night sweats Dr said it was rare it was the Sertraline. i knew it was since i'm pretty in tune with my body. i demanded to be tapered off since the dr didnt think this was the cause and argued about me getting off it and sure enough 2 days after my final dose the night sweats were gone and haven't returned now for almost a month. Drs aren't always correct! but do be careful when tapering off! Withdrawls can be a nightmare i am still getting nauseous but hope this subsides soon i tapered way too fast in order to get rid of the sweats!

Been on this medication (100 mg) for about two years. Two main side effects:

    1. Vivid dreams
    2. bad night sweats

The vivid dreaming eventually subsides, may turn a bit weird, but nothing to get upset about.

The night sweats were really bothersome. For me personally (and I have no medical background), I discovered that if I work up a sweat during the day (for example, manual labor in the yard), the night sweating eases or doesn't happen.

The big surprise is that one night, and for several nights after that, I had no night sweats. Then they came back...off and on like this for a couple of months. Spring came, and since I have allergies, I began taking an antihistamine to stop the runny nose. I'm allergic to a lot of things.

Only by trial and error did I discover that it was the antihistamine that was stopping my night sweats. I take the 24-hour generic one from Costco. It contains 10 mg cetirizine hydrochloride/HCI, and is sold over-the-counter under several brand names.

I take sertraline in the morning and antihistamine in the early evening. When I'm on both (which is all the time now), I either don't sweat at night, or I have very minor sweating which isn't bothersome at all.

I am having them to. I dont think mine started straight away, they seemed to have started a months later, which i found strange. Anyway its really getting me down so i think i better go to see my GP. I suffer with health anxiety so even the thoughts of going to my GP freaks me out.

I have the same issue, and there seems to be no pattern to it - some nights are totally dry, some nights are sauna-like sweat - even the pillow is wet from the back of my head - so that has to go on the radiator in the day to dry out. It's a price I'm willing to pay for now as the benefits have been amazing, less anxiety, less manic moments, far far less worry, much more happy. And some amazing dreams with really high detail.

I've been trying moving the time I take sertraline, I have 50ml in the morning, at lunch, and again in the evening. I've observed if I have the night one as I'm going to bed, the sweats are less. Anyone else had success taking it at night instead of the morning?
